Well, first off, sorry for taking so long to get organised... wasn't expecting to win the last one with some great entries from other folks and have been rather caught up with lots of other things over the last few day.
So the new topic is: Latin (or 'world') percussion...
We did a musical instruments challenge way back in August 2007 (smc #17 if you must know...) which was good fun and as a muso I like the opportunity of a bit more....
To clarify (and give you some ideas of what to consider) -
NOT drum kits or parts thereof - i.e cymbals, bass drums, snare drums, toms etc
NOT traditional orchestral percussion such as xylophones, kettle drums/timpani, triangles etc
YES to common latin percussion instruments such as: congas, bongos, timbales, cowbells, agogos, guiros, cabasa, claves, jam-blocks, wood-blocks, cuica, maracas, tambourine, afuche, cajon, etc...
YES to other 'ethnic' or 'world' percussion such as: castanets, tablas, gamelan, djembes, udu drums, etc....
- in other words - lots to choose from!
Standard rules:
1. Create the model(s) within the 2 hours time limit.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one rendered image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough (although no-one ever seems to bother...)
8. All entries should be posted to this thread and all comments should be posted in the comments thread. Thanks.
As I'm a bit slow getting going, you've got until Mon 23rd Feb (12 noon by GMT) which gives you two weekends as well as the whole of next week - hopefully that gives you plenty of time to enter more than once!:D |

My entry is not very Latin, it is a modern rock tambourine, but at least it is a tambourine :D.

Just to make sure I support my own challenge  here's one I knocked up quickly - won't be put up for the vote.
Object = Cabassa
Model time - under an hour (about 45mins but was texturing as I went so it's round about that time).
Model-side on 7.6 - used the radial array tool for the 'beads' (first time, very nice), torus tool for the 'wires' and lathed polys for the remaining parts. Due to the frankly obscene poly count on the beads (didn't bother hiding those round the back, which was lazy) I also used layers for the first time ever to make working the scene a bit easier. No SDS. So 2 new tools this time round :D
EDIT - doh! realised I left out all the intermediate 'wires' and only kept the top and bottom ones... would have taken 1 minute to add them in... if I can be bothered, I'll update the final render to include them, but it's not a high priority as it's not going in the vote anyway...
Textures are just basic in LW, lighting with in-built HDRI image.
Render took a little while due to the poly count, AA settings - maybe 15-20mins while I was doing other stuff, so didn't see exactly.... |
