And saw their free software this month was a texture generator called "MapZone".

It looks pretty cool and was wondering if anybody has used it w/ TrueSpace?

Rings a bell... hrm...

Ah, I thought I remembered someone mentioning it rather recently:

I thought it was a stand alone 2D texture making program. (Save as jpg and stuff..)

It doesn't have a plug in peice for TrueSpace like Simboiant does it?

Nope (at least, not that I know of); I believe it is in fact a standalone app.

I got the 3D World yesterday, installed MapZone, and stayed up until 2AM playing with it.

It's pretty neat - It's not the end-all-do-all-of-texturing, but it's going to be a nice tool for the arsenal.

I downloaded MaPZone 2.5, and went through the tour, but when I got to the tutorials to create textures, I got lost on step 2.
http://www.mapzoneeditor.com/?PAGE=DOCUMENTATION.WoodBase

I just don't know... These people put the tutorials up as though the client has had extensive experience with the program. It goes...
drop this into the editor and add these two... Then make them look like what you see. No explanation on how.
Then in step 2 it says add these 4 and set them up like you see. But "these 4" are actually 5 with extra stuff as well.

If anyone knows where a tutorial of how to actually do things is located, please let me know. I'm lost. :(

I cannot seem to find one that actually does a step-by-step.

I was confused at first too.

Then I looked through the documentation on their web site.

Try this for starters:

http://www.mapzoneeditor.com/?PAGE=DOCUMENTATION.FilterNodes

It's a quick & dirty overview of all the different types of nodes and what inputs & outputs are.

Take the colorize node:

You give it a greyscale image source. It's output will be a colorized version of that image.

The actual colorazation that gets applied will be whatever color gradient you tell it to use. The color positions in the gradient are mapped to the corrosponding grey shades in the image.

ie - the far left edge of the gradient is the "pure black" edge, so whatever color is there gets placed in the "pure black" pixels of the image.

The right edge of the gradient is the "pure white", so whatever color is there gets placed in the pure white pixels. Whatever color is at the 50% position of the gradient gets put in the 50% grey pixels, etc... You get the idea.

After looking through some of that, the other tutorials made more sense..

still didn't help with the wood tutorial though. I forced my way through step 2, and all of a sudden, in step 3 you are creating a whole new thing using the results gained in two separate paths of step 2, but no information on how to get those two in there.

I will, naturally keep trying, but I doubt that it will get much easier. I did post about it a couple of places on their forums, but judging on how long ago a post was made before mine, it could be months before any help is given there.

Makes me appreciate this set of forums all the more :D

Edit... I did get a brain storm, and figured out that when they say "results from..." they actually mean "connect the last module from the previous step to the first module in the current step"

But so far, I have a slightly grainy brown texture with a blurred spot - I will keep going. after I got to bed... It's 4 hours past my bed time.

OK today, I ignored about 15% of the tutorial and kinda went out on my own and came up with this.

Let me know what you think. The zip file contains the rsmat file for the wood texture.

Hey! That looks pretty cool! I like it!

I played with it again last night and got a pretty good stone wall started.

Not famuliar enough with the tools to get it the way I want, but working on it ;)

The learning curve is very steep. It would be better if there were better tutorials for it, but I supose that for a free program, it's not too bad. ;)

I know what you mean. I'm still looking for a good reference document and if I find one I will let you know.

Another texture program I'd absolutely love to get is Darktree. I'd love to make some new shader files for Simbiont! Unfortunately I don't have the $'s for it :(

I've only justseen this thread - I don't go to the Garage very often because my garage at home is full of spiders! (Not really - :D)/

Re Mapzone - yeah it's not the most intuitive thing to use but I've had some very satisfactory results from tweaking the existing materials in the supplied library. I've not yet learned enough that I would attempt ti start a texture from scratch but deconstructing the original textures is very informative.

Wasn't there a similar program designed to add procedurals to realtime game-engine type displays? A kind of plugin for DX rendering.

You can go to 3d world mags web site here http://www.3dworldmag.com/

Then scroll down, you will see a link to their forum. Thats where they answear questions about tutorials etc.

I think you could probably find the answear there because if you had such problems, then lots of others had problems too, and would be asking, talking about it there.
