It was very close this time around. I changed my vote a few times before finally settling on Nez's. I didn't like that the plane's materials seem to have too much ambient setting, but it was the work on the hanger and the extra work put into textures that finally decided it for me.
James, I think this was your best work in the MMC and you are definitely improving. Yours was one of the others that I considered voting for. My advice would be to spent a bit more time on geometry details, to give the objects more realism. You do a very good job with your textures, but a lot of times the models are too simple to carry it off. Sometimes even something as simple as beveling the edges will make a considerable difference in the look, because it allows the edge of the objects to catch specular highlights. |

Well, I withdrew from the competition and removed the images.
It was cartoon, so I wasn't exactly looking for realism. Guess there is no place for that kind of thing here on this forum. Lessons learned - don't enter pigs in a horse race. |

Please no one respond to JameMc actions. It is better to continue with the voting and let him decide his own actions.
If you want to come back James your more then welcome. |

James what the heck? You have 3 votes. I don't nor does kena have any votes and you don't see us whinning. It is just for fun. I have only won 1 of these things back in Sept..and to be honest I though Nez should have won that one. Be glad people like your flying lemon enough to vote 3 times. |

Looking at the number of votes we have so far I can't imagine trueSpace only has 13 Customers!
A lot of looking but no voting. Come on everyone join in the fun and vote! There is a Winnebago deserving some votes and Kena deserves more than one just for the idea alone!
Heck they all deserve more! |

I think the forums are always slow around the holidays. But they seem really slow lately even for the holidays. :( |

Well I can only speak personally, but I'm only just back onto a computer after a manic four day holiday weekend - and I'm sure I'm not the only Brit this applies to - I know we're not the most important nation to some, but we make up a moderate proportion of the forum at least! ;)
I'm fairly sure that if the poll remains open a few more days (didn't check the date) we ought to say a fair few more votes to come.
I certainly think it's early to make strong comments about clear winners or withdrawls or anything like that - whilst I thank everyone who's voted for me so far, I have an excellent track record of being in the lead only temporarily and losing by the end!
So please carry on voting...
Regarding the 'cartoon' issue on Jamesmc's piece - I don't believe this forum has a particulalr prejudice against this kind of work - we only need to see that Steinie won on a previous occasion, or the huge popularity of Splinters' work, or WickedWitch's clay projects to see that's not the case.
I think the Lemon glider etc were fantastic collection of inspired work Jamesmc, and a worthy winner. To my mind, the biggest 'weakness' was the difficulty in selecting a single image to suitably represent all your work for a final 'submission' (given that the challenge requires a single image) but I think most would view your creation in its entirety from the WIP thread, which would be the best way to see it.
Jack - thanks for the comments - could you explain what you mean by the ambient levels of the materials - I'm sufficiently 'untrained' that I'm not sure what that means in terms of using the material editor in TS5 (which doesn't have a setting labelled ambient) I have luminance and diffusion - is it one of those you felt needed to be turned down? |

You're certainly welcome Nez. :)
Yup, luminance would be the one. Generally it should be zero unless the object gives off light. ;) |

OK, thanks Jack, that's a useful tip... I've just checked and TS seems to default to a value of 0.1 generally for luminance, so I expect most of my materials use a similar value as I don't often adjust this I think... When I get some time, I might try to go through it all and re-do all the textures and see if it makes much difference. I'll try to remember the tip for future work. :D |

I think a lot of times luminance is used as a "cheat" instead of doing a more detailed lighting setup. The problem is that without GI like in VRay you don't get the benefit of bounced light. You could try Radiosity, which is Lightworks GI equivalent.
Also don't be afraid to have dark areas in your scene. It's better to have a full tonal range of darks and lights with good contrast. That'll give your images more dynamic range and visual punch. |

Question Jack. You said that LW GI is radiosity. So if I turn on GI and render with radiosity..I am not truly getting GI? Normally I turn on GI and load a HDRI image and adjust a few settings then hit render..is that not correct? |

I think your process is fine (as far as I know) - but I'm using TS5.1, which doesn't have the newer GI tools. Radiosity is available as the closest equivalent in TS5, but it's not totally the same (doesn't use HDRI for a start) - and I've never had a great deal of luck with getting it to look vaguely sensible... so I tend to use non-radiosity solutions like image based lights.
I'd like to try out the GI features of TS6.6 or maybe Dribble (or even VRay) but cash restricts the former and I can't install a copy of 3Delight so I can't try Dribble as yet. |

Hi RJeff, maybe I'm confused, but I don't see a GI option for Lightworks? If you mean setting GI for VRay, that shouldn't affect Lightworks settings or results any... |

Isn't the GI in the light set up the GI you are refering to? |

RJeff do you mean global envirionment? (HDRI?) That's not the same as VRay's Global Illumination. Though if you combine the Lightworks global envirionment HDRI with radiosity you could in theory achieve a similar effect. |

yes..it says GI ..so I just assume it was global illumination. |

The Lightworks and VRay settings are separate panels, here's an annotated screen grab showing them:
11720
Hope that helps! :)
Also it's worth pointing out that clicking the render icon on the bottom toolbar *always* uses VRay. While the render icon in Modeler can be either VRay or Lightworks depending on the Photorender panel setting. (Photorender panel is not shown) |

weeeeellllll... if you look at this month's winning animation, I think it was done on the workspace side using real-time shaders. so you are not totally barred from workspace.
I've done a couple of real-time pictures myself.
I tend to use Workspace for v-ray and real-time texturing after I've built in modeler. If I'm doing LightWorks, then I just stay in modeler. Except for my current project where I switch to Workspace to fold my rag. |

No problem :)
The main difference between the two is that GI calculates light bounces, where as the Global Environment is an array of colored lights that mimic the image, but no light bounces.
The light bounces and color bleed effect are what make VRay so powerful. It makes light set up very simple because you can just put 3D lights where the light sources are in your scene and it'll calculate the light bounces producing a nice relatively accurate result. Where as without light bouncing you have to add lights to simulate the bounced light of other lights. |

This Poll ends today so get in your votes.
Will the "Curse of Nez" be broken?...stay tuned.
I would like to thank all the entries and their cool ideas and great renderings. Cream rises to the top and Nez came through with flying colors.
I leave the next challenge in capable hands. What's it going to be Nez?...:) |
