Reading webcomics? Heck I want to MAKE webcomics! My comic addiction is already in full flight - on my last trip to England I was introduced to Judge Dredd, 2000ad, ABC Warriors etc and I'm still suffering from the effects!;)

"UK£1= NZ$2.68! WTF!?" Yeah! Now you know why there are so many Kiwi New Zealanders in London! It hurts getting from here to there but it's so sweet coming back with a few quid in your pocket!

"You're lucky to have such an understanding & generous woman in your life." Yes my friend, you have SO got that right - she is everything I could wish for in a partner and more - she is very supportive of me and my art - her single fault is that her dad doesn't own a computer store!!!:D

Re monitors, I have a line on a 21 inch CRT that belongs to a friend of mine - she's a quadraplegic who relies heavily on her computer for contact with the rest of the world and she's thinking of upgrading to a 21 inch LCD (drool!) which means her current monitor might be available to me - fingers crossed!

Your suggestion about tSnet is a goody - should have thought of it myself.

LOL. I used to be into 2000AD, Infact I used to have quite a few of them, but due to an unpleasant sequence of events my collection was drastically reduced. I haven't actually bought any since I was in my teens, but I think I still have some somewhere. As for Dredd - yeah, I liked him too, & even thought the movie was not too bad, but I was really annoyed with it for 1 thing - he isn't supposed to show his face, EVER. It's kinda like a running gag in the comic, & I was annoyed that they ignored that in the film.

As for webcomics, yeah, I er... <cough> read a few (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/comiclinks). :o Though out of those, only 2 [Bot and Cam, & Requiem] are done in 3D. IIRC Bot and Cam is done in 3DSM, & Requiem is done in Bryce & Poser.

may be some on this forum who might not take kindly to my opinion of it - though if I aired my opinion of it over on Rederosity it'd no doubt start an all-out flame-war! :p]

Yeah! Now you know why there are so many Kiwi New Zealanders in London! It hurts getting from here to there but it's so sweet coming back with a few quid in your pocket!

Well, I didn't know, but I do now. :) I haven't been to London in years - it's about an hour away by train & I hate travelling, & don't have any reason to go there. But I see your point about the money.

You're lucky to have such an understanding & generous woman in your life.Yes my friend, you have SO got that right - she is everything I could wish for in a partner and more - she is very supportive of me and my art - her single fault is that her dad doesn't own a computer store!!!:D ROFLMAO! So-called "normal" guys want a woman who's dad owns a pub, but we geeks have more sensible fantasies! :D

Good luck on that - tell her to aim for 1 with a response time no higher than 12ms - the lower the better, but that's about the highest I'd recommend. She might also want to check that it's VESA wall-mount compatible [basically has a bunch of holes on the back for connecting a standard wall-mount arm], that way she could get a wall-mounted [or table mounted if that's more suitable] arm for it, so she could have it exactly where she wants it in terms of distance to her & angle, etc. Only thing is though, that the better the arm, the higher the price [as with everything], but as an example a simple arm like this 1 (http://www.ergomounts.co.uk/EM178A-wall-mounted-lcd-monitor-arms.htm), which I'm thinking of getting when I get my 19" LCD, goes for £46, but as you can see (http://www.digiuk.com/sectionlist.asp?c=2022075&s=&sm=&guid=&id=278) they can go quite a bit higher than that. I shudder to think what they cost over there.

Your suggestion about tSnet is a goody - should have thought of it myself.

I'm sure you would have in time. :)

LOL - "I knew you'd say that!" Yeah I thought the movie was under-rated by a lot of people (note: I'm one of the two people I know who enjoyed 'Battlefield Earth') - and I thought Sylvester made a good Dredd too - though I still remember half of the theatre booing when he took his helmet off!

Poser? I don't use it myself but I don't think it's necessarily a bad program - I've seen some really good stuff done with it but I've also seen an amazing amount of bad adolescent fantasy stuff too. We probably shouldn't knock the software because of the lack of vision of some of it's users!

Re Kiwis in London - there are so many there that it can be hard to find a pub that isn't staffed by them - it's virtually a cliche! In Africa the youngsters go and kill a lion as a rite of passage - in New Zealand the youngsters fly to London, work in a pub and then buy a volkswagon van and tour the continent. This process even has a name - it's called the 'Big OE' (Overseas Experience). Per head of population Kiwis are the most travelled people in the world because they live so far away from anywhere that when they do leave to travel they tend to stay at it for a couple of years.

Re Travelling to London - I remember once (1987) when I was living in Maidstone in Kent I had reason to go to central London for work - a distance of about 34 miles IIRC. The traffic was so ridiculous it took me over 4 hours to get there! I've not been back since!

