Interesting GnoWhey, that seems to point toward the hypothesis that in some cases it's a motherboard driver issue. Thanks for posting, hopefully that'll prove helpful to the users still having problems.

Well, the motherboard didn't change either, I just swapped out the CPU and added RAM. Went from a 32bit single core AMD to a 64 bit dual-core AMD. Still 32bit OS. I was suspecting an issue with certain AMD dual-core CPUs, personally.

Wow... I did some searches on problems with AMD Dual Cores and was amazed. I'd heard about the Phenom bug, but apparently there were all kinds of timing issues as well.
Here's a thread with a pretty good list of problems and solutions:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=983781
The thread is really old (2005) but might be relevant to some users as is noted in the thread that some issues were still relevant as late as 2008

Reading about the defective CPUs it looks like a lot of them got dumped on the home PC market with "software" fixes made available. Also there was an issue with AMD Dual Core and nVidia cards that was resolved via driver so definitely worth the time to do some research if you have an AMD CPU...

Uninstall all Truespace 7.6,then reinstall by clicking the right mouse button on the Truespace 7.6 installer then left click on Run as administrator.

That worked for me with Nvidia driver 177.35

I not sure about suspecting the cpu itself. Even though you installed a 32bit operating system on a 64bit cpu may have something to do with it.

Seeing some folks acknowledge that compatibility modes are resolving the situation is interesting as well. In theory, you should not require the compatibility mode. In my mind it is used to allow for differences in hardware and how it is accessed. I suspect the compatibility modes although helpful for resolution of may scenarios, does not directly address what the ... unique circumstances are with any given machine and its hardware.

For some updating drivers can resolve the scenario on their particular machine. For others, running as an administrator resolves the scenario (have to add in the whole security spectrum!).

I am not entirely certain that running in compatibility mode makes trueSpace run faster and more efficiently. It might be interesting to have a single scene which we could use to time different machines to render.

In the end, is good when folks can get trueSpace running on their machine. We are pushing a few envelopes with trueSpace7.6. It is great to have so many folks at least checking it out. Even better is a growing community here where we can iron out any scenarios that arise.

Hi there,

I'm new to the forum and I just wanted to post some comments about ts 7.6. As soon as I found out it was for free I decided to give it a try. Always wanted to, but never dedicated the time to do it. I just played around with some older trial versions but never really got into it. Now, I have the same problem as other users. ts 7.6 simply won't run at all. I've tried every possbible solution posted in the forum and nothing will make it work for me. I personally don't believe this is related to nvidia drivers as some people say. I'm using the latest ones (180.48) and I recently found an old trial version of truespace 6.5. For my surprise it works just fine. I can't say how well it does becasue I'm far away from being a true user of ts, but I do know that after clicking on the desktop icon it just started flawlessly. I'm not trying to criticize. On the contrary, I just want to find a solution to this problem too so I can at least give a try..

By the way, this are my system specs:

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 (x86)

Processor: AMD Opteron Denmark 175 x2 (2.2GHz)

3GB Ram

Video: EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512MB

Mainboard: MSI K8N Diamond Plus

(I'm using the latest drivers for everything, including the latest BIOS updates for my system)

Quick test to see if permissions is the issue: when you go to start trueSpace7.6, r-click the exe and "run as admin".
Let us know if it starts ok for you this way.

Well,

when I r-click on the executable itself in windows explorer and run as admin, the splash screen shows up, but nothing else happens. BUT when I do the same over the desktop icon, nothing happens at all. No splash screen or any sings of truespace launching...

There were some Nvidia users who found similar problem. I suggested they hold down the control-key on keyboard when they start trueSpace. This forces the Configure trueSpace dialog to appear. There is check-box for "use default config" at bottom. Try checking that and then hit ok. Let me know if trueSpace starts ok this way. Should only have to do this once I believe. If it works first time, it should fire up ok afterwards.

ps: check your task manager and ensure there are no ts7.exe's running.

