You might recognise this fella from the Caligari Home page (bottom right)
Decided to go the comic book route with this book project and I have changed characters to cell shaded while leaving the backgrounds fully rendered. I think it works OK-any suggestions? |

The cartoon effect of the whole image looks great. What happened to the spray of the paint coming out of the can, or is that just my monitor??
Apart from that like it, nice render. :D (as usual) |

Just tweaked in TS7 today. Nothing that TS6 couldn't handle though.:) |

Works ok, I'd lighten the outlines somewhat(maybe even colorize them) and maybe try a sublte diffusion map for added minor texture. |

Thanks for comments guys.
Chrono, I was purposefully going for that manga style black outline, especially to put a bold edge against the CGi background but I will try your idea...:)
Could you explain the diffusion map suggestion please? |

I'm not saying that you should remove the black outline just lessen it. Merely a suggestion, because it may become wrong somehow. *shrugs*
On the duffusion map. Add another layer to the shader over the toon shader(or under it, mess around with it some because the effects are slightly different either way, the same apply's for the Reflectance Blend) allowing total transparency for the color & bumps. Now use the mapped phong reflectance shader and LMC the diffuse channel, RMC and apply whatever map you plan to use. You can do the same for any of the other channels but that's over kill. Just adding a light diffusion map will add some depth, but won't show up on the shadowed area of the toon shader. At least it didn't for me. Anyways you have hugh amounts of control over the effect because of it's layered nature.
Here's an example of what I got with UV Toon:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/chrono2005/cellshadertest2.jpg
*note: the rear 2 spheres have diffuse, shine, & specular channels loaded and the foreground one has only its shine channel loaded*
I found this out after I experimented with getting the same effect as the Shirow Project has over at CGTalk. |

Love the image.
What is 'cell shaded'? Is it a render setting in TS7 or a plug-in?

Cell-shaded refers to the effect in animation where the animation cell is coloured in by hand like traditional animations (don't shoot me if that is not technically correct). Simply put-it makes your 3D model look like it was a 2D drawn image.
it can by done by either using a 'toon' shader on the reflectance channel in the material editor or by using a plug in but I prefer the reflectance option...:) |

Neat image, however, one thing I don't care for is what appears to be the dudes' nose shadowed on the wall.. |

Nice render:D (of course I have to say that, or he'll challenge me to an arm wrestle again)
However, is the face not meant to be toon shaded, because it doesnt look like it is to me? |

toon shader on every object except background-just doesn't show up as well on his face---will investigate though. |

Is the toon shader a plugin reflectance map, or some strange(er) part of truespace that I have not yet explored? :o |

Splinters, How do you stop your rendered scene from disappearing after rendering when using the toon shader. i.e i paint an object render it and as soon as it has finished the render it just goes back to how it was before I started rendering.....  |

Do you mean it goes back to wireframe or player view? |

Bit of a quirk of TS7 I'm afraid. It happens to me too-usually after moving the mouse afer the render has finished though, so..... |

Yeah, that going back to wireframe is not a good "feature" that has been going on in tS in versions prior to tS7! I kind of got used to it, but while playing with another 3d program I own, I noticed that it would cache the render so all I had to do when I wanted to see what I rendered previously was click the "render" button and it would show me the cache version "immediately" (that is what cache is for) and give me the option to re-render new version if I wanted it too. Just think you have some three hour render that immediately "disappears" when you move your mouse. It would be a nice feature to cache the render. |

I think what happens is that the 3d controls get activated when the cursor is moved in the 3d "portion." I don't know about 7, but in 6 if you put the cursor over the toolbar or turn off the direct3d/ogl mode it doesn't usually clear the screen like that.
I think.
I could be wrong though. |

I use this great plugin by Alexander Shyrokov called SJ Auto Render Save
which can be found here.
http://freetsx.sourceforge.net/sj.html#arender
this allows for a screen render to be saved to a file as well. |
