Food for thought here
A mirrorball (disco ball) reflects light shining at it and bounces that back all over the walls and floor, like we all know they do. But how will we be able to emulate that in truespace?
I know truespace can't do advanced light computing like that as when I tried placing a white light behind a "gel" the light still came out white...so what would be the best way to emulate such an effect? And even more so how would I be able to emulate this effect if there is only one light source on one side of the mirrorball?
Will it have something to do with volumetrics? and do you think there's also a way to use "gels" instead of actual lights? |

If you own vray, you can doit with caustics..
that's how i doit for my CGSphere entry long time ago..
(BTW, Wizard made a very similar scene with a banana.. even he call it "let's dance" as i do.. huge coincidence... :p )
With lightworks.. you can do with some projector lights..
use a texture like this one and that's all..

Ha remember use faceted faces on your sphere.. that will do the trick for the mirror ball.. |

Hey congrats Prodigy! :D
YafaRay should also be able to do this. You'll need to use the smooth shading settings on the "Misc" tab of the YafaRay4tS panel and apply those to the object to get it to render faceted. And don't forget to use a high number of photons in the caustics settings -- 3 million or so should be ok. |

A good reason to also try out Kerkythea because it does volumetric lighting and shows the beam and the lighting coming from the ball pretty well.
you can also use dispersion heres the file with the room that I made forf you and a discoball that I made for you to test. note only photon mapping works with volumetrics so use only photo map presets...:) |

Yeah, Peter's right on this one. While you should be able to get good results from both VRay and YafaRay. Kerkythea will probably produce the best results for this kind of situation. :) |

As a side note, you're completely able to produce a light 'gel' effect right out of the box using tS and the Lightworks renderer.
A couple things have to happen first:
The light should have transparent, not solid shadows.
19366
The material used for the 'gel' should use transmission, not transparency.
19365
Here I've switched on volumetrics to make the light beam visible, but volumetrics are not required.
They do help add to the smoky dance floor ambiance, however.
19362
If you want to examine this scene in more detail, here it is as well.
Note the settings for the spotlight and the material settings on the green 'gel'.

@Spacekdet - that's a really cool effect. I never would have thought of using transmission this way, thanks. :) |

Works with the ol' Colo(u)r Theory as well.
Here is a red spotlight, a blue 'gel', and the resulting purple light.

Seems to work best with the spotlight. |

Ooooooh, that's cool.
If Vray isn't coming back, then I would love to see an upgrade to Lightworks. That, plus a working 3delight plug-in and truespace is back in business. |

Thanks guys....Sadly...I don't have lightworks or any other render engine, just the software TS one...and for now that's how it's likely to stay. Thanks for the help and what I do is use a projector light shining outwards from the sphere itself. |

Weevil, if you have tS then you also have Lightworks and Virtualight. |

Lightworks is the inbuilt renderer in tS since version 5 (or 4). |

Odd...I never honestly knew about it, if it's built in i guess I've been using it the whole time....unless I have to do somethign else to be using that specific renderer...I'm a real herbert when it comes to these things |

Unless you switched to Virtualight (7.6) or Vray, you must have been using it...:D |

Yep, if you have tS6.6, whenever you click "render scene" or "render object" then that's Lightworks doing the rendering.
HTH!
