SMC #44 – Trophy

The Brief

For simplicity, this SMC has been titled Trophy. However, in this instance, Trophy also includes awards, medals, in fact any object you would present to someone in recognition of an achievement. The image below shows a few examples such as an Oscar, the FIFA World Cup, the F1 Championship Trophy as well as an Olympic Medal, the Schneider Trophy and a few of the more common variety of sports trophies you might win at a local sports event. Your model could be based on any of these ideas or you could come up with something completely different. A few ideas to get you started are: an award for the Best Mum or Greatest Dad, an award for winning the SMC/MMC that people could put in their Avatars or Sigs. An achievement award you could gain for progressing to a certain level of a game such as COD 4 or WOW. It could be an award for a scholastic achievement or just something that is plain funny, the choice is entirely yours.

Anyhow, there you have it. A bit simplistic perhaps, but deliberately so in order to try and encourage some newcomers to try their hand or appeal to some old the old hats who seem more pressed for time these days.

I hope this small brief has given you a few ideas, good luck all – and most importantly, have fun.

New Users - Don't be put off entering if you are fairly new to trueSpace as it is not always the best model that wins. Voters can often be swayed by a clever or unique design.

The Competition

Overview

The competition is open to all forum users - the idea being to have an ongoing challenge that is geared to improving the general modelling skills of the tS community. Submissions must have been specifically created for entry into this competition and be the authors own work. TrueSpace must be used as the modelling software with no restrictions placed on which version can and should be used.

The Rules

1. You must create and complete model within the 2 hour time limit.

2. There are no time restrictions on how long you can take to texture your model, arrange and light your scene etc.

3. There are no restrictions placed on either the render engine you can use or the time it takes to render an image.

4. There are no restrictions on the amount of differing entries you can submit.

5. Each entry is restricted to one image no larger than 800x600 pixels plus one additional wireframe image (before subdivision) also no larger than 800x600 pixels.

6. Each entry should have a unique title and specify the modelling time, render engine, render time and version of trueSpace used.

7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial of how they made their winning design in the new trueSpace Tutorium (Contact Norm for details).

8. All entries should be posted to this thread and all comments should be posted in the comments thread.

Timelines

Entry Deadline: Monday 6th April 1200 GMT.

Poll Starts: Monday 6th April at 23:59 GMT.

Poll Duration: 7 Days.

Well, leading by example as they say, here is my entry for SMC #44:

It looked a lot better when I had it lit using HDRI but come time for the final image, tS just kept rendering black screens. Will post an updated image if I manage to sort it out.

Edit - HDRI render now sorted. It was just a finger problem by me and not an error by tS.

Well I do like to enter as many of these as I can, even if I don't really have enough time...

So here is my abstract trophy (perhaps it was for basket weaving or something...!) - not based on anythingin particular.

Modelling - tS7.6 model-side

Just took a simple shape, extruded it into a strange twist, repositioned it's axis, copied a few times to make a ring of twisty shapes, copied the ring a few times and adjutsed scale, made a quick base using the lathe tool and subdivided away...

Textures/lighting - pretty basic, basic wood shader for base (cherry colour) with very slight bump and some reflectance, shiny relfective material for metal, and a basic hdri for lighting... that's it...

Modelling, texturing and lighting in 30mins - render took nearly that long again due to AA, SDS and HDRI (acronym city!) If I'd had a bit longer I might have tried for something a bit more interesting but shows you can sometimes do something even in half a lunch break...

DizzyAGE Easter contest award

DizzyAGE is a game engine and the guys run a contest every year, so seeing as the topic here is trophies, I'd did one :)

It was a nightmare, dogged by system problems, electric tripping out and me forgetting to save often.. so what we have is the 6th egg shape , the second set of limbs, and the 1st plateform which is somewhere in the 2 hr range, could be over

TS 6,6

Kerkythea on high render .3AA.. leccie went off on the fine one)

I need a lie down my head is battered lol

FINALLY! Got my PC sorted out, they couldn't fix the problem though so I basically replaced parts of it bit by bit until the thing was just about upgraded! Only bit that is still old is the case and the PSU! Not complaining though, since I've been threatening to upgrade for YEARS (felt like it)...

Now have an AMD Athlon duel core 2.5 GHz with 4GB DDR2 800 RAM and 160GB SATA HD... together with the ATI Radeon HD 4650, trueSpace is FLYING through the renders and things like FLARES, DOF and such is MUCH faster... of course not the best rig but works well :)

Anyhoots, here is my first entry, got another one lined up and who knows, perhaps a 3rd :D

... Sniper of the year ...

Here is another one... Cheff Supreme!

Had some time left of my 2 hrs (only used about 1.0-1.5) so I added a few bits according to my personal art critic advice (wife and daughters ;)

A little serving cloth over the edge... tweaked the wood base... changed the pot color to a more copper shade... added some creases to the cheff's hat...
