Has anyone lese had problems with your contact list vanishing when you are
in a heavy download world? and to get it back you have to (1) (more or
less) wait for the downloads to end and for the Contact List to Refresh
(like the world list does periodically), or (2) bounce to another world
which will usually case the contact list to restore, or (3) close and
restart AW.
And once it is back and you go back to finish reload that or another world
(if you didn't wait for it to finish) do you perhaps have it vanish again?

I think ever since version 3.4 and later I've had this happen. The World
List is still there but just the Contact List disappears until I do one of
the 3 steps above. And it doesn't really matter which world it happens in.
It not related to the World Server. I get no waiting for server or
anything and if there is anyone in the world when this happens I still see
them and can talk to them and the objects and textures continue to download
and I can move to other areas in the world and those areas will continue to
download. Just no contact list until I take one of the above 3 actions.
I don't think it's a connection problem on my end because a year ago I had
Charter Pipeline with 1m/128k and later they increased the speed to 2m/128k
and just recently again to 3m/256k and I've had the problem during all 3
speed services. Also if I run the speakeasy bandwidth test on any of their
site around the US I get a consistent 2.2 - 2.5meg download speed and about
239k up. And if I do Tweak Test on DSL Reports web site I get no problem
issues there.

If I do trace routes to auth.activeworlds.com however I do get some response
times ranging from about 40 to 400+ ms at times on the 1st couple of hops
just prior to the AW auth server hop and an occasional packet loss or
timeout on a few of the vario.net hops just before those that are in
between me, Charter, and Broadwing (charter backbone here).

If anyone else is having this problem please post it or email
support at activeworlds.com so they can maybe try to look into the cause. I
kinda think maybe it's routing issues maybe with vario.net or maybe the
sometimes high response times on the ISP AWI is using just prior to the auth
server hop.

Contact lists are related to the universe server, not to the world
server. So are telegrams. I've heard of and experienced serious
problems with both, but I can't give details as I have not really
studied the matter.

Yeah, it happens to me quite often. It'd be nice in 3.6 if it was fixed.

Looks very likely so as it is a problem on the side of your provider.
400ms is quite a big number for a broadband connection, you would expect
that rather with a modem connection. A "normal" response time would be
ca. 10-40ms, depending on the distance (add ca. 70-90 for cross-american
and/or cross-atlantic).

Large repsonse times and packet losses point to insufficent lines, most
probably it is a load problem in your resp. Verios case.

With a good connection, disconnects from the universe server should
almost never happen.

Other reasons for a broken connection could be eg. an overload on your
side, for example in the router or gateway (when you use those) or in
your machine itself, eg. temporarily not enough sockets or short
timeouts (when you are up- or downloading heavily at the same time or
some other application steals the computing slots or freezes the
machine).

In a good environment, you should be able to maintain the server
connection for days without any interruption.

This is the Ghosting effect you see when your browser loses contact with the
Universe server.
Contacts dissappear, you cannot send or receive telegrams, and others do not
see you online
on thier contact lists.

If you know you are in that condition or suspect it, simply go to LOGIN on
the menu bar, CITIZEN, and click OK to reestablish connection to the
universe server. (Put in the password of course if you need to.)

Your contacts should reappear and telegrams work again.

This has been a long time problem and not a new one by any means.

those high response times are not on my end they are close to AWI's end.