Thanks for answering back Norm,

unfortunately for me that didn't work either. I can see the "ts7.exe" process in the task manager but there seems to be something wrong at some point since it stalls somehow. After I see the spalsh screen I can see some sort of window that appears in the taskbar which says "TitlePage". After a while it fades away but the splash screen just stays there and nothing else happens. I can also see that ts7.exe remains in the task manager but as I said, truespace does not launch at all...

Well is definitely a unique scenario.
Are you overclocking or any such scenario with your machine or graphics card?
You can try grabbing an older Nvidia driver and try it.
You can try booting into safe mode and try starting trueSpace from there (see if the graphics driver is the prob or not).

Mmmm,

Ok. I tried some older (169.25) drivers and still nothing. I do not like overclocking at all, so everything is set to factory defaults. Tried booting in safe mode and launching ts and still no go. This leads me to think it must be some hardware related issue. I guess I won't be able to do anything else, unless you have any other suggestions for me.

Thanks for replying trueBlue,

as Norm says my case is a truly unique scenario. When I launch truespace it gets to a point where it simply stalls. Those files you mention are never created in the ts folder. Even in safe mode something prevents it from launching. Maybe ts simply does not like my processor.

again unninstall TrueSpace 7.6, Reboot computer, goto to the Truespace 7.6 install icon, right mouse click on it and select Run as administrator. After it is installed all you should have to do is double click on icon, or select icon in menu, with no changes.

Make sure you run the install icon as administrator, not the Truespace program ,after it has been installed.

Try installing it on different partition. ex D:\truespace76
and maybe change security for D: drive to Full Control.

My Computer, right click on D: drive and select properties, click on security tab,Select the Group or user name that you are using and make sure that Full control has a check mark beside it.You can change it in edit or advanced.

I would suggest uninstalling it. Then, if that does not work, try redownloading it, as you may have had a bad download. Happens frequently to me. Hope this helps!

The trueSpace uninstall process does not remove all of the files. I always inspect the directory, save the files that I want somewhere else and delete the rest including all folders.

Do you just use the onboard graphics, rather than a separate graphics card? It may not quite be enough to run tS, hard to say when I look at the specs. It is DX9 compliant, but only up to PixelShader 2.0, so that would mean not DX9.0c I suspect. Still, I think it ought to run, though not necessarily perform at its best.

To try and get it to run, hold CTRL and SHIFT when you click on your icon to start tS. Check Use Default Configuration, this is the bit I'm not sure if you tried. I assume by all modes you mean Wireframe, DirectX and OpenGL for Real Time Mode.

When you say crashes, does it give an error message or report?

HTH!

Tom

I'm having this problem as well. I'm running a capable system Core 2 Duo 2.5Ghz, 4GB memory, GeForce 8400 GS. When I start TrueSpace it crashes at the splash screen. I tried holding down Ctrl and switching between all the options and nothing worked.

I am using Windows XP SP3 with ForceWare 179.48 (WHQL certified) video drivers.

Windows shows TrueSpace crashing with an exception in tsxapi.dll offset 002d5f2d.

OllyDbg points to the crash as an access violation when reading 00000640. I'm assuming this 640 as part of a resolution, which might hint at a logical error where a value is being pushed onto the stack by mistake, possibly while calling DeviceCaps or some similar method.

A little more digging has revealed the cause of this crash. Considering the information at hand, and a little detective work, it would appear that TrueSpace 7.6 is not enumerating the display modes properly.

Display modes are enumerated differently for Windows XP than they were on Windows 9x. This may cause issues for some applications when they attempt to list all of the supported display modes and store that information in a fixed-length buffer. This compatibility fix reduces the number of display modes reported to mimic the behavior of Windows 9x. Applies to: Windows 95, Windows 98

By evaluating the program through Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0 the problem is solved by applying the HideDisplayModes compatibility fix.

This is why for some users enabling Windows 95/98/Me (Windows 9x) compatibility mode fixes it for them.

I hope Caligari fixes this. I'm certain that they're losing many, many new users who are experiencing this crash.
