It's been months since I've worked on a personal project, so I'm going to throw my hat in for this month's MMC. (Like I need more work to do...)

Title for the project is: "Lurking in the Darkness"

Anycase, here's the concept sketch:
18735

And some early wires of the cave:
18736

I started with a 16x32 plane. I'm beginning to cut in detail and pushing and pulling vertices to create the basic shape of the cave.

Even though I sense that something's amiss, I still can't fight the urge to go inide this newly discovered cave that seemed to appear out of nowhere !!!:D

:D

Here's an update before I retire for the night:
18737

The columns need a bit of tightening up, but at this point most of the basic structure for the cave is worked out, and I'm starting to add the ceiling beginning at the back and working my way forward.

Great to see you able to find some time to enter the MMC, Jack. I always learn loads from your threads so will be eagerly watching this one. This is looking good already and I can see the potential opening up for a really atmospheric scene here.

Finding time is relative. ;)

Now will I actually finish something... there is the question... :p

Quick update:
18908

I've decided to leave the rest of ceiling open while I work on the creature, so that I can try modeling it inside the cave where it's going to go. Instead of trying to pose it later. ;)

Cool, I like your concept sketch.

Nice work so far.:)

I have a photo similar to that last image. Was a result of an unfortunate ski accident. :)

i been wondering when you make something big, like a cave, or a room or scenery, are you making it big? i dont understand what you do when making scenery, the scaling of everything, so is the cave the size of that lurker? then when you want to animate the lurker in the cave, or get camera shots, you scale the lurker down, or scale the cave up...

It's to scale, 1 unit = 1 meter. I used a man sized stand-in to get the general dimensions roughed in. For the Lurker, I eyeballed it. Then once I had enough of it blocked out, I placed it in the cave and scaled to the size I wanted and froze the axis so that so that it was set to 1.0 scale at that size.

I don't have a lot of experience with modeling backgrounds, so this is pretty much my first time. ;) I'm hoping I'll have enough time to finish since this should be a fun one to texture.

Spent yesterday messing around with rigging and stuff, it was going ok, but I decided today just to model the pose. It turned out to be the correct choice as I whipped the tentacle positioning in less than an hour:

19187

Still to do:
Teeth. Maybe add a claw to each tentacle...
Finish the cave.
Water.
UV unwrap.
Paint.
Render.

Let me know what you guys think. :)

It looks awesome, do you have 3D-Coat or Zbrush?
Either of those will make it really easy to texture.

You could even use the 3D-Coat voxel tools and add things like suction cups on the tentacles etc.
It's quite easy to make organic things with voxel.

Thanks Robert! :)

Z-brush is on my want list for apps when money allows. In my first major software expenditure in a while, I picked up Photoshop CS4 Extended included in CS4 Design Premium last week. So I might play with the new 3D paint features there.

The UV unwrapping will be done in Headus UV Layout, so should only take about an hour or so once the modeling is finished.

Added the teeth:

The Lurker is coming out a bit too smooth and regular so I'm thinking about freezing the Sub-D layer and using the soft paint tools to lumpy him up a bit. ;)

Guess this is it for tonight. I'm going to get some sleep so I can finish up the geometry first thing tomorrow morning.

It's looking real good Jack. I love how you have wrapped the tentacle around the rock spire. Can't wait to see this all textured up.

I think the last time I saw you texture something was a german shepard and his dog house?
I hope you find the time to finish this one.
Curious to see which view you select too.
The shape of the creature's teeth actually gave me an idea for a future project so thanks!
Cool that every Artist's entry has their unique style and yours is also evident.
(nothing to do with your "unfinished work grave yard":D)
Good luck Jack.

Haha, Steinie. I remember getting partway through texturing the gnomish computer. :p

Thanks guys! And looking forward to seeing Steinie's new idea. :D

Added some water:

Dunno if all that work I put into detailing the cavern is going to even show by the time it renders, lol.

Cave is pretty much finished. Here's a real-time lighting test:

19212

Couple of tweaks and then I think it'll be time to unwrap the UVs. :)

Looks pretty good Jack!

Though everyone's waiting for the UV's, I'm really learning to enjoy looking at meshes. It's like an art form in it's own right. :)

I like it. I would like to see either nostrils and/or eyes (at the sides of the head, just visible. The SoftPaint tools will help give it some organic feel also (I saw your mention before)...

Nice to see where it goes from here.

Thanks guys. It's sort of a plant/squid thing so was planning to go eye and nostril-less, but I'm out of time for modeling anyway. Here's the cave UVs:

Will post the Lurker UVs in a few mins.

And Jack's are always particularly good - he has a real knack of making meshes for SDS and he makes it look so easy - so you should definitely study his meshes! Great job so far Jack - looking forward to seeing what render engine you use and how it turns out...

Thanks, Nez and Nealiosnoise. Guess it's crunch time on the textures now. I'm thinking to use YafaRay to render it since it has better glass (for the water) than the current TS VRay implementation, but we'll see. ;)
