The contest title uses Speed before modeling, you know...like Speed Chess?
Yes... and like speed chess, it's the speed time spent on the action that counts, not the speed spent getting around to doing it. If two friends schedule a game of speed chess for later in the week rather than later in the afternoon, it's still speed chess so long as they are using the clocks when making their moves and set time limits for the game. It's the time within the game that counts, not the time that happens before and after. Same with the speed modelling.
If you don't have the time, then don't participate.
This is a redundancy, not a piece of advice.
Instead of spending time conversing with me on this thread or viewing other threads, you could have been modeling if you so wish. If you don't want to model, then that's good too.
Actually, no I couldn't. The five minutes I take to browse the forums during my breaks at work are not exchangeable with two hours at home to model.
But we digress; I brought up my specific work situation not to complain, but to provide an example of why not everybody provides their entry immediately.
For the life of me, I can't see any reason to look askance at somebody who does the challenge later within the time window as opposed to earlier. It's a speed modelling challenge, not a speed get to it challenge. The question is simply "Can you do this in two hours?" The question is not "Can you do this in two hours starting now?" |

Who was the brilliant brain who start all this thing???
Its simple.. Here are a FUNNY SPEED "MODELING" challenge..
1) This is not a RACE who submit their work first, you dont gonna win nothing.. only for fun.
2) the rule is finish your work in 2 hours.. no more.. if you what work 5 hours.. on the modeling?? its ok!! but here we like the fair play !!
3) If you dont have 2 hours to spend in you day.. dont worry maybe you have 15 minutes to start.. other day work 15minutes.. and you have 30 mins.. SIMPLE.. WHO cares if you have 2 hours or 30 mins ... if you whant you can join us..
4) Doesnt matter how good you think are your work.. if for fun... to practice, and show to others your skills.. Maybe you think your work is uggly but to others user be great!! And you gonna see in the next challenge you gonna do better and better.. |

Let's see...you live in Springfield Oregon, two hours before me and two hours ago when you posted which means it was 7 PM. Are you still at work?
If not at work, why are you wasting time posting. :D |

Thanks, good to know that .. ;)
jamesmc:
Impenetrable is a spanish word..
In spanish be.. Cepillo Impenetrable .
Cepillo means Brush.. Impenetrable means the same :D
To compose a phrase in spanish first you must put the person, in this case is cepillo..
Cepillo Impenetrable -Spanish
Impenetrabe Brush. -English
A little lesson of spanish!! jejeje
And BTW Shaving Brushes, HOOOO!!! that remember me when im child.!!! playing with my father's shaving brush!!
And in spanish be
Brocha de mi Padre..
Father's shaving brush..
Its like you must turn the words to say in spanish. |

Hi James,
I think your impenetrable brush entry is very ambitious and a very good use of the topic. Personally I'm a slow modeller so I probably wouldn't attempt such a complex scene for a contest, but I really like the work you did on the plants and creative way you fleshed out the scene.
Even though this is a modeling contest and the focus is mainly on object construction (hence the importance of the wireframes) I think that the quality of the presentations is on such a level that the presentation itself can't be ignored. I think you're entries would fair considerably better with better lighting and texturing. Admittedly the VRay users have a significant advantage in that department since they can just click on GI, soft shadows, and Caustics to get rid of that CGI look. With Lightworks it's a fair bit harder, area lights and shadowmaps to get soft shadows, negative lights to darken corners, HDRI to get some of the soft tones similar to GI, but with a creative light setup it's possible to get great results there too. Daybe's and Wicked Witch's entries for example make good use of the lightworks engine. Lightworks also supports layered textures, something not supported yet in VRay for TS.
While I disagree with you about speed being the emphasis of the challenge here (why we made it 2 hours instead of 1 hour), I do agree with you that I would like to see more people posting multiple entries. But I have to be a hypocrite there most weeks since being a procrastinator I usually don't do the challenge until the very last 2 hours. LOL Heck a couple of my entries didn't even get textured.
Anycase, hang in there James. From many of your posts it seems you feel a bit negative about things as they currently are, but 7.5 is going to be awesome and well worth the wait.
@Vizu:
Beautiful render Vizu! Love the concept and execution.
@ Prodigy:
Great work as always! Is that an accurately rendered translucent plastic I see? Care to share your shader settings? :D
@ Graysho:
Very clean and efficient use of polygons on your Wacom airbrush tool.
Gonna be another hard contest to choose the best entry! It's getting as competitive as the monthly gallery LOL!

So, it's not a speed modeling contest, but a lighting contest.

jamesmc,
you need work in modeling, lighting, texturing and camera angle.. anything to sell your work.. if its only a modeling contest you must show only the wireframe... or even without textures and a common light setup.. :(
If you wanna show your model without texture.. you can.. if its a good detailed model i think many people gonna vote.. |

Stop being a prat!!
According to the Wiki, Prat is:
Etymology
The word prat is known to have meant "buttocks" since the 16th century and was originally criminals' slang but is otherwise of unknown origin. The British slang sense of "dolt" or "fool" is recorded from the 1970s. It also means a brat i.e. a naughty person.
I always have a hard time understanding the meaning of some English slang :D

Maybe we should wait for Stoker to rephrase what he said into something more universal. ;) Though i know the point he is trying to make (me being British).....I empathise with you Rich, some English slang bemuses me too. |

It is a speed modeling contest after all and I didn't have the time to do all the little things that make an image better.
You confuse me slightly here, you say you dont have enough time to do the little things that make an image better yet you still have time to post the sarcastic and negative comments on the forum and enter 3 or 4 images in one contest on the same day and yet u dont have much time??.........Ok then:confused: |

Specific help I don't mind, but when someone tells me everything is wrong about what I do, then I object. (you need work in modeling, lighting, texturing and camera angle) How does generalization help?
Advise like name-calling - there isn't much value in that now is there?

Just what is your problem Stoker?
If you would have paid attention to other threads, you will see I have posted in WIP the Kiwi Shoebrush, along with other projects.
Yes i can see..
What artwork have you posted?
I am currently doing some art work for the speed modelling contest. and I prefer not to post general art work on here or less it something such as that. (just my preference)
Are you the forum police? Didn't think so. No i didnt think so either
You sound like a student just like your bio, obstinate and thinks he knows everything. Well you got that wrong!
I've had enough of this, i hope this thread continues with more entries, I'm out of here!! |
