I broke an old scene out of the archives and gave it another shot.
Comments and criticisms encouraged.

Nice, spacekdet!
I like how the sky is a dark/rich blue toward the bottom, helping to set the foreground apart from it. |

Lookin' good Spacey!
I always find getting the rock textures to look convincing can be a big challenge - you've done well here. I'd like to suggest perhaps another texture layer for debris and/or small vegetation just to add a sense of scale. It's not immediately clear if that's a big tree or a smallish shrubby bush.
Overall it looks a little ...clean?
Lovely colours though and I found your reference photos quite fascinating. I hope you are gonna work this one a little more. |

Nice image, is it meant to be rendered at night with the rocks reflecting the shine of the moon, or am I going colour-blind? :( |

Nope, not intended to be a night shot, but art is all about interpretation, so if you want to see it as being moonlight, go for it!
I'd agree about the tree; it's the weakest part of the image. I'm still thinking on how to make it better- not crazy about actually modeling it but I think I'll end up doing just that. It's way too bushy right now- and is constructed with the age-old method of a boatload of alpha-mapped planes using an image of the 'Chapel Pine'.
The actual tree is a wind sculpted white pine of fairly large size, and it's roots stretch across to the adjacent cliff where a stone arch once was.
I've located some better reference photos on Flikr and may end up remodeling the main rock formation. It's a fairly complex sandstone structure and it's hard to wrap my mind around how to best model it accurately. Right now parts of it are nurbs and parts are SDS, and it's mostly 'all wrong'. |

not being able to see the ground gives it a sense of floating... its actually surrounded by water or has a body of water nearby? |

It's located on the shore of Lake Superior (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Superior).
Fresh water as far as you can see, all the way to the horizon.
The only way to get to Chapel Rock is by boat or on foot; about a 4.5 mile hike. It's adjacent to a sugar sand beach and the outlet of a river.
It's one of the jewels of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pictured_Rocks_National_Lakeshore)
More photos of the surroundings can be located in the Flikr photostreams
