Two Wishes: Streaming MP3s & Ogg Vorbis Support (Wishlist)
Two Wishes: Streaming MP3s & Ogg Vorbis Support // WishlistbuilderzFeb 15, 2001, 7:22pm
Since AW 3.1 has been released, it contains revamped sound code and
offers MP3 (MPEG-1 Layer 3) support. Here are two of my wishes for future versions of AW: 1. Streaming MP3 support. Need I say more? You wouldn't have to download the entire MP3 before hearing it play. On the flip side, the quality would be much lower if you encoded the MP3 to a streaming format for standard modem users. Another downside is that the stream may skip if the user is downloading files from a world's object path while the stream is playing (if the user is on a standard modem connection). This would be great for broadband connections, however. 2. Ogg Vorbis support. Ogg Vorbis is a high quality, patent and royalty free, open source, compressed audio format which also supports streaming. That means: NO LICENSING FEES. The main reason that the Active Worlds Browser doesn't support .gif files is because of royalties/licensing fees. More information about Ogg Vorbis can be found at http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/index.html. -Builderz j b e l lFeb 15, 2001, 10:22pm

Versions below 3.1 do NOT support MP3 files, but 3.1 supports both .WAV
files with an MP3 header (an "MP3 encoded wave") and standard MP3 files. It doesn't support streaming MP3 files, however (which was my first wish in my previous post). Have a look at http://www.activeworlds.com/help/aw31/mp3.html. -Builderz [View Quote] sw comitFeb 16, 2001, 3:05am
You know, I'm pretty sure Roland did say why he couldn't do streaming mp3s,
but I don't remember why, it was ye ol' history. wingFeb 16, 2001, 9:09pm
It's not an issue of can't do, it's an issue of won't do if I know whats
good for me. Streaming MP3s seems to be more offensive to the record industry or somthing. Their second least favorite thing after Napster. -- Wing This little spot is dedicated to my girl, Jessie.
