See http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/ and particularly http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/pngintro.html . PNG is not a replacement for JPEG, but it's better for images with sharp edges and/or few colors (especially text-based signs/logos/etc.). Zipped BMPs are in the same class as PNG, and support for them would be trivial to add to the browser since it basically already exists. PNG support would be nice but would also be more work, especially if Roland were to try to support full alpha-blending and gamma-correction; I'm sure he has higher priorities. -- Greg Roelofs n_e_w_t_(at)_p_o_b_o_x_(period)_c_o_m Newtware, PNG Group, Info-ZIP, Philips Multimedia Center, ... >Actually most VRML plug-ins (Blaxxun, Cosmo, Netscape's Livewhatever,
>etc) use RW as the rendering engine. ;P You've been smoking something, Eep. No VRML browser has used RW since Cosmo 1.0 (which actually was Netscape's Live3D 2.0), and that was two years ago. Current browsers, including Cosmo 2.x, WorldView, Cortona, blaxxun's Contact, Lookat, FreeWRL, etc., all use either OpenGL or D3D or both. Source is available for a couple of them. -- Greg Roelofs n_e_w_t_(at)_p_o_b_o_x_(period)_c_o_m Newtware, PNG Group, Info-ZIP, Philips Research, ... |
