Wow! There's some pretty terrific entries for the SMC this time round - well done all. I think organics is waaaay out of my modeling comfort zone so I think I'll be giving this one a miss. Best of luck in the voting all.

Well if organics aren't up your street (I know they're not up mine yet!) then knock up another mechanical marvel as a sparring partner for me and Nigec! I know that is up your street after the SMC a few weeks back...

Burnart - I've not looked at tha animation yet as I'm not supposed to download any sizeable attachments here at the office (or the IT police get grumpy) but that last model in particular is very impressive - any chance you could provide some closer screen shots of your wire to help out the budding organic modellers? It's prettty clear that your efforts have been put together to help folks and from my limited experience it looks like you've produced a very clean and tidy mesh there that folks could probably learn from. Many - like me - are intimidated by organic modelling (even with Jack's course) and seeing a few more good mesh examples would probably help some of them out.

Don't make me laugh! :D I think the anim is good only in that I did it within the 2hr additional time frame - but it's not "good". I have an idea in my head about how the critter should move and there's a hint of it in the anim. I am going to pursue this one and see if I can improve all aspects of the model and then figure out the movement better.

Thanks for the support once again - when people give you a pat on the back it means your on the right track. (usually!)

Well here's another pat! This is great stuff for the within the time limit. The anim is great and I get the sense that this creature is much bigger than he/she looks! ;) The 'character' of it is comletely different when animated compared to the still image and is really brought to life.

I'm going to try your extrusion technique on my own character - any tips? :)

Nez: Go on...download it :) - it's only 200K odd! This forum has jpegs bigger than that!

Ha, you're right - I saw there was a download and didn't even check the size! They have me so conditioned....

I'm no animation expert, so I can't really offer much in the way of fair C&C, but I liked it overall (most complicated animation I ever did was making a camera move along a static object!).

Like Blakeo, I get the sense of quite a large creature (dinosaurs came to mind, despite the appearance). To me, it looked like there was something abit off with the 'walk cycle' (second leg seemed to lift too soon?) but the head motion and mouth/eye/nostril morphs were very nice.

Particularly impressed in the timeframe, although I've no idea of what you've technically had to do to achieve all this - it would no doubt be useful to put together a mini-tutorial on what's been done...

It does look a lot bigger animated.. nice work :)

Your robot looks great Nez, the good thing with these things is you can recycle limbs, my first plan was legs made of different things, ie scafolding poles and maybe a radio mast but i chickened out

If you do fancy waging war against the mechanical robots your welcome to my model, I'd love to see it move but i suck at bone animation

Yeah, I kinda got bored of robots really quickly after that. :D Anyhows, I've had a quick bash just to show some support for the SMC. It's not a full model, just a bust of one of my fave characters. Like I said, not my thing (at the mo) but thought I'd kinda dip my toes in the water.

Thanks for all the compliments guys - I feel like staring at my shoes and going "Aw shucks."

The creature is supposed to be taller than a person but not much but given that it is kind of chunky it would out-weigh a person greatly. Part of what I imagine with the movement is that it would walk slowly but it has the capacity to move very fast in short bursts and the head would be very agile despite the size of it. I think some of that does come through in the anim although I would need to do a lot of work on it to get a nice walk cycle. Actually I think the hip and shoulder joints need a bit of a re-think to get a little more movement out of them.

Edit: Btw the compliment re getting the rigging plus morph targets plus animation done within the 2 hrs should go in large part to Caligari - the tools are real easy to use. This is the first character anim I've done in workspace, my previous tS efforts like the alien thing I did for the competition earlier this year were on the modelside using Motion Studio and the new workspace tools seemed much easier. (2nd Edit: Actually, come to think of it I did the rigging in the 3hr modelling time - still 2 hrs for morphs and animation is still pretty good.)

Great work everybody! Excellent support for the challenge

It's the last chance to get something up if you're still working on anything... the deadline is fast approaching :D

Blakeo is it the crazy professor from the Back to the Future films? Christopher Lloyds character.

LoL, rather nice blakeo and resemblance I recognized even before I read anything. It was the first thing I thought when I saw your character when opening up the page. Back to the Future movies I watched many times.

Great job everyone, really an amazing amount and quality in this round!!

Now I can start the poll tonight after I get off of work since blakeo did the initial entry I probably should do the poll part. That is if I can figure it out :). More later.

Well I have to admit that if this "Flipje" Character came up to my door at night he/she would freak me out. I'm not comfortable next to a guy/girl with dingle berries hanging from them!

However in the "Spirit" of the Challenge and having demonstrated good modeling skills, I have voted for this weirdo. (not you Georg, just your weirdo friend)

p.s. I'm making a pot of Chili so I invited Flipje over early...

I liked all the other entries too but they wouldn't have fit inside my pot.

In the UK our jam icons where considered racist, and sent wherever politically incorrect things go

I'm pretty sure a lot of kiddie book characters and TV are the result of an LSD trip lol

lol Bob! You have a strange imagination and thanks for the nice words. I agree, he has a sinister smile, I guess his mouth needs a firm overhaul:p

I may work a bit more on his berry-body and put him in a scene, perhaps involving a pot of chili. :)

Nigec: Flipje has become a bit obsolete here, but he always had an extremely innocent character. If any LSD was involved in the writing of Flipje's books it must have been an extremely bad trip :D

Great image of the character in the jar! And indeed Flipje is one of those older characters that leaves me puzzled as to how it was cute and not just downright terrifying. I think there are horror movies now where some teenagers recite a rhyme they find in an old book while exploring a disused cottage in a foggy forest, and Flipje is summoned from whatever dimension he has been cast out to to resume his reign of terror. Or maybe not. But it has potential ;)
