I copied the jpg to my TS/texture/ folder but it would not show in the list, even after quitting TS. Is there a limit on how many files can be saved in that directory? Maybe I have exceeded the limit and thats why it doesn;t show up.

Right click on bitmap library, a small window will popup, select import , load the jpg file you want to put on bitmap library.

Thanks, That's the easy way to add a material image as then you can just browse to any folder needed instead of trying to copy images into TS folders.:)

Hey Johny, got this to work at last!

I tried it on my desktop (rather than laptop) and success - many thanks for your assistance

I would like to ask though that with the Diffuse Strength set at 1.0, I had a white halo around the image

When i reduced this to zero, the white dissapeared and left me with what i am after (ust the black railings)

Perhaps i am understamding this wrong, but would of thought it would have been the other way round?

Anyway, making good progress and thanks to all who have assisted so far with this

Would also like to point out that i dont mind reading the manuals at all but i dont recall anywhere that covers transparancy in this way (Im sure i must of missed this)?

Do you know of any chapters in the manuals that may cover this subject in depth?

Regards, J

Hi Johny, anyone who can help!

I managed to get a result with the alpha images for the railings while in the Workspace area, but when i went into model it has lost the transparancy!?

The reason i need the model side is beacuse i need to export the model as 3ds format

Is there anyway i can preserve the transparancy in model side or be able to export to 3ds from workspace?

Kind regards,

J

Ok Jofan, now you need 3 file for this work:
1. a 32 bit image with color and alpha data in one file. Said it JOFAN_32BIT. (use on Model side)
2. a 24 bit color data image. Said it JOFAN_COLOR (use on workspace side)
3. a 24 bit alpha data image. Said it JOFAN_ALPHA (use on workspace side).

This is because ME on workspace side is different with ME from Model side.

Now here the steps:
1. After apply workspace material as shown on early attached video. <edit>You can skip this step number #1 because if you apply material on Model side, later you can get same material on workspace side. Look like material transfer from model side to workspace side work better than from workspace side to model side</edit>
2. Click 'Model' tab to switch to Model view. On Model View click 'Material Editor' icon for open LW/Model view ME panel.
3. Right Click on center of opened ME panel then select 'Reset all' for reset current material.
4. Can you see 4 very small icon on top of ME panel? Click on first icon (its color icon).
5. After you click on small color icon, a color panel is open beside ME panel. Right click on Color panel -> a Color shader window is open.
6. Select 'Texture map' shader from Color Shader window. (a icon with Caligari logo). -> Color panel now draw this a texture image.
7. Right click on 'Color' panel for open file JOFAN_32BIT. You'll see Color panel now draw with JOFAN_32BIT image.
8. Click an hold small icon on top of Color panel. then select 'Transparent Map'. -> a transparant panel will open below the color panel.
9. Right click on 'transparency' panel for open file JOFAN_32BIT. You'll see Color panel now draw with JOFAN_32BIT image and ME panel draw with transparent material.
10. Select a object you want to apply this material. Then apply this material to your selected object.
11. Finished! now you can export you object to a 3ds file. :)

Jofan, we need to reMaterial all object on Model View. Because workSpace'ME is disfferent with Model view's ME. Workspace ME is for RT and ModelView ME is for LW.

HTH!

PS: not forget to put file JOFAN_32BIT in same folder with your 3ds file.

Hi Johny,

Once again thanks for the help on this

I didnt get much time to try this last night however did hit the following problem:

I use Photoshop for my image creation etc

The only options i have seen so far to produce a 32 bit image is in dds format (using nvidia plugin)

I dont appear to get any options to save as 32 /24 bit etc for other formats?

So i tried the dds format but it appear truespace model side does not recognise this format for a transparency map?

May i ask if there is anyway to check / change the bit type for a png image?

I have attached my original railing texture in png format:

16018

Sorry to be a pain, but hope you could advise further

J

Sorry, I can not give help about photoshop, I dont have photoshop. Maybe other with photoshop can give some advise.

But if you you apply Materials to an object on Model side with above 32 bit png file, later when you switch to workspace side, you must find that your obj also transparent on workspace side. So forget about both 24 bit image file. forget about above step number #1. Just start from steps number #2.
