Further to TomG's comments in the following thread

here (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=6562&page=2), I have a Quadro FX1000 card in my work desktop (which is an otherwise reasonable Dell).

I've talked them into installing tS7.6 today (hurray!) but I get an error on loading up to do with the realtime renderer; see error log and screen cap attached.

Basically, I have surmised that I currently have no DirectX support whatsoever on my machine, but I may be wrong... basically, if I try to use Worspace, it says 'renderin temporarilly unavailable' or some such, but I can use the Model sied in openGL or Direct3D (RGB emulated) modes. I'm not too sure if there's a difference between D3D and directX - it's all a bit foreign to me...

It's not the end of the world as I intend to mostly loko at Model side in the first instance, but need to have an idea of best approach; I think an updated GPU driver might help as this card should at least support directx9 I believe, so it ought to at least run workspace, if not very well? I'm pretty sure a newer driver exists than the one currently installed...

I can try to talk them into a GPU replacement, but as it's probably AGP, I'm probably limited to a 7600 at best, although that would almost certainly be an improvement - if they can find one...

Any thoughts?

Extra note: found a tip to run 'dxdiag', where the following screen grabs come from; looks like I have no 'direct3d acceleration' available, which I'm assuming to be the problem. Don't know whether a new driver can fix this, or whther that's a limitation of the card?

Will try asking nVidia but don't know how good their support is...

Thanks

Oops - guess this should maybe have been in 'hardware'...

nez, check that the hardware acceleration settings are turned up to full. If I recall correctly, go to display properties->settings->advanced and it should be under troubleshooting. Sometimes business machines have it switched off.

Looks like no DirectX installed. Note that DirectX is NOT actually in the video card drivers - DirectX is in fact an MS product for handling 3D. Video card drivers are just set up to "talk" to it, translating between the hardware and what DirectX expects, and DirectX is a "windows standard" way of implementing 3D.

You can download and install DirectX from MS if it is not there (an entirely separate process from DLing and installing video card drivers). From the previous post sounds like it can also be there, but switched off. Latest version of DirectX is 9.0c.

HTH!

Thanks guys;

I'm pretty sure hardware accelaeration is enabled, so it seems more likely that it's a problem with my DirectX installation - I've passed the problem to my IT department too to see if they can come up with something. Hope they can at least confirm or deny the presence of a proper DirectX installation...
