Objective:
Model your favorite USB device in under 2 hours.
IE: jump drive, hard drive etc.
DEADLINE : January 28th 12:00 pm GMT
The rules:
1. Create the model(s) in the specified time.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough.
Good Luck !

This is a totally useless USB device, I call it a Scorpiusb.
I rendered it with Dribble, making use of its great capacity for displacement to get the USB logo on top.
Modeling: about an hour.
render: Dribble.
I made the logo first in a vector draw program to get a very crisp bitmap.

Hey everyone! I haven't posted in these forums in a LOOONNGGG time!!
Just saw this SMC and thought I would submit my own little work of art!
Model time: About 30 min
Lighting/Texturing: About 5 minutes
Render Time: About 15 minutes
Copying the USB like a million times: About 20 minutes
TrueSpace Version used: tS 6.6
In case you couldn't tell, the orange one is supposed to draw the attention :)
I'm having a little trouble posting the wireframe, so I'll post it sometime later if I get the chance.

Well, seeing as we got an extension, thought I'd squeeze an entry in - wish I'd known before the weekend as I'd have actually been able to spend 2 hours on the modelling, but never mind...
USB desktop missile launcher (vaguely based on photos from web):
Modelling - exceeded my lunchbreak slightly (shhh!) - about 1hr 20mins
Lighting, texturing, renders etc - about an hour and a half (in between trying to do some real work!), including my crude on-screen 'interface' design but not including the crashed render that locked up my entire pc and failed to complete after 30mins... that's what happens when you try to use area lights and IBL at the same time in TS5, so simplified the lighting after that...
Wireframe doesn't show 'pre-sds' as the only sds items were the base (just applied sds to smooth out lathed object) and missile (likewise) and the cables (swept polygon). Rest is fairly simple polys/sweeps etc - sadly you can't even make out the top grill details I 'wasted' a few minutes on due to the angle...
Quite pleased with it in the end! |
