Very interesting reading the microphone debate. I will, of course, leave it in the challenge. I didn't want to exclude it but I did want to question it as a musical instrument - and after reading the reasons I can see the intereptation is valid for singing (how do you model the voice part :) )

My personal view is the same as steinie/nowherebrain in that a mic is not the instrument - the guitar or the voice or the trumpet or the hurdygurdy is the instrument and the mic is part of a system used to channel the 'music' to the listener. A mic has many uses outside of music whereas, say, a trombone does not... well I can think of few ;)

All academic now - the mic stays. :D

Frootee: I say T'mah-toe, my partner says Toe-may-toe ;)

Hey this thing is about building up your skill level and having fun. I would be honored having it in your challenge but not because of it's merits but rather my desire to contribute.

I agree - I have learned so much from doing the challenges and having fun with them is the point :)

I'm happy to include your violin in the vote if there are no other ojections? (I feel I am still relatively new here and don't want to mess up the established SMC challenge rules :) )

I finally got my lighting correct, but Vray took waaaaay too long to render. I didn't get to bed until 5am.

Nice entry Kena! I would have gone to bed and be surprised in the morning.

Prodigy, did you fall asleep? I don't see your entry...:D

Nez, your entry looks like an instrument from "Whoville"! It also reminds me of a very bad highway system! :)

Georg just came in with a very fine piece of modeling! Only your second post but a good one. Keep contributing your stuff looks good.

WOW!! Nice entry Georg! Beautiful render. :)

So far I've failed twice to get it done anywhere near inside 2 hours (ornate classical concert harp and a trombone)... So might have to settle for a bugle... LOL

Thought these would be a lot easier to model but I keep getting caught up in all the little details... great challenge, but it's tougher than it seems at first glance.

I went for the concert harp as well (they're beautiful), but it beat me too. Maybe we should start a support group?

I'll finish it as an ordinary slow model later. It's definitely a tough challenge, however the entries so far are great.

Kena: Nice pan pipes. It's nice to see all the different choices in here.

Georg: Nice snare! You did a really great job on the texturing too; very realistic.

Prodigy: Wow, that does look complex. Good way to rise to the challenge issued. :D

Sharp eye Steinie, I almost missed it.

Article 8:
Section B:
of the SMC Guides and Standards Compendium
Clearly states....
Any submission that does not comply with section A: paragragh 1779, to include commissioned models, models up for auction, backed by annuities, stated as capital, or multiple piece arrangements(such as drums with sticks, guitars with amps, or microphones with stands..but not excluding pipe organs with seating) are subject to disqualification and fines up to $500.00 and possible death....oh yes and disqualification by Steinie

Thanks a lot for the nice comments on my snare, It means a lot to hear it from you guys!. I just bought Vray with the recent update and I like its soft shadows a lot. SMC is fun and I will try to be more active.

Prodigy's entry is fabulous, as usual. I admire the more fantasy-based musical instruments, I should do that more.

I'm not familiar with 'Whoville - wil lhave to look that up.... but I see what you mean about the highway system (or perhaps an underground/metro?)

It was kind of a jokey entry though - I have managed to scrape a few minutes to finish modelling a guitar over the weekend, just need to get it textured up and rendered over my lunchbreak today and get it posted.

Georg - really nice job. As a drummer myself, I see a few peculiarities but won't point them out! ;) I really though about doing a drum or some drums but could see the hoops giving me real problems too (it's those flared bits at the lugs I was really worried about...). Anyway, really nice job - especially on the chrome work and the logo head, very authentic...

Prodigy - well I was expecting something big, but... :o I'd say it needs more 'stops' to look convincing, but you probably wouldn't be able to see them anyway... (I mean the circular pull-out handles to either side of the keyboard area, if you are not familar with the term). Cool organ anyway (oops, can't believe I said that! :o )

Thank you for the nice comments. I know what you mean about the lugs, but being speed modelling I decided I had to take the easy way. My drumkit is not in the house so I had to use a bit of imagination there. Making the hoops the real way will require some heavy duty point editing, also at regular intervals, or perhaps sweeping selected faces at the same time. I will have to try that.

Hi guys. Some really nice entries coming in - good work everyone.

Georg - welcome to the challenge! Great model and sweet render you really nailed the shaders/textures.

Prodigy - you are an ispiration as usual. If we could all model as fast as you it would be a 30 minute challenge! :D

I've been thinking about the deadline and figured that a 5 pm EST was a bit pointless for anyone across the atlantic (from Europe that is!) as modelling is often done after work, etc. So I'm going to close the challenge tomorrow morning, Tuesday 31st at 10am BST - 9 am GMT - 4 am EST.

Sorry to anyone expecting the voting to start tonight but I know there's modellers out there attempting the SMC yet to submit. So there. :D

I like very very much the model but not the render.. :( it's dificult to take a good picture from something with so many details..

But what ever.. i want to make another entry more "visual"..
I want to make the old but incredible Roland TB-303 Baseline!!

ACID DUDE !!!!! :)

I like the guitar nez. I tried to model a Strat but again couldn't finish it in time. I'll post the slow version after the comp is over.

Gave the Harp another go, went for a simpler style and got the body done with plenty of time but stringing the blasted thing took forever... :(

Edit: Adding another cool shot of the wires:

:)

Anycase looks like this challenge bested me... looking forward to seeing your harp Transient. ;)

Nice work on the guitar Nez. Looks like this one's another challenge that's going to be a tough choice for voting.

Thanks Steine - I did indeed get a kick out of that! If I'd seen it beofre the challenge, I might have actually tried the seven-belled instrument, so it's probably as well that I didn't... the Dali version was great, and the final sculpture was superb.

Cheers for a great link :)
