Vray: the outside, shadows, caustics [or whatever] are very nice. I'm not so sure about the frosted interior though.

Nice renders, V-ray one is a bit to white as mentioned but good overall, I have never been that successful with Virtualight. Nice one. |

great modeling. comments below.
- the glass looks good but looks like it was placed in the freezer and has frost collected on it. use caustics and virtual light, no need for vray. People tend to use v-ray just for looks but that can work against you sometimes. |

The VRay glass is frosty mainly because it's reflecting the background colour but also because it's done in the unfinished implementation of VRay which is blowing out high combinations of reflection and refraction at the moment. As a render it was just a feasibility test.
Virtualight is OK but it's harder to avoid speckled caustics and getting decent soft shadows is tough. |

Definitely like the V-Ray caustics.
Thanks much for the ViruaLight render! They have been rather scarse. Been looking forward to seeing a few.

It's hard to compare an apple to an orange; Why not the same object for each render so a true comparison could be made? ;) |

I'll try and do the same scene in both engines when I get time. The two images were actually rendered quite some time apart. |

I have just started to play with caustics and have had no luck with either Vray or Virtualight. I am using a torus with glass applied and VRay settings of:
-Caustics Enabled
-Photons=1000
-factor=1.00
-distance=0.05
The Vray seems a bit more straight forward to me (only 4 settings) so I would like to get advice with Vray first. I have tried various settings but DONT SEE ANY CAUSTICS :confused: .Do I play more with VRAY, reflectance shaders, lights...? Does Vray GI need to be enabled ( I also tried that and it did not work). Any help would be appreciated. |

Have you checked the default settings of the torus example in the Vray scenes folder? That worked for me...;) |

Splinters thanks for the advice, my confusion is now lifted :jumpy: . The torus example helped much. It is funny how the manual states that the "factor" setting can be left at "1" but it is 200 in the torus example and that made all the difference. I also found the "ring" scene in the scene library which is a demonstration of vray caustics. The factor setting for that scene worked fine at a value of "1"!?. I will need to investigate each seen to figure out why the ring scene was able to produce caustics at a factor value of 1 but the torus needed a value of 200. If you (or any one else) can shed some "specular reflection" (a little light humor ;) ) it would be appreciated. |
