Making a portion of a mesh invisible:
Does anyone know if this is possible in v 7?
This feature was not available in previous versions, only an entire object could be made invisible.
Thanks, Dude |

is anyone here ever tried to make a portion of your model's mesh invisible? Or you just don't model that way?
Thanks, Dude. |

check this out it was done with tS 6.6
but I find it annoying not to be able to make portions of the mesh invisible.
Thanks, Dude |

I would suggest that mesh itself is invisible to begin with. The only thing you see is texture on mesh once texture is applied. Therefore one would have to texture map that portion of the "mesh" you wish to be invisible, with alpha mask or such.
The other alternate approach would be to use the .psd format and separate the portion of "mesh" you wish to alter as invisible, as a separate object. You could then post process to your heart's content, adjust visibility of layers in PhotoShop for instance. The .psd format is included in trueSpace7, however for trueSpace6.6, the iPak is required to access this export format.
Hope this is informative. |

when you model the entire mesh is visible front and back, in other programs, you can select a portion of the map and hide it temporarely, so you can go on and model a particular portion of the mesh without the interference of the rest of it. This is not a texture/rendering issue, but a modeling issue.
As far as I know tS does not have this capability, if it does I would love to know about it.
Thanks,

Maybe this will help. Try flipping all the faces of the model. Then you will be essentially working on the inside of the model and you will be able to click through items that are on the outside. After you finish flip the faces back. |

the feature DUDE is talking about is a feature i saw in MODO , if you hit on the key H you hide all the selected polygons temporarely until you hit U to unhide them....helpful feature to concentrate on small areas in complex models... |

Dude, if you are just trying to hide certain portions of the model to get them out of the way you can assign Layers to all of the different components and turn off the layers you don't want to see.
My previous suggestion about flipping the faces allows you to work "inside" a model. This works by effectively making the exterior of the mesh transparent to your mouse clicks and anything on the interior is selectable. This allows you to work from the inside out. This can sometimes make working on complex objects easier. |

ok thanks I understand that, but it will work only if a model is made out of components, not if it is seamless. I have tried to select parts of the model and copy and paste them to differts layers, but it does not seem to work.
Anyway thanks for your suggestion. |

Right. Zbrush has a similar feature (masking) too. Handy for objects and portions with high poly count. |
