Ah no, I didn't. I just used the default camera view in the 4 View setup. I guess it's good practice to have an actual camera object?

Ya I never used to either but I found that having a camera setup is much better and you don't have to worry about rotating around your object and messing up your view, I tend to setup the camera for rendering and then only switch to it when I render or laying out the scene by opeing a new window and switching to the camera view, and typically use the 4 view or single view while creating a scene of object.
