I hear ya Prodigy.

Without Dribble I would have no access to decent hair/fur and displacment mapping. Two feature that tS should really have out of the box.

As for improvements in Lightworks......

Vray fixes, perhaps but new features??

I think Caligari's epic-fail with vray is pretty much unmatched in the 3dworld. At least no others that I'm aware of spring to mind. How to kill 3d software 101.

Vray bug fixes......meh.......just bring on Dribble. 3delight 8.0 is pretty awesome, I'm really looking forward to it.

Vray must be a head of pain for microsoft.. and i truly understand they'd stop sales.. I should do the same if i was MS..

Microsoft must focus ONLY on truespace.. that has sense and im totally Agree..

The point that I DO NOT understand.. is why Chaos group do not take control from Vray for truespace (sales and development)

i cant believe that chaos group have 0 interest on truespace community, or i won't think that truespace wont give or negotiate the vray source code for the plugin with chaos group people..

Vray must be aviable only from chaos group website and they must support the plugin, no better people for that task that Chaos group..

So, that's why i can't understand why vray was discontinued..

my 30 cents

Has sense right?

Im still wondering why i can't see my Vray Icon on my signature??

I always had the impression that Roman is working on something else different and apart from tS.

He keeps tS as part of his legacy and continues to develop it.

Could be wrong, just a hunch...

Vray is dead. And the chances of any other third party with a brain having dealings with Caligari now must be zero.

I think James is on the money.

However, assuming that the new patch is still coming out I would expect improvements across the board. It's the least that the poor mugs that stupidly paid for this software deserve.

Safe to say that tS is not going to branch toward use in movies in the cinema - since Caligari has spent 20 years not viewing that as our ultimate use, I especially doubt it is going to start now ;)

Remember that the slogan was "3D for the web age". This is where tS is coming from. Things like VRML just didn't cut it, Caligari supported those way back in tS3. So you can see that 3D for the web, real-time interactive 3D, is nothing new to tS, it really was what it was always all about. But with VRML and other "3D on the web" solutions not working, why not just do it yourself? This is why the inclusion of shared spaces, collaborative modeling, greatly improved real-time renderer, etc. An extension of what tS was always aimed at.

tS has found a great deal of use beyond that of course, and sees a great deal of development on tools that are broader than that. So you have offline rendering, etc. tS found its biggest use amongst illustrators, product designers, and architects, to date at any rate.

tS certainly wasn't, and still isn't, just about pre-production (though it would be an admirable tool for such a thing). It was (and is) intended for media, cg and animations - just not media, CG or animations for blockbuster Hollywood hits or a TV series (animated or otherwise), etc. You could use it to make those, but it just was not it's main focus, so it's workflow and toolset is not streamlined and created to fit those specifically, unlike other tools.

But it was, and still is, software that can produce media, cg and animation (cg just means computer generated, so anything and everything in tS fits that bill; media just means a mechanism for delivery, and tS can deliver in many media, from still to trad animation to real-time interactive 3D; and animation, again, tS can deliver in trad animation to WMVs and other premade files, through to the newer and more rare interactive 3D).

Hope this helps on the historical perspective. Of course the future is wide open!

Tom

Help me out here guys cuz from my simple cave man perspective there is nothing that I would want to do in intereactive web applications that I would not use in an animation or film production. Will the interactive web applications of the future exclude fur, physics, keyed animation (intialized by some interactive event) etc? Have we lost sight of the fact that the future of entertainment will be interactive 3d web? We need to take our cues from forward thinking genii (plural for genius) like Paul Woodward. Hollywood studios and other mainstays of the entertainment world are getting ready for the day they have to rip off Pepe!!!!!

I am not sure of how a production pipeline for creating game characters or content, animation, interactive 3d web significantly differ other than the format of the final output. It all needs to be modelled, skinned, textured, assembled in a scene delivering some kind of message and delivered to our customers as a consumable product. Post production editing has always existed and was never a feature of TS so no problems there. UV maps have always needed to be created/edited in 2d painting and drawing apps.... they abound and were never part of TS.

To be economical our solution needs to be able to import assets from other sources whether it is meshes, textures, meshes with textures or meshes with textures and bones and animations.

Issues with bug fixes etc aside, I see TS as a capability engine and Calgari as the group to put the alternator, the carb and pistons into that engine. Custom wheels and exhaust are the things we will have to build for ourselves like in the old days of building hot rods in the garage.

There seems to be a number of new faces interested in customizing the environment and as they learn more about scripting and coding in c++ etc there will be more to choose from.

Some have posted comments about raising issues and not getting responses. The 3p developers available today are few and it will take quite some time to get the new crew added to that number so I am hopeful that the future will hold more opportunities for us all.

Realizing that animation and game content creation are not the intended purpose of TS I am hoping that Caligari will continue to provide some of the flow/output options we have enjoyed in the past.

Funny you should say that!

Gets out crystal ball, polishes it carefully, pours in all the little nuggets that reading between the lines Might imply....

My prediction

Microlife.

A Microsoft alternative to second life with souped up modelling capability, collaboration, business, games, online social gathering, realtime user interaction, inworld navigation etc etc

Seems to fit well into the stated goals and emphasis?

Of course I have been known to be wrong... there was once in 1986, and then that other time I bought an Oric not a zx spectrum. :D

I hate the look of second life. it looks like an old video game. I tried and I'm bored. Just right for those who have time to lose. Of course it's just my opinion, I understand that some have an interest with SL. I hope TS not going to become a tool as heartbreaking :D

Perhaps you would change your mind about Second Life if it made money for you? I know many people in second life who are millionaires from selling useless virtual items like clothes and beds. All the more for buying it, they say joyfully!

money is not my priority. I earn my living by working 2 hours a day and doing what I like. OK it will be nice to make money with SL, but it will not change my mind. do you love someone more because he is rich?

When i need a soft, i use the Caligari Gallery contest and win a TrueBones mega pack. :D

No, but I was only pointing out that some do not regard the old video game look because there are literally millions of second lifers who obiously dont care much how it looks, ( I agree with you) They are stimulated through the Online and Interactive Social Networking aspect, Oh yea and marketers and capitalists see this as a bonanaza too because it is growing and continues to grow.

I think TrueSpace could innovate and surpass the secondlife visually.

Congrats on your recent win.! and just let me know if you need any help on your projects.

Cheers

Exactly! plus a lot more besides I would guess. The power of Microsoft tech know how combined with previously unheard of power of building tools(TS) for this genre. The power of realtime rendering etc etc. Seems to me a strong contender for a longterm progression? Certainly has merit from a business point of view, judging by the continued increase subscribers in Secondlife. rather hard to ignore the sheer scale of popularity.

I agree the current SL visuals are poor, so are the building tools; thats my point.... there is big potential for an improved version.... better modelling tools, better visuals, online collaboration etc etc. And to successfully compete with such a large operation as SL it will take another large corporation to have any hope of success -> MS

If MS don't pursue this route, someone else absolutely will!
