Kena - I think that's probably the best thing I've seen posted by you in the forums so far. Simple but beautiful.

Doubt I'll get time to do an entry for this one but I'm glad to see the number of entries on the increase. Some great work so far and more to come I'm sure.

Yeah, I may need to actually devote myself to a true render...even though this is a modeling challenge...still, I better get on it. If I win(probably not) I will give my video's to whomever is in last place instead.

@Jack, NB - Thanks!

All of the entries are great so far. Prodigy has set the standard for the "speed" aspect of this challenge. Nice design and a beautiful render too. :)

I think whoever wins this one should be justifiably proud of themselves.

This is a "model" challenge though...with that being said.. I think you are going to take this one...and I would consider it an honor to lose to that cool bishop(I guess it's a bishop???).

I just noticed in my video of the modeling of the chess piece that the camtasia recorder says I recorded only a bit more than 1hr. The video says however that it was nearly two hours. I think this is due to the fact that I paused on 3 occasions to "smoke/coffe prep" for a few minutes. I believe that tha .avi saw the start of the recording and the finish(time) and stamped that into the file. I'm going to check the actual length by clocking it. I may have 40 min. left for modeling:D ...good news for me, as apparently I need it, going up against transient's model!
EDIT: Apparently my handle fits....I was thinking in hr's & min's. not minustes alone..and that is what it was...117 minutes not 1hr 17 minutes.

I must say this is a "Speed Model Challenge" not only Model Challenge ;)

But, the final desition is not allways for the model.. sometimes the people choose the best Render... or other the best idea.. and not allways the best model.. something im not agree..

What ever.. I like the Bishop too, is a very nice model..

I can't belive some people do one sigle chess piece in 1 hour... I mean, i must confess i know i model very fast, but model a cheess piece is more technic than speed...

With my method you can do a single piece in about 5 minutes or less, maybe i must share this method to help others over the tutorium....

I agree, I did not intend to insult you, it sounds as if you were holding back a bit on what you really wanted to say...it could be just my "reading into things though. Are you reffering to lathe/spin modeling...it is very fast! BTW- Losing to you has honor as well.

So, is it a bishop?

No insult at all... ;)

Hmm... I thought about modeling more pieces, but the challenge said Piece (singular) so I figured each piece would be a separate entry?? LOL guess it's a moot point now.

I'm still amazed at Transient's cool bishop. I bet that thing would sell killer on TurboSquid. I feel like we got a ringer here, come in to sand bag us, LOL. Can't wait to see the rest of the set....;)

BTW, huge improvement on the render Nowherebrain. With all the cool entries still coming in this is going to be another hard challenge to judge. Wow the bar is sure getting raised!

For Hemlin's piece, I would say it's a queen piece - the wires on top looks like a crown.

It reminds me of a fountain, so I would have put it as the rook in a sort of modern take on the pieces.

Just something I threw together(really).
The bar has been raised. I myself never entered...thought about it, never did it though...now the software has nearly caught up to the user....and we can actually do "stuff" with it....you should see my work in other packages....but this is not the place for such things.

I don't think it's the shading so much as the lighting. try to delete all the lights, then add a single spot for shadows...after that you could add back lights and stuff.
Oh, it's definitely the lighting and/or the settings. The shaders were just standard Vray shaders, so one presumes they behave fine under the proper conditions. I just haven't figured those out yet... I'll keep experimenting when I've got a few minutes.

Try giving them a surrounding environment...looks like it's just reflecting the colored background.

Some great entries in this competition so far.

@ Nez - The Minas Tirith entry is awesome. Very ambitious, but you pulled it off nicely. Well done.:)

Thanks very much! It could have done with another half an hour or so to tidy it up a bit more and add some of the other detailing I had in mind but I didn't have the time available if I was going to meet the deadline - I can only really work on these challenges during my lunchbreak at work, which is a little restrictive!

I'm quite pleased with how it came out although I'm not entirely happy with the lighting and some of the textures - but it's supposed to be a modelling challenge.

Your bishop is awesome by the way - I've never tried figure/character modelling and I've huge respect for anyone who can pull off something like that.

Is it too late to replace my render again. I've been playing with VRay and I've not changed the model but I have changed the lights and render settings and it looks sooo much better.

Best ask Transient - the deadline has now passed, but you were one of the first to post your actual model, and it is supposed to be a modelling challenge (though I don't think people necessarily vote on the basis of the model alone).

spent an hour and a half, and had just about finished the Knight piece when TS crashed, it turns out that when I was saving it merely saved one object, I have yet to understand the stupid save function, why cant it be the same as b4?! I cant be bothered now, I was beginning to get really happy with my progress and I lost it all, I might enter the next one, cant be bothered with this
