JPGs are a lossy compression format. Zipped BMPs would be a better way to go since BMPs aren't lossy and would still be compressed. Plus the mask could be zipped in the same ZIP, requiring only one call for textures, instead of 2. And the JPG wouldn't have to be converted back to BMP in order to work for most viewers (except Modeler, which is intelligent enough to read both formats, as well as zipped RWXs).

GIFs are fine except for the license issue. Zipped BMPs do have the
advantage of putting all required files into a single ZIP file. BMPs are
really big once unzipped, but they would have the advantage of not
needing decompression to use (after unzipping) like JPG, GIF, etc. This
might make the browser run faster?

I can't besides what's in my message below... try doing a search for it on a
search engine and see what comes up.

See http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/ and particularly
http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/pngintro.html .

PNG is not a replacement for JPEG, but it's better for images with
sharp edges and/or few colors (especially text-based signs/logos/etc.).
Zipped BMPs are in the same class as PNG, and support for them would
be trivial to add to the browser since it basically already exists.
PNG support would be nice but would also be more work, especially if
Roland were to try to support full alpha-blending and gamma-correction;
I'm sure he has higher priorities.
