Is there a way to disable the ability to "ctrl alt delete and end task" on
a windows 98 computer? bowenNov 6, 2001, 3:31pm
not without freezing the computer totally.. thank microsoft for that.
Unless you remove it from the registry (I think you can, can be fatal for your windows), though I'm not sure of the exact operation. --Bowen-- [View Quote] brandonNov 6, 2001, 3:47pm
ummm...why? that could be dangerous unless you know what your doing. If you
installed some kind of snoopware to watch on kids on the intenet or something then most good programs will eliminate a ctrl+alt+del for that program so they cannot close it [View Quote] data21Nov 6, 2001, 5:52pm
Reason I want it is for my world server, my sister keeps closing it that
way. There is really no accsess protection for the world server on the host side. There is for remote access but not host accsess. [View Quote] bowenNov 6, 2001, 5:54pm
Is there anyway you can tell her to stop doing it? Tell her it won't effect
anything, just leave it. :\ sister's are a pain. --Bowen-- [View Quote] ananasNov 6, 2001, 6:24pm
These few lines should do the job on a '98 but I cannot
test it, I have no no Win98 here : #include <windows.h> main() { SystemParametersInfo (SPI_SCREENSAVERRUNNING, 0, "1", 0); } I sent the compiled binary to Data earlier, but no response yet. [View Quote] -- "_ | /\ \ / __/ /_ bowenNov 6, 2001, 6:27pm
hmm I didn't think you could stop that popup.. could be bad if it stops the
ctrl+alt+del completely, wouldn't it? --Bowen-- [View Quote] ananasNov 6, 2001, 6:33pm

LoL knowing how some people like to be about stuff, she'll probably do that
now. --Bowen-- [View Quote] data21Nov 6, 2001, 7:48pm
I already tried telling her to stop it. She's stuck in her ways.
She keeps saying it locks up AOL IM, lol yea right I use that to and I have no problems with AOL IM and the world running. The only problem I have with the world is when I get bumped off-line the world server will sit there and open a never ending supply of dial up connections never reconnecting then eventually freezes the PC. My dial up is set to remember login name and pass and connect automatically when its needed. [View Quote] bowenNov 6, 2001, 7:52pm
I keep AIM on weekly.. no conflicts with me.. she's either running some
heavy duty bulky old AIM version or is lying through her teeth LoL. Just make sure it doesn't try to open your connection through IE, that might be the problem there, though not sure. --Bowen-- [View Quote] tyberiusNov 6, 2001, 8:56pm
I'd just unplug the monitor from the outlet, and try putting a protective
key cover over the reset and on off button, if that don't work tie and gag her when you're not on the computer :) g'luck Data Tyberius [View Quote] raven shadowNov 13, 2001, 10:47pm
Yes, this is commonly done by companies / libraries that offer computer
access to the public. Disabling it can be dangerous, 'cause you'll lose the ability to end bad tasks. With windows 98 , you can also use the windows scripting host to create a script that will monitor the world server for you & run it if it's shut down. msdn.microsoft.com to learn about the scripting host ( in the "Library" do a search for "Windows Scripting Host") http://www.regedit.com/ for the Windows Registry Guide , this is in the old windoew 95 .hlp file format , and instructions for changing various windows settings, including disabling the Program Manager.
