simple solution: don't install things. You don't use a server you host other
people's stuff on for day to day things like games, do you? Also, he said "no hours down". Surely you can reboot in under an hour, cant you? :-) Rolu builderzDec 31, 2000, 12:39pm
Lanezeri is partly correct. True, you usually DO need to reboot if you
install something that does massive changes to the registry in a Windows OS, but what if the server computer isn't running a Windows OS? You need to worry about power outages. Does your server computer(s) have a dedicated UPS? What about OS upgrades/updates and security patches? Don't forget that hardware can also "fizzle out" over time. Its not likely, but it does happen. Also, don't forget hackers. I hope your server(s) have at the very least a good, solid software based firewall and anti-virus program running 24/7 along with the other worlds you host. And here's the kicker...don't forget to UPDATE your firewall firmware (if you have a hardware based firewall), check for firewall updates (if you use a software based firewall), and update your anti-virus definitions regularly. An anti-virus product won't do any good using virus definitions from two years ago. People think that the hardest part is getting the bandwidth and you just plug in a box, install some worlds, and there you go. Its rarely that easy. However, I commend both God Zedle and Joeman that you are utilizing your resources and helping others in the Active Worlds community free of charge. =) -Builderz [View Quote] lanezeriDec 31, 2000, 8:45pm
Well.. I have to say Joeman has kept the bots up in USWF_PBL for a long
time.. everytime I am there.. they are up.. so I give him some credit.. also he said he hosts.. mySQL IRC server Telnet FTp damon thats a lot of hosting for a cable modem too.. so I think he deserves some credit.. holistic1Jan 1, 2001, 11:26am
You can test your firewall for free at Gibson Research Corp ( www.grc.com. ).

I have now removed my MySQL for the moment. Ans this is on a 'Dedicated'
server, i dont make reg changes, it dont play with the system. ~Joeman [View Quote] builderzApr 25, 2001, 5:28pm
I've already done this numerous times using several on-line security
scanners (not just the one located at GRC.com) with numerous configurations. Builderz Stuff-X - Bot & World Hosting Services http://www.stuffx.com/aw/ [View Quote] |
