This so reminds me of early sci fi movies, I think even a particular one, but I forget which one it was. Maybe someone already mentioned it in the thread, I've been watching the image grow in this one more than reading the text :O

Wish I could remember what movie it was...

Thanks!

Tom

Considering my affection for space, flight, and science from an early age, I'm definitely enjoying the journey !

Yeah, SDS is great. :)

It stretches UV's around though which can be rather frustrating.

Wow! thanks again forall the comments and support guys.

@ jamesmc - Lol. Yeah, likewise james. I can't wait till 3D printers become really affordable. :D

@ TomG - Well, its not based on anything in particular Tom, but being a movie fan you have got me reallly intrigued. Your not thinking of the likes of Destination Moon are you?

@ Mr. 3D - Sit back and enjoy the ride. :)

@ marcel - Ahh, The Fifth Element, one of my favourites.

Here is the latest update. Again, it doesn't look much, but I spent most of the evening creating some quite sophisticated textures for the space station in Paint Shop Pro - only to find that when applied, they really looked out of place. So I ended up applying the most rudimentry porthole texture which bizzarly looks a heck of a lot better. Talking of mis-matches, I'm begining to wonder if the Space Liner is also out of synch with the rest of the scene. Will be very intrested on the feedback on this one.

It's looking very good indeed! Love the placement and the whole "unfinished look" to the hotel. Just like the dreams of yesterday - still under construction!

Breech,

coming on very well, the texture on the space station looks good to me.

The spaceliner looks very cool, nice job on the texture. SDS is fun but tricky - you really have to think about what you're trying to achieve! You raise an interesting point though - it is quite 'sleek' compared to the other craft, as if maybe from a different era, but in fairness it is a 'luxury' craft as opposed to the more 'utility' vessels surrounding it - only question remains is whether the tourists in the liner should be visiting yet when the hotel clearly isn't finished - although that's hardly a new problem in the Med for example...!

Only other thing that struck me was that your lighting is possibly a bit 'gentle' - sci-fi space scenes are often quite harshly lit with strong shadows from one key light source (e.g. the sun) with less attenuation (no atmosphere I guess) - whether this is realistic or just a sci-fi affectation I don't know (W!zard would probably love to tell you!).

NB - 5th Element is one of my faves too - very cool, but silly, film :D

Looking great! It might be Destination Moon, it's definitely that sort of thing, though I seem to recall a particular rocket ship in this one too - but it may be from a different movie and I'm just mixing them up due to age - both mine, and the movies ;)

If I ever find it, I will let you know, but it's definitely a great image and capturing the feel of that time period very nicely!

I would say it looks like its based on 2001 Odyssey

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm848664576/tt0062622

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm952670720/tt0062622

Both the spinning gravity wheel and the Pan -am liner(yes they didnt

know that it would run out of buisnesss then in 1968.........

But its a very good interpretation of the scene not just 1 to 1....:)

Thanks again for the C&C guys. Well, after another round of improvements I'm gonna have to call it quits as I will be away from my PC for the rest of the week. :(

@ Kena - Glad you like it; especially the composition as that is an area I'm definitely trying to improve on.

@ Tom - Ahh the old memory starting to go eh? Welcome to the club. :D

@ Rayman - Thanks Peter. If it wasn't for the brief detailing a retro look I would have done something very different. But yeah, 2001 is such a classic it's hard not to draw comparisons/be influenced.

@ Nez - I was certain I only had one light till I double-checked after reading your C&C. Doh! Gonna have to start working in layers and lock all this stuff off. The luxury element to the Space Liner was definitely in my head when I started to model it. During my research I concluded that only a "Luxury Brand" would have the financial clout/stability to undergo such a project. Lets face it, were not going to see a Travel Inn or Little Chef in orbit just yet are we. But the model still jarred when I placed it in the scene. I think I have managed to negate some of that by adding the Hilton logo to the space station. As for the station not being finished, even the space station in 2001 A Space Odyssey was only half built y'know. Having a half built space station is to retro sci-fi what a dirty vest is to Bruce Willis. :D

So, other improvements to this final version include moving the Earth to a less cluttered location, adding a rocket exhaust to the departing cargo shuttle to lift it out of the image a bit more, raising the new construction panels in the other cargo ship a bit higher so that they are more apparent, adding the Hilton logo as mentioned and changing the lighting set-up. Phew...job done.

Last, but not least, a big thanks once again to all the folk who took the time to write a comment. It is very much appreciated and I know the image is certainly better off for it. :)

No, not 2001 - the shape of the station is more what they had 10 years before that or so in movies. 2001 manages to look much more modern in its designs. The space liner addition does look more 2001, but that element is the one least like the movies I am thinking of :)

HTH!

Aha found it! The one it made me think of was "Conquest of Space" from 1955, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/index.html?curid=12945463, that's also the odd spaceship I was trying to think of.

The cover is just like the spacesuits here and everything, a very good capture of the feel of sci fi of the time I would say :) Some links just to show what I was thinking of:

Whew glad I got that, it was going to bug me otherwise ;)

Those panels getting pulled out of the cargo ship look like the icon for sheets of paper. :p

Usually, after I have submitted an image for a challenge, I'm quite keen to get back to one of my other numerous projects. However, for some strange reason I feel this image still needs some tinkering. Here is the latest incarnation.

Nice composition. a small crit. with the earth where it is, the head is shown to be a bit wider than a head normally is. Or it could be just an optical illusion.
I would have something else coming out of the one rocket. as mentioned before, it looks like paper now.
Love the hotel shuttle and the hotel tho. and the space-suit is spot-on.

Having the station closer to earth makes it more believable.
Originally it looked almost as far away as the moon, maybe farther.

Earth size looks similar to your original doesn't it?
