op host on XP-IIS? (Community)
op host on XP-IIS? // Community.ms.liladylia.Jan 14, 2005, 11:20am
Anybody know a good source for setting up My op host
on XP Pro, SP2; IIS5.1; LynkSys router/switch? I can't seem to access the op, locally or remotely, with the aw browser, regardless of whether I host the world locally or on a remote server(Unix). I'm sure its a "path" problem of some kind, but can't seem to figure out what the op path should be in the browser. Appreciate any help from anyone hosting an op on XP-IIS server. Thanks, lvlistress sweJan 14, 2005, 1:47pm
not too sure about it, but try the technice for getting a world server to
work, at http://www.andras.net/router_aw/router_aw.html i'm guessing it should be the same, just use a diffrent port number (probably 80). -SWE [View Quote] strike rapierJan 14, 2005, 3:23pm
For a start, hosting an OP on XP Pro is a bad idea - you can only have 10
simultainious connections (thats 3.3 users in your world). You need a proper server class OS like 2003 or .NET - MR [View Quote] john doughJan 14, 2005, 5:18pm

I currently host multiple worlds and OPs on a pc with an XP Pro OS. Although
I do not use the included webserver s/w included in XP Pro. So Im not sure about those user limits with that. However, I have tried various 3rd party server software. A very easy to use program that works well and is free is Ability Webserver and it sets up relatively easily, but it does have I think a 10 simultaneous user limit. And it doesnt support alot of security or data based languages like php, asp etc. I now have moved to an Apache Server, there a free downloads of their s/w available directly from them, although it is a little more difficult to understand and setup properly to work within the XP OS environment. But it works great once you figure it out, and it has all the bells and whistlles required for security or database serving. kartenJan 14, 2005, 5:56pm
First, don't compare hosting a world and hosting an OP.
A world can be run form almost any computer on the internet, with only a few limitations, esp where a router is involved. An Object Path IS in fact a normal Internet Web Site, just arranged special for the purpose. So normal WWW and FTP accesses (if you need remote uploading) are needed, and the OP location needs to be a fixed IP and/or Domain, it should not be on a connection that changes IP addresses, like dial-up and some DSLs. (Even some cables.) World and OP can run from the same computer, but they are very different access handling on the internet, and not at all similiar. Karten [View Quote] andrasJan 14, 2005, 6:20pm
