nice topic Breech - this is one that's been suggested for a while but never taken up.
With your own picture - I know it's a slightly daft suggestion, but have you double-checked that it's actually got an image selected for the hdri light? I've found that when using hdri, if you close the scene and re-open it's forgotten which image you're using, so if you are only using hdri lighting, you will get a black scene... if you reselect the image, it remembers th eother settings, but doesn't automatically retrieve the image... a real nuisance if you've not kept a note of which image you were using too...
if that's not it, feel free to email me the scene and I'll have a look for any other obvious problems... |

Thanks Georg, thanks Nez. Thanks also for offering to help me sort out my render issue Nez. I have it sorted now and am embarassed to say it was just finger trouble. Somehow, I managed to type 0 instead of 10 in to the HDRI Sample field. :o
Worse thing is, I spent ages last night trying to figure out what the problem was and was trying all sorts of weird soloutions before finaly giving up. Yet today, as soon as I loaded the scene, I instantly saw what the problem was. Think I'll stick to rendering during the day instead of late at night. :D
A big thanks also to James who, as always, has managed to post an entry in before the virtual ink on my SMC thread has even had a chance to dry. |

Nice one nigec. Mmm, a box of Swan Vesta matches, now that brings back a lot of childhood memories. :D
Nice trophy Nez, love the cherry wood base. I know you said it was an original design but I can't help but feel it is familiar somehow.
Anyhows, great effort guys and thanks for your support. |

I'll try for another one, I was working on something but I ran out of time, and it rendered aweful, so I'll have a rethink |

I've been sitting around BUT trying for another trophy model :P
I've managed the best invisible trophy :D
8 hours into it and here you can see a stunning image of nothingness
seriously I thought I'd have a go at a simple character, face, eyes etc as its something I'm really bad at, my year old computer decides I should stick to building walls and flashed up the low memory warning and promply throw a dicky fit, tried 7.6 and it did its usual "nah, you love 6.6 more" and had a nervous breakdown.. so I sparked up ole trusty the hamster powered 2.3 and managed to do the mouth, nose then ...... "Truespace detects you have a better computer, bugger off! I ain't gonna let you save either :p !"
arrghhhh!! |

Mmmm, might just join in with you there nigec as I need all the practice I can get on charter modeling. It's something I just can't seem to get my head around.
I like your new entry BTW. I know you had a lot of problems but I think the end result is pretty awesome. Congrats and thanks for your support. |

Thanks ;)
I think Vista updated the graphics drivers the other day so maybe thats why TS is playing up, if it had been my usual stuff I would of thrown the towel in very quickly, but it was something new and i quite enjoyed the challenge ;)
do you wanna borrow my PC BB? you'll have many hours of fun! |

It's not the water I'm worried about. It's all the dorsal fins I can see swimming around in it that worry me. :D |

Try hitting your thumb with a hammer.
The second time is definitely harder. |

Wut?
You just get that maniacal look on your face, let loose with a guttural scream and let 'er loose!
If that doesn't work, use the gonad-biting dog as a choice motivator.
Works for me! |

Well, there you go Steinie, a character/figure based entry just for you. Not even close to the great characters you create, but not bad by my standards if you remember my pretty lame Wallace in a previous SMC. |

Agreed - you've made your fencer figure look deceptively easy Breech, very nice job.
And well done Nigec for persevering with all your hardware/software woes - an excellent egg-based entry.... plus you've really gotthe Kerky bug :D
I like Steine's a lot too, great variety in the models as usual...
Nice trophy Nez, love the cherry wood base. I know you said it was an original design but I can't help but feel it is familiar somehow.
Well I guess there's a strong case for saying it's difficult to do anything truly original these days - it's almost always going to be slightly derivative of something as 'inspiration' is going to come from an amalgamation of ideas from things already observed I suppose... All I meant was that I didn't directly base it on any object (or trophy) that I recall seeing. I had a vague concept in my head for a technique and just started with a shape and followed the technique to get a form approaching what I had in mind, with no specific reference. The overall profile (wide base, taper towards the top before flaring out) is a fairly simple shape used all over the place (including in a couple of buildings I made for the Monument MMC) and the skeletal look isn't exactly novel - see the Beijing stadium for one example. So I suppose it's just a fusion of several fairly basic concepts, not exactly 'original' for sure:D.
Hope that makes sense... |

Thanks for all the comments guys. Strangly, I got a lot more satisfaction out of that project than I did my Matrix Phone. Go figure.
...do you wanna borrow my PC BB? you'll have many hours of fun!
Lol, let me think about that for a microsecond. Err...no thanks. I had no end of problems when I initially installed Vista. Out-Of-Memory errors (I've got 4 gigs for crikes sake), BSDs, random crashes the whole 9 yards. Anyhow, to cut a long (and painfull) story short, this went on for about 8 months until I discovered that one of the 2 brand new hard drives I bought for my RAID config was dodgy. Replaced it and not a single glitch since. In fact Vista runs smooth as silk and is lightning fast. I'm quite impressed and would never go back to XP.
Ref your trophy Nez, just in case anybody has misinterpreted my meaning. I didn't mean what I said in a bad way. It's just I had the strangest feeling I had seen it somewhere before. Finally, the old grey matter clicked in and I realised that I was confusing it with the image below that I had downloaded as one of the possible images for the montage I put up with the SMC brief. Old age, it's a killer y'know. Gotta say though Nez, yours looks way, way better.
Gotta agree with all the other comments and say I'm very impressed with the sheer variety of work. Gonna be an intresting vote that's for sure. Good luck all. |
