*sigh* ZoneAlarm is one of the weaker firewalls on the internet. And a firewall IS NOT going to stop a virus, just as a condom isn't
going to prevent HIV (For those of you who are going to object to my use of a sexual situation, STFU and tell me if you can do better. [View Quote] builderzMay 15, 2001, 11:55pm
If you consider ZoneAlarm/ZoneAlarm Pro to be a "weak" firewall, what
other firewall product(s) do you recommend, Wing? Builderz Stuff-X - Bot & World Hosting Services http://www.stuffx.com/aw/ [View Quote] chucks partyMay 16, 2001, 1:10am
Very true wing, take it from someone who knows. Sometimes being safe is
never safe enough. But we love coming on the net, so this is a chance you take. The similarities are somewhat parallel. :) [View Quote] andrasMay 16, 2001, 11:09am

As Builderz asked: What is a "good" firewall if ZAP is not good in your opinion?

Well... I know that at least & that is why i follow my religion on
updating my Nortion's Virus Data files every 2 weeks... AND scanning my entire system at least 2x per week... That way if i got a virus that the earlier data files didn't cover... Avter i get the new ones... It might kill it off. BUT i too use a FIREWALL... but firewalls stop the hacker in their tracks. It might not stop the PRO hacker... But the little script kiddies looking for some cheap thrills... It's like having a 24/7 guard dog ready to take a very big bite out of some hackers butt. chucks party <Chucks_Party at hotmail.com> wrote in <3b01efa4 at server1.Activeworlds.com>: >Very true wing, take it from someone who knows. heard of this...but firewalls don't catch viruses, they catch trojans and
that kinda stuff... you can download free upgrades for most virus scanners tough, and there are free ones too (no, I'm not speaking of trial versions) KAH [View Quote] wingMay 16, 2001, 5:04pm
The best firewall, regardless of application is not being stupid. The only reason I classify ZoneAlarm as weak is because online,
there are COUNTLESS tutorials that allow you to take advantage of it's bug's glitches, features and even the fact that it's a software title period. Since I didn't believe them at first, I actually grabbed a copy of Zone Alarm, installed it on a networked machine and proceeded to break into my own system. [View Quote] builderzMay 16, 2001, 6:16pm

[View Quote] I also agree that one of the best things you can do to increase your system's security is to educate yourself on security and related topics. > The only reason I classify ZoneAlarm as weak is because online, > there are COUNTLESS tutorials that allow you to take advantage of it's bug's glitches, features and even the fact that it's a > software title period. I've also seen a few vulnerabilities and trojan horse programs that claim they can defeat ZoneAlarm/ZoneAlarm Pro. But in the most recent version that ZoneLabs has just recently released appears to fix most of these threats, such as the Mutex vulnerability. I haven't found many bugs and/or glitches in ZA nor ZAP. Care to either post or e-mail me a few you found? ZoneAlarm and ZoneAlarm Pro are software firewalls, but ZoneAlarm is also free and in my opinion is better than some commercial firewall products. The firewall in Windows XP is also software based. Yet can a hardware firewall prevent information from leaving your machine the way ZoneAlarm does? One piece of software isn't going to protect you 100% on the Internet. It seems that layered security is the "in" thing to do now in the IT field. If you really do think ZoneAlarm is weak, take a look at http://grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htm. > Since I didn't believe them at first, I actually grabbed a copy of Zone Alarm, installed it on a networked > machine and proceeded to break into my own system. The only vulnerability I found with ZoneAlarm Pro had to do with a Mutex issue. As far as I know, it has been fixed in the most recent version. I'd be interested to know if you can get by the MOST RECENT version ZA or ZAP. I believe the most current version of ZAP is 2.6.88 (as of this writing).
