That's right folks TS5 will be free in the April edition of 3D World magazine. What is more, if you take out a years subscription to the magazine for $59 you get an upgrade to version 6 absolutely free of charge. What are you waiting for?
3D World issue #79 should be in the shops from April 1st. |

If this turns out to be an April Fools joke, I am leaving Caligari for good.
Because I am calling my local book store to see if they will reserve a copy for me now.
EDIT
I just thought of something. that would be April 1 in the UK or US? I'm 'across the pond' as the saying goes. That means I have to wait til May right?

Anyway, I was just getting ready to decide if I want to spend the $99 on tS now I see this. I had until April 3 to decide. Now all I have to do is wait a month and I can get it for $59.

Hmph. A little thing called time zones. It's still March where I am.
What I meant was, is it coming out April 1 in the UK or April 1 in the US since there is a delay. If it was April 1 in the US then UK would already have it.

Splinters: That was a bit of a low blow for those that don't even have 6.x yet, like Naes & Brian.
Now, if perhaps you'd created a new thread with something like the pic of your avatar & an explanation saying that you'd been hired for a new ad campaign & that the reason your avatar looked grumpy was 'cos you "should have gone to Specsavers"*, then that would have been both a good April 1st gag, & amusing. ;)

I am trying to determine if the reason I don't find it funny is because I fell for it or because it really wasn't funny.
Right now, the best I can say is that I can see the humor but I'm fairly certain I would not have made the same joke if circumstances were reversed. |

The whole purpose of an April Fool is that point where you slap your forehead and curse yourself for ever falling for it. In analysing whether or not it might be 'below the belt' because of the version of Ts you own you take all the fun out of it...and miss the point.
Naes, I just realised the coincidence that you were considering buying TS6.6..this joke was certainly not aimed at you.
Do you think the italians were offended by the famous spaghetti harvest of 1957....C'mon guys...lighten up....;)

Yes, but the whole purpose of the trueSpace website is to get people excited about owning trueSpace. You accomplished that and then took it away.
There is an art to sharing humor. The best jokes are the ones where everybody is laughing and nobody is being laughed at.
Not that I haven't made my fair share of bad jokes. I think where this koke failed is that it was too plausible. Both Shade 7 and Carrara 2.1 are being given away this month, so why not tS... |

Even the horse in the bar (with the long face) had one.
If you can't laugh at yourself, rest assured, someone else will do it for you.
Splinters: 'Good one!'- I saw the topic and was getting ready to fire off emails to tS-less friends until the joke became obvious.-You 'got' me too.
Someone on the forum has a signature line about 'humor and frog dissection' and if I could remember it well enough to quote it it would apply here. |

I can only get issue #75 of 3DWorld where I am at, issue #79 is coming out??? :( Now those specs are traditional US Navy regulation specked glasses, commonly know as Birth Control Objects ;).

Well...
A man speaks to his doctor after an operation. He says, "Doc, now that the surgery is done, will I be able to play the piano?" The doctor replies, "Of course!" The man says, "Good, because I couldn't before!"
Some might say that the Doctor was the butt of that joke, but the 'butt' of the joke usually suffers for his part in it. It would be hard to say the doctor suffered for the humor.
As far as the quote you remember:
Author E.B. White once said that "Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind."
Doesn't actually apply here as the point is more about whether the joke was appropriate rather than whether it was funny. Everyone won't find the same things funny. I actually would have found it funnier had it been anywhere other than the Caligari website. If anybody were to read this and not find the humor, then Caligari would bear some of the brunt of their frustration. |

Dear, oh dear.
As I said...no malice was intended and this was not a joke aimed at anyone.
It was just about plausible but then that is the 'joke'. And considering the date and tradition of an April fool, it should be considered more of a prank.
And did it work? Well considering the responses YES.
Some got it straight away-some didn't. Some enjoyed it, some didn't.
A bit like trueSpace 7 then...;)
To say TS7 was free would have been plain ridiculuous and to post it on another site would probably have guaranteed it total obscurity.
The prank was played and now the game is up-it is now irrelevant.
For anyone still trying to ring their bookstore
