hi.

in my hobby i create UI's for audio plugins - see my website in my sig for examples. up until now i've been doing this entirely in 2D using photoshop, tricks, and imagemagick. the process is complicated but leveraging tweens and the power of the scripting language gives one the ability to do most things.

my request is for a tutorial that details simply this:

an animation that consists of nothing but a flat plane with a lit texture, but with a hole carved in it where a "knob" like on a radio tuner sticks through and casts a shadow, has a different material (steel?) and then is rotated on the timeline with animation in the same stance of camera (it is vital the camera remain unmoved) for exactly 93 frames (this is key too so that the 12 o'clock position on the dial is in the center of the timeline and can be exactly facing this way and also so that there are an equal number of frames on each side of it's bipolar values system).

so the animation would start with it's knob pointing at about -135 degrees, rotate exactly 46 frames and face perfectly up at 90 degrees, rotate exactly 46 more frames and face perfectly the -45 degrees.

ie:

keyframe: / (pointing down -135 degrees)

keyframe: | (pointing up 90 degrees)

keyframe: \ (pointing down -45 degrees)

the knob poking through should cast a shadow, and can have any materials / textures :) same with the plane. for extra credit it would be great to see special shaders making a value read out on the plane change with the rotation of the knob :)

the final destination will be to use in program in a stacked orientation (vertical or horizontal) with fixed frame sizes (arbitrary) and on a completely transparent background (PNG 24bit RGBA)

:P

if someone can help me with this, it would teach about 50% of what i need to know and get me going pretty good on autopilot.

there are advanced topics in it already i know but, this is a humble request :)

sorry to be so specific and explicit, just know that it's appreciated!

forgot to mention, i can donate / pay a small fee for this tutorial if needed. i know how difficult it is to train people well.

A PM to Jack Edwards, Dele, TrueBlue or Stan (I apologize to any of the other scriptors I neglected to mention), these guys would be able to help you set up a custom control panel to control an animated panel for you. Another place to try is the Tuesday night Scriptors meeting in Shared Space. These guys are all (all of the scriptors!) are very friendly and helpful. I am sure they would be happy to get you up to speed.

thanks for the tip.

it's not so much scripting that i need help with is the basic timeline stuff too :) the scripting would just be icing on the top of the cake :)

a model with animation doing it statically would be perfect too. just need to get an idea how difficult it is and if it's worth the extra effort or if i should stick with photoshop.

What I was getting at is Procedural animation

http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/newprocanim.asp?Cate=Training&SubCate=Master

While that is not exactly what you want to do the principle is you turn a slider in your custom interface and your knob/dial turns. Even I can do some of the easier types of setups, so I am sure someone clever like you could do it also :)

clever - thanks, perhaps yes, but truespace clever no :P

i think i know what you mean though. i'm still working through the trueCurriculum - romans spirit of the interface is awe inspiring. chamfers and fillets are absolutely cool.

so much to learn! this is why i request the tutorial :)
