I think if you haven't actually included that element then you don't need to include the time - but if you manage to get it working and include it you possibly should? I know in the past, some people have openly used 'offline' practice to figure out their techniques before putting together their entry in the alotted time.

But I guess it's a hazy one - we'll see what the others think. I agree with Georg that your boat is very cool...

Yeah, I think if no changes were made to the boat within the timeframe that you were messing with the cloth, it shouldn't count; it isn't any different than closing TrueSpace and staring at your computer for half an hour as far as your model is concerned ;)

guys (and Kena) ... got a technical question for you...

Started modeling my entry last night but tried to experiment with 7.6 realtime cloth adn wind simulation which failed horribly (the cloth keeps crumbling up and wraps around itself into a bundle ) so I spent about an hour or so trying to get that to work for a nice "boat sail flapping in the wind" effect which I dropped for later since I didn't get anywhere...

my question is, should I count that hour as part of the modeling time restriction for the boat SMC? Because then I have spent about 3.5 hours already and would like to add some more small modeling details to the mesh before submitting it...

Ps. started a WIP for the boat since I plan to expand the model and scene after I submitted it for SMC... here is the thread : >>SMC33 boat WIP<< (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?p=75417#post75417)

I'm a guy!!! my handle is KenA because my first name is Ken and my last name starts with an "A" :p

and I would say that if you do not include the element, then you do not need to add it to your time, but Prodigy is running this contest this time around, so he would have the final word.

Come on Prodigy! We want to see that boat! :D

By a strange co-incidence, I actually saw the Earthrace boat this weekend! I was in Portsmouth and saw it coming into the harbour from the opposite shore - a very cool looking craft! Sadly, it was just a bit too far off to get a decent picture but I got a reasonable look through binoculars...

Not only 18 entries but several first timers like myself, throwing their lots in.

The voting so far reflects the high standard of several entries, and thus the difficulty of making a decision...I was torn between Nez's submarine (having extra appreciation after making a crude attempt myself) and Theuns "sand?" boat (I thought of Starwars, but Keno is right about the Myst echo -both of which drew me into 3D art). Anyway, both images were striking and compelling, but several of the rest probably as good...not the time to make a first entry though;).

Interestingly, most of the names are seasoned members of these forums. Perphaps next time the first wave of tS7.6 will have wrestled with the interface, ´manual and videos to make a showing:)

Never played Myst so I haven't heard of Teledahn ... got the idea from those tri-wheeled contraptions with surfing sails on that races across the beach or desert and the Star Wars floater thing on Tatooine near that huge sand worm hole thing :)

Nice to see so many entries and since there are entries with tS3.2 in here, just shows that you don't need the latest tools and versions to do good models... there was nothing really specific in my model that can only be done by 7.6. I did enjoy using the realtime booleans in 7.6 workspace but that is not part of the boat and booleans can also be done in 3.2 with just more time ;)

I almost didn't use 7.6 Workspace at all so I could have done this in 6.6 or before... ;)

What's always fun to see in the SMC's is the different approach and interpretation of the challenge topic.

Also, even though it didn't meet the entry deadline, Cthulhu did a super job with his kayak...and mastered nurbs to do it.

That is also the fun part, seeing totally different tools being used in tS. For one I used nothing but WS tools, someone else modeling tools, even nurbs . I was tempted just showing the model, which may have been a wiser choice in my final image but this also showed me where my weakness is as well ;).

Man, going into this I thought "How hard could it be to make a boat?" Shows how much I know... :D

Everyone did a great job. I hope to participate in more of these challenges (and maybe finish on time ).

Thanks for the kind words Heidi. I don't think I've quite mastered NURBS, though; just merely given the illusion of decent NURBS modeling (just make it shiny and orange and no one will notice... LOL).

actually, that's a pretty decent strategy for NURBS - I did pretty much the same thing in the 'shoe' SMC a long time back - the actual nurbs model was far from great but it looked pretty good in a nice shiny finish!

It's great to see a few more folks entering the challenges, both newcomers and longer term folks who've not tried it before. It's been a really good turnout the last couple of challenges. Hope many of you will try again next time round!
