Well, in a few weeks (14th Feb) I am accompanying the annual school trip which this year is a Creative Arts trip to New York. Itinerary includes usual fare: Cruise around Manhattan, Empire State, Rockerfeller, Moma, Guggenheim, Central Park, Bubba Gump's, Hard Rock cafe etc.

Never been to the US before so, if anyone is around and really wants to see if I am as handsome/scary/short/bald as I appear...well, now you can find out.

I know, I know...it's a big place but you never know. if you see a worn out looking teacher dragging 30+ kids around looking lost...just say hi!

P.S Just how cold is it out there??

It's Prett-tty damn cold in New York City in Mid February Splinters. You'd better bring a heavy coat, gloves, and a hat which covers your ears. :)

Dragneye and 3dfrog would know best I think though.

If you get a chance check out Times Square too.

New york in February can be very cold ! But on the Brooklyn bridge

it gets Ice cold because of the wind.....

Its worth going there though because looking at the skyline is realy cool

especially after sunset...

You might like to look at the New york fashion week too its should be around the first week of February..

Was in NY on the 9/11 day

NYC is like most big cities - eye over load and tightly packed.

I have a weakness for Deli's (delicatessens.) If you can find a good one, well worth the adventure in examining the fine eats. :)

Be sure and copy the lads and lasses passports. Put them on copies of paper pages, bind them. Give a copy to the Hotel manager for quick reference. Makes things go much easier on field trips if a quick reference is available. We used on trips that I help sponsored and its handy as a manager to know which hotel room they stay, medicines and etc.

Appears to be a very good itinerary. Wish you and your group success and hope you enjoy the trip.

Oh, and in some areas of NYC, it's hard to find someone who actually speaks English. :D

(pokes fun at New Yorkers)

Careful visiting America, once you get over here you might choose to stay ;)

NY was fun, though only had 2 days or so to see anything of it, so didn't see much. Did see the Christmas Special at Radio City, the Empire State Building, lots of skyscrapers, and a Russian vodka bar, so it was fun! I wouldn't recommend the latter for your trip though!

Haha perhaps, perhaps - 7 or 8 hours on a plane in charge of a large group of kids might be enough to drive anyone to drink!

Prepare for snow....cold feet ! Plan for the small possibility that the airport may get snowed in for a day. On the plus side, it's been a fairly mild Winter !
A great musical play and story that they might be interested in is "Wicked" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked_(musical). It's the sory behind the "Wizard of Oz" witches as they were growing up. The Wicked Witch was actually a nice little green girl who was picked on and went through some rough times as a child. The tickets are a bit expensive however (http://www.ticketmaster.com/Wicked-NY-tickets/artist/965961?camefrom=OVER_SEM&WT.srch=1), so you may wish to just see a movie instead ?!
I'm sure your class is very excited, and it will be a fun time to remember !!!

I think you will enjoy New York tremendously. I have only been once for industry conferences for Y2K.

You will find many establishments carry Guiness and there are many places you can get a great curry.

My all time favourite restaurant in NY is a steak house called "Palm Too". It was the best price for a steak dinner within several blocks. One of the folks I was with had some of the seafood and said it was ok but no raves... stick to the beef.

If I remember correctly it was around 2nd avenue and 44th street (It was one of the few cab rides I took sober).

Good luck and enjoy.

Layers is the key to dressing for the cold. Don't wear large coats -- you'll freeze very quickly. Instead do 2 shirts, a sweater, hooded jacket, scarf, gloves, 2 socks, etc. Plus it's a lot more compact and easier to move around like that.

To give you an idea of the cold Splinters, the Washington, DC area where I live was -8 degrees Celsius daytime around inauguration day and New York is a fair bit north of us. You might get lucky and catch a day as warm as 10 degrees Celsius though... lol.

Just be glad you're not going up where Dele lives, he's been living at something like -17 degrees Celsius... heh.

Don't know if you guys would have time but there is a train to DC and it only takes a few hours. So it could be fun to add the capitol to your trip. Usually when we have friends come over from overseas, we tour them around DC then send 'em up to New York so they can see both cities.

Of course it's important to stress to your students that cities aren't what makes America great. It's the vast "fly-over" country. You get a rather jaded view of America and Americans if you only see the cities and only interact with the people who live in the cities.

Hope you guys have fun! :D

Ah, you're finally jumping the pond to come visit us. :)

Sounds like a new book in the writing. Pepe visits the big apple. :p

I'm sure you'll have fun. It will likely be a bit warmer by the time you get here. Pretty much the whole U.S. has been in a cold snap here. Big cold snaps like this usually only last a week or two though.

Unless you want to come up here to Minnesota and visit us. We like it cold in the winter up here. The last two or three weeks have been around -23C to-28C (not including the wind chill). We've been known to get down to -40C (without wind chill) some years. I don't think we'll hit that this year though. Anyway, it's nice and warm now. I think we're around a comfortable -9C to -6C. So come on up here. We can grab a few lawn chairs, head out on one of the 10,000 (currently frozen) lakes here in Minnesota, drill a few holes, and do some ice fish'en. ;) Jk, I know that you guys can't make it up here this trip. Maybe another time. ;)

I agree with Jack too, try to get down to DC if you can. See our Nations Capital. The White House, Lincoln memorial, etc. There is a LOT to see in America. It's a pretty big place. You'll have to come visit at least a few times to see all the big hot spots (Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Rocky Mountains, Yellow Stone, Hollywood, Vegas, etc.).

I hope you guys have a good trip though. Take some pictures for us. :)

Well, Yellowstone might be a bit risky these days seeing that it's showing signs of erupting... of course if it does it'll likely take 1/3 of the US with it anyway, so maybe good to see the sites before that happens... heh. :p

I can attest that February is the worst of the winter months. If it's any consolation, NYC (Manhattan) is usually a few degrees warmer then the other boroughs (the 'concrete jungle' and all)... but you may not be able to tell.

Don't let that scare ya though; your problem will be that there's more to see than you'll have time for. :)

Well I hope you have better weather than I did when I went to NY back in 2006 (feb).

I managed to time it to coincide with a record snow fall:- CLICK HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_blizzard_of_2006)

Very cold but very pretty. Here's me in central park, how the locals were getting around, and a picture post card shot of the city.

On the plus side, the day after the skys were as clear as crystal and the view from the empire state building was incredible!

Have a great time Paul. (oh and keep an eye out for my wallet. I dropped it somewhere in Times Square. Should still be there somewhere:D)

@ Mr. 3D:

Usually Discovery and History channel specials need to be taken with a grain (shaker) of salt. But the current worrying data is a bit more recent than that:

Cheers for the update on the weather. On the UK news today we heard 23 had died in the ice storms sweeping the country so I am dreading the weather.

As for tours, they are all arranged so no chance to nip over to DC I am afraid.

Hopefully, I can grab an hour or two to meet up with a few tS'rs in NY....:p

I lived 6 months in Manhattan a long time ago . Do not worry about the cold. There are plenty of holes that send water vapor in the streets. :D

Finis - very true. I am a nature boy at heart, so I am lucky because where I live, I am 20 minutes away from center of Manhattan, and 20 minutes going the other way, towards nature :)

3dfrog - I'm game. Shoot, I haven't seen ya in a while as it is. Paul, whatta ya say mate?

MadMouse - yup, that was fun. But there Still wasn't enough to build an igloo (been wanting to do that since I was a kid).

Would love to meet up guys but all depends on the schedule. As you can imagine, with 35 kids, a busy itinerary and three members of staff, there might not be much chance to get away but I will see what can be done...:D
