Perfect Road Alignment For Avatars - Is It Possible? (Wishlist)
Perfect Road Alignment For Avatars - Is It Possible? // Wishlist

Hi everyone:
I'm BAAACK after a LONG hiatus.....Missed everyone...
Just downloaded AW 3.4 Beta (albeit in a different directory than where 3.3
is installed, though I may just go ahead and replace it with the beta
upgrade anyways :-)) and was exploring around AlphaWorld (Going down that
MAZE of a road better known as Abbey Road which FierceFerrette recently laid
down) and was wondering just how much effort would it take to make Perfect
Road Alignment For Avatars possible.
What do I mean by "Perfect Road Alignment For Avatars" you say??
Well....picture this. Most of us who go down a road which uses street1.rwx
like to use the lane in which normal cars would travel down first, right
(Right lane in the U.S., left lane in the UK and other parts of the world)??
Of course we do. However, given the fact that making a CLEAN turn around a
corner is EXTREMELY hard, but possible, I was wondering just how much more
work would it take to make Perfect Road Alignment For Avatars an option
whereas the browser can put the user in a position where they can down
straight down the road simply by pointing with your avatar the direction you
wish to travel.
The user can then slide over a little if the alignment is too close to the
middle of the road if needed simply by using the SHIFT+ARROW (or SHIFT+4 or
6 for those who like to use the keypad).
Take a piece of street1.rwx, mentally split it down the middle and give it
some thought. The responses on this should be interesting... :-)
Nice to be back.... :-)
Cheers for now :-)

that would be very difficult seeing as how the browser knows no differance
between a street.rwx and a couch.rwx ..however it could be done perhaps if
modelers were to enter a pre-defined comment line or something that AW could
search for, and if found in the object, align you as you wish by the
option...
however i'm not sure there is much of a need or desire for this option,
since it really makes no difference where in the road you walk, heh...

Well, you could say that our Avatars would not pass a sobriety test.
LOL

Yeah....Especially since they tend to slide from one side of the road to the
other as they move along.... :-) *LOL!*
But seriously though....At least it's wishful thinking :-)

Well, there are many possible variations on what it would appear you're asking for. One variation that I think you might find interesting would be the possibility of adding a function (assignable to a key) that would allow you to cause your avatar to turn to face what ever your mouse is pointing at, and then place your mouse cursor in the center of the 3D view. This would allow you to simply point at the end of the road or a place farther along the road and align to face that location with a single keypress.

It was this image that made me decide to make a drunk av that really sways
and has a wine glass in her hand. She could even fall down once in a
while...LOL
It is annoying, I gripe about it all the time. Oh well, at least they are
funny to watch.

Either that or simply turn the avatar with the keyboard and have it go down
the middle of the lane as if the road had "invisible grooves" of some sort
in it.
I once tried using a bump warp command option built within the road so that
avatars could move by themselves by lining up some window objects buried
pretty deep into the ground along BOTH sides of South Harborview Avenue once
I started building my train system, but that was apparently too confusing to
the browser and/or server as I found myself going Northbound when in fact I
was headed Southbound (in short, I found myself going UNCONTROLLABLY
BACKWARDS unless I was able to slide completely off the road). It got so
bad, I had to remove ALL of those window objects just so I could use the
street again.
But yeah....I suppose a point and click feature could work to accomplish
this. Point with the avatar in the direction you wish to travel and then
click ANYWHERE on the screen in the area of the road you want to travel on
and *VOILA!*. Perfect alignment. :-)
Make sense?? Comments anyone??

It's not only annoying to watch, but it's also annoying when you're trying
to go down the road to GO SOMEWHERE!! As some of you know, I'm NOT one who
likes to teleport to places I can just as easily get to by land, sea, or air
(easpecially in AlphaWorld). Just ask Yeti or BlankaM. They can vouch for
me on this. :-)
Now, OTOH, if we're talking going from Hamsterville all the way to someplace
ONTHE VERY EDGES of AlphaWorld (regardless of direction), THEN I'll teleport
(or at least warp my way) there (unless I decide to fly) as this would be
MUCH quicker. :-)
Cheers for now :-)

Something you might want to try, is teleporting to the coordinates you're already at, with a facing angle added at the end. For example, if you are on a road that faces west at 300n 100w, then teleport to 300n 100w 90