Re my friends LCD monitor - her son is my 'computer guy' who basically built our home network and is sourcing the cheap parts for me so I'm sure he'll know what to look for. He's one of those guys who is into building hi-spec machines and overclocking them.

I didn't see it at the cinema, bought it ex-rental VHS a few years ago, then got it on DVD after I got my 1st DVD ROM drive [writers weren't out then, & standalone players were still too pricey]. As for Battlefield Earth, I'll grudgingly admit to owning it, but it was only a £4 ex-rental. If I'd known where the story came from (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_Earth) I probably wouldn't have wasted my money.

Yeah, it is more the way it's used that bothers me. It just seems, to me, to make it a bit too easy to "create" characters, if you know what I mean.

Re Kiwis in London - there are so many there that it can be hard to find a pub that isn't staffed by them - it's virtually a cliche!

There's something else I didn't know. I'd heard something similar about Aussies, but that was only because of a running gag about Aussie barmaids in a sitcom called Time Gentlemen Please (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/articles/t/timegentlemenple_66603450.shtml).

I'm not much for overclocking, myself. For 1 thing I don't want to risk burning out 1 or more expensive components, & the other reason is that overclocking usually means more heat -> more cooling -> louder PC, & mine's loud enough as it is.

I'm a complete sci fi freak (so is my partner). You can't get into our house without navigating past the Borg Cubes and Federation starships! As a result I saw the Dredd movie at it's very 1st showing at my local theatre:D .

Re Battlefield Earth - I read the book long before the movie was made (and long before I'd heard of Scientology) - it read like great classic space opera to me, similar to EE Doc Smiths 'Lensman' stories - silly, illogical and a cracking good read!

Re Poser - yep - I agree totally about it being too easy. I always try to make as much of the content of my images as possible - that's what tS does:D . I use textures off the net but always change them for my own use. I sometimes download freebee models but then I build my own version (usually with a LOT less polys!) and almost never use other peoples modelling in my work. What I see with so much poser art is people composing other peoples artwork - it seems more like flower arranging or interior decorating to me!

Re Kiwis and Aussies in London. It's my experience that the majority of Brits can't tell the difference! It's a bit like lumping the British with the Germans because they're both European. There are some similarities in the accent but I soon lost count of the kangaroo jokes I got when I was in Blighty - I've never seen a live Kangaroo in my entire life!

I think the only thing I've ever seen on the 1st day it was out was Aliens. [funnily enough, that was quite some time before I got my nickname]

Couldn't have phrased it better myself.

Kangaroos? That's a bit unimaginitive of my fellow countrymen. No mention of Rolph, Dame Edna, or Bob Down? :) Apart from those 3, I think the only other Aussie cultral input we get is Neighbours and Home & Away. I can't think of any Kiwi [TV/film] exports. [unless you count every man & his dog using NZ for their sets]

Chuckle! If Aliens was the only 'first day' movie you've seen then you probably haven't got the Sci Fi bug quite as bad as I have. I can still remember queing for the original Star Wars movie and how long ago was that!?

Yep - Kangaroos and swimming pools - everyone in England seemed to think everyone in New Zealand has their own swimming pool - I wish!!

No that you mention it I do recall a smattering of Rolph Harris jokes too!

I'm not surprised though that you don't get a lot of Kiwi cultural stuff there. We have been generating a few good movies and not just the big budget fantasy stuff like LOTR and Narnia. Here's a few titles you might recognise even if you haven't seen the movies - 'Heavenly Creatures' (about a murder in the city I live in) and 'The Frighteners' (filmed just over the hill from here) are both earlier Peter Jackson movies. There is also 'Once Were Warriors', 'The Piano' and the very successful 'Whalerider' which also spring to mind.

I believe that there is also a locally made soap opera/medical show called 'Shortland Street' which is apparently also shown on British tele.

NZ is a small place population-wise. We have slightly more land area than Britain and only 4 million people in it (which is the population of an average city!) so it's probably not surprising that you don't hear a lot about the place.

Interesting comment about the land area.
I hadn't realized NZ was that large- it must be the distortions inherent in mapmaking - either that or being surrounded by all that ocean makes it look smaller on the map!
When you say 'Britain' are you including Scotland and Ireland?
Sorry to veer off on a tangent, but I'm a unrehabilitated armchair traveler with a thing for geography.

This from Wikipedia "The total land area of New Zealand, 268680 square kilometres (103738 mi²), is a

little less than that of Japan and a little more than the United Kingdom. ... We need somewhere to put all the damned sheep!!

Another interesting statistic- New Zealand actually has a longer coastline than the United States - it's all those crinkly bits around the edges!

Auckland is our biggest city and holds about a third of our total population. In terms of area per head of population Auckland is actually the largest city in the world!

