This is really quite an intriguing piece of work, Kena. Can't wait for the reveal.

Only things I can point out is that the image is somehow giving me the impression that the light quality hitting the floor is different to that hitting the table. Dunno why that is, its just an impression I'm picking up.

With regards the shadows on the objects, my personal preference would be to have the lights at a right angle to the viewer. At the moment, it appears as if the lights are opposite me as the blocks are casting shadows (judging by the darkened faces) directly at me. If that is the case, then what is the source of the light because directly in front of me is a room corner and an internal door. In addition, with an internal door, the wall to the right is very unlikely to have a window in it. So my brain is expecting the light either from directly above via a ceiling light or from the left hand side from an unseen window.

Hope all that makes some kind of sense is of some use.

Ah.. an overhead light and a lamp in the corner behind you... sort of. the far left corner actually.

The colours on the origami objects certainly seem very intense compared to the rest of the scene; if it was LW I'd wonder if the ambient setting was too high but I don't know whether VRay has similar settings - something just doesn't look quite right with the material - not sure if it's the material settinsg or response to light... is it supposed to be coloured paper?

On the lighting/shadows, I'm guessing Steinie meant that it would be good for the shadowing to add soem depth to the objects as they seem a little 'flat' at the moment, again possibly due to the materials. With a GI/HDRI type lighting I'd have thought that those objects with a visible interior would be darker inside than they appear to be....

As for DOF, I'm assuming VRay must be able to do something in this regard as Prodigy was always using DOF in his renders - maybe see if you can get him to elaborate on his preferred method....?

It's an interesting scene, still interested to see how it's going to end up...

Does this look better then?

I changed the material on the Oragami and moved my "window" to behind and slightly right of the eye. I left the "lamp" behind to the left of the "eye"

Much better!
Was it intentional to have the pieces perpendicular to the table?
There used to be an excellent DOF tool made by Stan in the garage that would have helped with VRay settings but it no longer is there.
I'm curious where this is headed...:)

well.. Yes. because when I make my origami, I always line them up. Just a personal preference.

The joke comes in with the object that I have not yet placed on the table. It's a bit of a play on words, but I will put in a caption as a hint.

Looks great kena!!!

So that I am clear, there is a window to the right of the image that we cannot see and then there is a lamp to the left of the image that we cannot see. Those are the two light sources.

The reason I am trying to determine the light sources is because there does not appear to be a "dark side", except the lower parts, of the oragami. Each side on each object appears equally as bright and I would expect maybe a tad color difference, and maybe I am just jumping ahead in your process and you aren't there yet :)

The light I'm using as the window is above and to the right and the light I'm using as a lamp is above and to the left. Both behind the viewer. So shadows appear below the objects. If you think of the top of my table as being about 2 feet, then the window light is at about 3.5 feet and the lamp is about 4.5 feet. Hope that helps.

You could try varying the a) intensity (is it brighter outside or in?) and probably more importantly b) the color say, a cooler blue-white from the window and a warmer incandescent tone from the lightbulb. I'd agree that right now they are very similar and are flattening/washing out the colors on the origami. Don't forget the rim (http://www.3drender.com/light/3point.html) or backlighting!

Great job kena. Unfortunately my eyes suck and I can't read the full name so the joke is lost on me.
