Congratulations Prodigy on being a Pioneer with the new Tutorium. It looks very good. If everyone starts to contribute their skill sets we will all be better trueSpace users.

Thanks,

Bob

Tut looks fantastic Prodigy! Too bad I don't have V-Ray. Maybe later this year. I am going to try it with Virtualight though.

I definately think that we should post in a companion thread to each tutorial made.

Maybe when the author finishes the post he or she can ask Norm to close the post so there can be no further posting to cloud up the tutorial. That way, the only listing in the tutorial thread is the tutorial itself.

Yes, thats the idea.. close the post to mantain an order..

Here is a render, one of my first using VirtuaLight few years ago with global illumination..

You can make realy preaty renders too and i love the lens effect..

I must be honest, i have problems trying to get good light bounces on interior scenes but in exterior works preaty well..

I'll try it later today. Barely got started on it before I left.

Great tutorial Prodigy. I've always wondered how to get that kind of lighting, now I know. Thanks for sharing the objects too.

An excelent tutorial - Now I wish I had purched Vray when it was on special, but I just didn't have the funds over the hollidays. I downloaded the tutorial scn anyway and played with it a bit. I must say that your v-ray version is much better. <sigh>

Okay Augusto,

Got a little bit of headway. Not satisfied yet. Will work on it a bit more tomorrow, but the potential is there I think. Some simple texturing. Vase is way too reflective.

Whatcha Think?

By the way, for everyone else, this is with the Virtualight engine:

Thanks,

I did this in TS7.11. Maybe I'll bring it back into 6.6 to see what I can do with it. The VL engine in 7.11 is a slight bit more limited than 6.6, but I think that was mostly to integrate it better. I'll play with it tomorrow and see what I can do.

Yes the plan is to open thread and let author work on the tutorial. I can close it afterwards when it is finished. I could also reopen if author wishes to change or add or such. Any posts that make it into the tutorial that should go in the "questions" thread, can be moved so hopefully this process will work as intended. If anyone has any comments or suggestions, we can look at refining the process to a point where most are happy with it.

Very nice tutorial btw prodigy.

..... who's next? :)

The only suggestion I would make is that the last submission the Author makes is a link to the question thread. Then have it closed as you said Norm.

Prodigy, How did you get the "GI/HDRI Sampling" to show up in the stack? I can get "Global Illumination" to show up but not GI/HDRI.

Steinie, you see in your image on the Top / Right hand? "FULL" ???

In your case maybe you have the default.. If you change to "full" you gonna get the Full Panel.. GI, HDRI , Caustics.. Hope that help!! :)

Now that I would REALLY like to see - I'm still stuck with TS5 and would love some pointers on achieving nice lighting within the limitations of that version. In other words - I don't have GI :( and the area lights don't work properly!

I had a go at following through the tutorial anyway (was quite pleased to find that TS5 would open the scene file you'd posted, didn't think it would).

In place of the GI at the very beginning, I tried using a pair of IBLs to give some soft low intensity light and then added the directional light - reasonably ok result. But when adding the area lights with similar intensity had very little effect compared to your area lights. Even if I increased the intensity substantially, still struggled to have a similar effect. Also - I'm assuming yo had shadows turned on for the area lights (to get the table shadow seen in the foreground?) My area lights won't cast shadows at all, as far as I can tell!

With a local light the result was something like the image below.... not bad, but I'm sure you could come up with some tricks to improve? I'd prefer to avoid radiosity as I can never get the settings right and always get poor results... (I must be doing something wrong!)

Any suggestions?

IBL's were my best friend before tS7...:D

Now HDRI (or Vray) get all the attention. Saying that though, I had a really nice image that I needed to update and I simply couldn't repeat the 'charm' of that image...what do you know; it was the IBL...:)

Yeah, IBLs look promising - I've only recently started looking at them and have some way to go before learning how to use them to their best as I obviously don't get the best out of them yet... know of any good IBL tutorials?

They really hurt my pc too...so slow.

Mind you, they seem more reliable than area lights which seem totally weird in TS5 - I vaguely remember them working ok in TS4.3, so I may have to dig that back out to try again...
