Joining worlds side by side (Wishlist)
Joining worlds side by side // WishlisttalisanMay 15, 2006, 3:42am
I would like to float the idea of joining worlds side by side to make larger
communities. Similar to SL's zones... but on a more voluntary method. I would propose that a grid be created. Say 10000 by 10000... and that if I wanted to license a p10 world, that I could place it anywhere within that grid... and treat it like its own world... but someone else could buy they own world, whatever size and choose a space near mine lets say... and I would be able to see their space from my space.. depending on vis... but any visitor to mine would be able to walk or fly to thiers.. no teleporting... granted, this would change a few things we are used to... like sky boxes, water, etc. It's just a suggestion :) Please share and elaborate your ideas. grimbleMay 15, 2006, 6:58am
Nice idea (!) ... but there are a number of hurdles to overcome, nominally
** A "community world" could easily end up fragmented as individual world licenses expire and are not renewed. ** Object paths/passwords could be an issue as AW stands at the moment. To make this attractive, participating worlds would need to be able to run on their own object paths. ** What do you do about world user limits? From what I've read (I can't play with them until 4.1 finally makes its debut to the public), Zones could enable this to a large extent in a single world. Zones are there to be exploited and I think they provide a better discrete environment than SL does. The object paths issue is always going to be there unless zones can override the world OP. We need to ecourage people to join and take part in some form of AW community without the need for someone to take a risk and fork out for a year's license on a sizable world with a high user limit. What I'd like to see is a more comptetitive pricing structure on larger worlds aimed at community development (with some protective restrictions in the license of course). I think AW almost has the capabilities now to achieve this, and it needs to be AWI that bring this to the masses ... basically like a more flexible version of AlphaWorld, where people can licence a plot and have full control (world-like) on that plot. Like I said, I think this is a nice idea. Grims [View Quote] equin0xMay 15, 2006, 8:46am
What will make it possible without any of the many hurdles, is if it is
simple a selectable.. Not such a grid, but more of a choice to join my world with worlds A,B,C,D. My world would be joined to world A to the north, B world to the east, etc. It's not quite the community prospect, but I would like to join my world with my friend's world. And yes, the community side of things is possible in single worlds with 4.1.. I'm sure you will see stuff like it in AW or even NewAw. :) [View Quote] kennethMay 15, 2006, 3:15pm
Or even have AWI have a new community world that they own, but like in
AWTeen, have terrain used with a bot and also with a bot to set perimeters for your land and make it like 50 coords by 50 coords limit per person. And have the ability to add your own object path, using a bot too, just 1 object path per person. I'm sure the multipath php script could be implented to the bot somehow. This would have to be a big world, so maybe like a P-20,000. Also have the ability to tell the bot to erase your area if you don't want it anymore and put it back to default flat land. The only things AW would have to set themselves is the sky and user limit. For the water, you can tell the bot which textures you want and what elevation you want it at. This would be really cool if it is done right. The only problem I guess is AW might lose money on people buying worlds, although if they wanted I guess they could charge for these plots of land, but have them cheaper than a regular world would be I hope. -Kenneth [View Quote] strike rapierMay 15, 2006, 10:00pm

I have played around with the zone feature briefly in another universe and unfortunately they are too limited to allow for such things as the ability to have their own sky-box, OP, etc. [View Quote] strike rapierMay 16, 2006, 3:39am

Alas yes, and you wont believe how long I spent hitting people around the
head going 'YOU WILL INTRODUCE LOCAL SCRIPTING'. Even a simple: world { skybox: dawn01; light-dir: inherit; } And I bet you someone could make such a parser in under 10 minutes. -- - Mark Randall http://www.temporal-solutions.co.uk "We're Systems and Networks..." "It's our job to know..." |
