August Monthly Modeling Challenge -- Topic: Space

Here goes the launch of a new modeling challenge. :D

The idea is to have a challenge that is geared more towards the complete 3D development cycle from concept through modeling, surfacing, lighting, rendering, and post process. This is a chance for TSer's to really show there stuff and help motivate the production of portfolio quality images.

The contest will have a 3 week deadline with the week following used for voting. Winner will select the next month's topic and run that month's challenge just like we're doing in the SMC challenges. It's up to the community to participate and keep the challenge going.

I've come up with some basic rules:

1.) Submission expresses the topic. If topic is an object, then it must include at least one instance of the object which should be the focus of the image.
2.) Use your own work. No pre-made purchased or free models, please.
3.) Start a Work In Progress thread for your submission.
4.) Submission should be one 800x600 image and a link to your WIP thread.
5.) Indicate tools used to create your submission. TS should be the primary application used to create the image. Post Processing in a paint program is ok.

It's important that everyone who's planning to enter start a WIP thread. With difficult challenges like this many entries are over ambitious and don't make it to completion so in many cases it may be likely that judging will have to take place on the WIPs. ;)

Feel free to post comments and links to WIP threads here in this thread instead of a separate comments thread. I will maintain a list of WIP links here at the top of the thread.

I want to start it out with a broad topic, so...
This month's topic is: Space
Deadline is: Wednesday, August 22nd at 11:00PM EST

Good luck!!

First the Speed Modeling Contest still exist and we should still enter and support it.
Second I like this Challenge for a couple reasons. Having a WIP thread is a great idea to show newcomers how its done. Your start time is perfect so that the entries can be submitted in time for the Caligari Contest also.
Is "Space" open to interpretation or do you mean Outer Space?

Open to any interpretation you like Steinie :)

I think it'll be cool to see what people make of it. I know when I start my WIP thread tomorrow (hopefully) that I'm going to have to do some kind of concept sketch first before even starting to model anything.

And I whole heartedly agree about supporting the SMC! If this contest format works out as well as the SMC has hopefully we'll be able to have two different themes going to inspire people to do artwork and practice their modeling. I think it'll also alleviate the issue where some feel that too much of the judging for the SMC is focusing too much on final render quality. We'll have this challenge focusing on a final image and the other challenge focusing on modeling. If we can get more people participating through this slower paced challenge then hopefully they'll gain confidence and also to try the SMC as well. ;)

Superb Idea! I like it and it will hopefully also stimulate more activity in the WIP forum!

Although I've entered the SMC a few times I find I prefer to take a leisurely approach to what I'm doing - I have a natural aversion toward rushing any creative process - so a less time-driven challenge holds greater interest for me. You can probably count me in.

I'm no expert with trueSpace and I generally don't have much time to work on 3D art but this challenge is an incentive for me to finish up a model I've been trying to build for several years. Maybe I can get some help and learn more about using trueSpace in the process. I'll start a Wip thread on what I've done thus far.

Welcome to the challenge Micheal! :D

I had some things come up last week and this weekend. My sister has a guy friend visiting from England and looks like they're pretty serious. I heard noise about a possible wedding sometime this year... Anycase I was drafted to do some remodeling work around my parents house... LOL. Should be able to get my project going later in earnest the week.

Looks like you're off to a great start on a very cool entry. :) I'm hoping we'll get more entries as people get more confidence about posting.

Just a reminder that the contest deadline is tomorrow: August 22nd

Unless you guys need me to extend it a month and there's other people who want to get in, I'm going to go ahead and close it for voting tomorrow so the winner can get us started on a new topic.

Ok I'm going to go ahead and close this out. I'm going to go ahead and put everyone up on the poll, but try and get an image of where you're at in the next day or two so I can link it for the voting.