No need to apologise for the tangent - I'm something of a geography nut myself. It comes from being born on one side of the planet (England) and growing up on the opposite side! In addition to that I'm rather proud of my adopted country - it's not necessarily any better than anywhere else on Earth but it suits me (except for the foriegn exchange rates!) and I love talking about it.

Chuckle! If Aliens was the only 'first day' movie you've seen then you probably haven't got the Sci Fi bug quite as bad as I have.

Or maybe it just means I'm not that comfortable around people, & don't go to the cinema very often. Off the top of my head, I saw Batman, Batman Begins, SW: Episode 3, & probably a few others... before they were even in the cinema over here. :p

While other kids were trying to wrap their heads around stuff about a boy & girl called "Janet & John", & a dog called Spot, I was reading stuff by Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, & Star Trek novels. Would you like me to list my DVD collection? :p :D

I can still remember queing for the original Star Wars movie and how long ago was that!?

Considering I only turned 3 that year, quite a while. :p

Out of that lot the only thing I've seen is The Frighteners. I'm not sure why, but for some reason I've never been in a terrible rush to see LOTR. I expect I'll wait until I can get the extended edition boxed set at a good enough price, then do a little editing [leaving out soundtracks I don't need] & copying so each film fits on 1 disc. Just because I have a 5-disc DVD changer, doesn't mean I'm not bothered about having to change discs in the middle of a film.

I believe that there is also a locally made soap opera/medical show called 'Shortland Street' which is apparently also shown on British tele.

Yeah, I think it was on ITV1. Didn't know it was a NZ show though. I think I tried to watch it once or twice, but it never caught my interest.

I wish we had a population that small. Sadly, due to what basically amounts to an "open-door" policy on immigration, as well as too many people that are unable to understand the concept of 2 kids being plenty & 3 too many, our population is about 15x that of NZ. :(

It's funny, but although I think I heard that NZ has more sheep than anywhere else, or at the very least sheep is 1 thing NZ is known for - NZ isn't usually 1 of the places used for the line: <place> - where men are men, & sheep are scared. Usually it's Wales, or sometimes Australia.

We clearly have more than just trueSpace and a shared motherland in common!

"Considering I only turned 3 that year, quite a while. I must have a few years headstart on you then.

Re LOTR: Read it when I was a kid and have reread it at least 11 times as well as everything else I could find written by Tolkein. I was rapt when I heard it was going to be filmed in NZ and deeply concerned that 'they' would get it 'wrong'. I'm pleased to say 'they' got it pretty good. I have the extended DVD's of all three films. I'm clearly biased but I find it hard to imagine anyone NOT liking these movies. They are worth seeing from a 3d perspective too as the animation (particularly with Gollum) is pretty impressive.

Re sheep! Trust me there are plenty of jokes about New Zealanders and sheep. The numbers are a little less now as more grapes are being grown but it wqasn't long that we had a population of 4 million people and 40 million sheep!

Hey if there is one place in the world I would love to see it would be NZ! After seeing the LODR trilogy and Eco Challenge showing amazing scenes of your homeland I was hooked. It looks like a great place to live.
Oh yea, keeping with the topic...Great job Wizard! Your renderings captured that mysterious storybook feel. I especially liked that waterfall and romanish supporting walls tucked in the rock. Small details add to the overall feel and you captured it really well.

Wool it sounds like the sheep farmers might have something to wine about. Let's hope it doesn't turn out to baa-d for them. :)

Alien, No Ray Bradbury too?

I looked up his list of works on Wikipedia & it looks like the only 1 I've read is Fahrenheit 451. I think most of the stuff I've seen [either in libraries or second hand book shops/stalls] has been his story collections, which I don't usually go in for [by anyone] I normally prefer longer stories [eg the whole book].

Hi Steinie - you would be made most welcome here in NZ specially with a handle like "Steinie". One of our more popular beers here is called 'Steinlager' and in accordance with the antipodean (ie NZ and Australia) habit od shortening names and adding 'ie' drinking this beer is known as having a "Steinie". I'm sure you'd fit right in!

Re it being a great place to live - well I'm biased of course so my opinion probably doesn't count but I don't have any urge to leave!

Thanks for your kind words about my pictures - it's nice to know that you think I captured that 'storybook' feel coz that's what I was gong for.

Ray Bradbury? That guy wrote some spooky stories - the stand out for me was "Dark they were and golden eyed".

Alien: "Wool it sounds like the sheep farmers might have something to wine about. Let's hope it doesn't turn out to baa-d for them".

Ouch! Thank you for shearing those witicisms - ewe are too kind. :D :D

I'm a bit like you in that I prefer to read a whole story rather than a collection of short stories but Bradbury is a true master of original and provocative original ideas and he is well worth making an exception for IMHO.
