I know that it technically isn't an insect (8 legs), but could I do a spider?

Can it be killed with Insect Spray?...

If you hit it hard enough with it, sure it can. :-)

Great challenge. I wouldn't object to a spider. I didn't know this eight-leg thing - are they technically arachnids or something?

LOL sure I'd say go for it! :) spiders, ants, flies, bees, mechanical spiders, evil aliens from outerspace that look vaguely insectoid.... :p It can be completely made up or even a stylized character. Ha, we might even see a few snails... then again I think that could be it's own challenge...:p Basically have fun with it.

I think this is a cool one, so if you guys end up needing more time, let me know and I'll extend the deadline.

Congratulations Jack :) and nice topic..

Cheers!

Heidi wrote "I used the same process as Prodigy describes here (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2692) to put the dirt in the jar."

Glad you use it heidi.. nice bug :D

Nice job with the bugs Heidi!
JPSofCA, your pill bugs looks just like a primitive sphere...what tools did you use? You do know a wire frame must also be shown and the time it took to model. Possibly give it some legs would make a WORLD of Difference!

It was a sarcastic post - disregard. It's the planet primitive is all. I wanted to take part in the bug thing, but I committed to finishing the animation tutorial today and I'm having a devil of a time with it...namely, the keying panel's active selections disappearing on subsequent frames.

I hope I didn't ruin the speed challenge for anyone. :o

I'm ashamed and embarrassed. Anyway, nice stuff so far on the slug, and Heidi's beatle is looking fine too.

I was going to do the cap of a sphere painted like a ladybug, but I better take a breather. ;)

Since you didn't put in the modeling time etc, I took it as a small joke. No offense at all.

LOL! Insects! A great topic - but this totally cracks me up - Caligari spend thousands of person-hours trying to get the bugs out of trueSpace renders....:D

Some great work so far - I'll try and find some free time....

There should be a lot more entries for this one! I would love to see what all the rest of you creative people can come up with. How about mechanical insects? An insect bot perhaps?
According to Wikipedia there are approximately 5,000 dragonfly species, 2,000 praying mantis, 20,000 grasshopper, 170,000 butterfly and moth, 120,000 fly, 82,000 true bug, 360,000 beetle, and 110,000 bee, wasp and ant....and you can't do ONE?!:D

I also must plead before the court because I just realized why Biology wasn't in my calling...slugs aren't Insects!:o You know after closer inspection my slug does look something like a Love Bug! That would be a nice story....:D

Uhhhhh.....Why does the thing say that I started this thread? Last I checked, I posted the starting message in the official SMC #14 thread... Ahhh well, I guess the Caligarians are sneaking around again...:p

PS. I like the initials used for Speed Model Challenge (SMC)... Hmmmm, perhaps they should have their own section on the forum, instead of being located in the roundtable. Same thing for SAC's as well!:jumpy:

You know, I think that if I of all people can come up with something, then all those people who are good with all those organics should also be able to come up with something. I would really like to see more than just two or three entries for this one.

I think the entries in there right now are fantastic! I just haven't gotten a chance to do one. Might not too. Wrapped up in a personal project that is taking any personal time up. Still going to maybe throw one together this weekend.

"Bug Spray"!! Pure magic! Oh wait - Kates a magician so I shouldn't be surprised.

I laughed so hard at that picture my partner thought I was choking!

So I have to ask, Kate: is that what you feed Bird on? Bugs from the bug spray can?

Some excellent work here for this challenge. These SMC's are a great idea - everyone I enter teaches me something else about trueSpace - and about the awesome creativity of tS users.

Lots of very cool bugs coming in and great ideas too! Stevebe's bug caught me off guard, thought it was a character from the musical "Hair" That HAD to be fun to do!

Its very nice to see the interest growing again. Thanks to all the people who entered this one, a really nice job.:)

SteveBe's hairy bug looks like something that should be on a trueSpace feature page :) Awesome work.

I'm quite happy to see the number of submissions going up... just in time for the tomorrow deadline.

Yep, StevBe's 'hair-ball' is pretty nasty looking, as is W!zards bug.

Prodigy has done pretty much what I originally wanted to do, but figured he (or someone else) would do it better anyway  so I tried something different.

Nice to see an interetsing mix of styles too, from 'cartoon' to realistic to 'fantasy'...

Good luck everyone!

(and thanks Jack!)

Thanks ProfessorKhaos! From a modeling stand point you can see from the
wireframe, it's pretty simple. This was fun to do though and it's nice to work
on a creature type theme for a change. Good pick Jack!:)

All great submissions here!!! I hope the number of entries keep growing in
future challenges.

Wow, there's some fantastic entries this time! Is it me or is the quality of the models this time much higher than before? Maybe the new 7.5 tools... :)

I'm hoping to squeeze a model out tonight, I've missed out on the last few challenges.

Spyfrog, Not bad for your first attempt of something "living". I would actually suggest working on it further after the contest to get a nice finished piece for the finished gallery thread.
I laughed when I saw Witches bug spray, especially after our last communication on how to kill a bug! One idea that came to my (microscopic) mind when I saw your wireframe was placing more bugs inside the can in the see through. I would then suggest submitting that to the gallery, wire and rendered.
Transient's caterpillar I think was well executed. He/she has been doing this before!
Heidi alway makes it look easy while we mere mortals struggle.
Kena managed to take a fairly simple shape and give it beauty!
Nez created what I hoped someone would take on, "The Mechanical Insect!" Fine work too.
If I ever saw W!zards bug in real life I would have a coronary! I don't see the wings in the render? Like a flying ant it drops them?...
Blackhawk picked the bug that would make Marie-Antoinette quiver. Nice Work!
Hemulin, it was nice to see you do something organic!
Prodigy always make it look good! Nice DOF, exactly what it needed.
ProfessorKhaos did something I didn't expect with the lightning bug glow. One of those "I wish I thought of that" moments.
Stevebe, If your bug isn't Tina Turner I don't know what is...
Go Blakeo Go!
Maybe Jack can sneek one in there tonight.;)

WOW I am continually impressed with the cleverness of the people on this TS forum. The verity of submissions for the “insect” challenge has shown wit (put a small on my face), creativity (an incentive to learn more), originality (I can not help but to learn something new each time I visits here). Thank you all
