Hey folks, I'm puttin this up cuz im just curious to see what others think of my work in progress so far, the lighting, the overall composition of the image, etc. Maybe even a suggestion or two :D
sum basic info...
Its rendered in v-ray 1.5
there are NO actual lights in the scene, and id like to keep it that way.
and um... yeah, its still early in progress... as u can see in this simple render. |

The simpler that scene is the nicer it is.
Its pretty cool I like it
It just needs something to catch the eye on the big wall in
the bacfkgrond a sculpture or a painting that has 2 small
spotlights pointed at it some ies typ light.. |

So the lights casting the shadows (you know the lights that don't exist) are surrounding this environment so that the pillar shadows are inward? That would indicate that this Gallery is within a larger area, correct? I'm not sure why you have an aversion to a real light. Is this an experiment? |

Thanks for your replies guys...
To answer that question, yes, this is something of an experament. The structure is infact enclosed in a larger one, and what you see here (so far) is simply the building interior. It will be (when complete) a full blow art gallery with works within it on display. Once that comes into play I may change my mind on those lights, but as far as ambient light goes, I like the effect that GI gives.
I haven't really worked on a serious piece since I managed to get my work up on the monthly contest gosh... a couple years ago I think? I figured since v_ray is around I may as well give it a test run and get back into modeling in the process :D |

Well it's great to have you back! The rendering looks good so far. I'll be watching this thread for updates. |

Looks good! Has a sense of solidity, that I often find comes with GI lighting (the shadows make everything seem very real and give it some mass and weight). Will be nice to see how it progresses.
Note that adding lights will not of course stop GI, instead those lights will be processed by GI also, their light bouncing around in a scene along with the environmental light here. Once you have pictures and things, some spotlights on those could be interesting - just keep intensities down if you want to ensure you don't wash out the base environment lighting you have here.
You could also use an image for the environment lighting, so that it's not even from all directions, which could suggest either a time of day (giving the lighting some directional quality), or structures and a world outside (other buildings, trees, etc).
Or not, of course :) It does look good as it is, just mentioning some things you might want to try while experimenting - if you don't like it here and don't use it, it still might be handy to know about and use in a later creation.
HTH!

Wooow... I hadn't realized its been THIS long lol! The links above are the two images I was talking about... Look at the dates! HOLLY COW DOOD!!! Ive been away waaay too long. Its nice to get back into it.
Once again, thanks for your comments guys, I really appreciate the feedback, and Tom.. I like those suggestions a lot. I will probably try out the image-lighting, that hadn't really crossed my mind and I think it would add a nice extra layer of depth to the render.
I have a couple days off work so I will probably be finishing this thing up within that time.

Very interesting. I like simpler scenes as well. I am a big fan of art galleries as well so I will be watching your progess with keen interest, unless it is modern art ;) |

Hey guys... just a quick update (textures)
I didnt have as much time as I wanted to work on this these past few days but I did manage to do this to it:
ps. Overlook the low quality render, for thats exactly what it is, needed something quick but decent. |

Wow! Looks great. Not sure I would categorize it as a low quality render but that's me :)
Maybe I should get V-ray...my kids can always go to Junior College :D |

Here it is... FIN!
I have been busy as busy gets as-late, so Ive gotten kinda lazy with it, but it turned out decent for what I originaly intended it to be... And thats about it- Yup! :D
(a few things I "could have done" but didn't)
Spot lights on the art. *i got lazy* -& I was shootin for an "after hours" feel
More floor pieces, with much more intricate form *lazy*
And I feel some of the textures could use a lil more TLC, but... *i'm lazy*

Looks great. Very well done. I may pick your brain on some of your techniques if you are okay with that... |

Very nice. My only crit is the podiums in the middle look super imposed. I'm guessing it's the material on them as it seems to have no 'substance'. |

feel free to ask me whatever you like :d
and ya know... i was thinking the same thing about that podium. I think the fact that I have no actual lights but simply highly luminate surfaces to give GI in the scene may have something to do with it? |

possibly. A bit of reflectance like on the floor may help, it's probably that the material is just too flat. |

No close up on the podiums to see, but beveling edges helps with realism and makes the render work to highlight that feature. |

the floor is reflective tho ;)
but I think you may be right... I might revisit this scene one more time soon, just to play around with some materials to see if they affect the podiums look.
...and im not quite sure what you mean about the beveling edges bit? Are you saying that they are beveled, or that I should bevel? Because I don't actualy have any beveled edges in this scene... even the edges of the pillars aren't actualy beveled but rather concaved by placing 3 different blocks with just a tad-bit of spacing between the conecting edges to give the illusion of a bevel in the final render:D |
