Sadly it appears that PI has closed up shop, though they are also talking about continuing development and asking for testers.

--------------

July, 2006

Primitive Itch is saying goodbye.

Deep thanks to Caligari and the trueSpace community for the years of fun and support.

Motion Studio is not dead: we will continue to work on upgrades and compatibility.

We plan on making existing plugins available in some form, pending version-compatibility testing. Contact us if you are interested in helping with version testing.

General tech support will remain available via support@primitiveitch.com.

------------

Scott you rule(d) man.

You gave much new life for me and Truespace with the release of Motion Studio. As a hardcore user of MoStu and other apps you have created I can tell that you are a guy that really enjoy(ed) working on your plug-ins...and I reap the benefits.

You will be missed...but not forgotten.

They had the best plugins that I know of for trueSpace, full stop. Darn shame, really.

Yeah, I think I checked Primitive Itch's forums every couple of days for the past 3 or 4 years. Had some good email discussions with Scott, as well as a nice phone conversation. The guy is brilliant and wrote some very cool plugins. (Most know how I feel about Motion Studio ;) )

Thanks for the tools, Scott!

I'm kinda bummed out that so many plugin developers have left. Chikara (CK Game Factory) seems to have stopped production as well.

But in the end, the plugins still work with my copy of trueSpace 6.6 so I can't be too upset. :) ...and I do understand why tSx developers move on eventually.

OH NO! I really wanted Shader Lab. Now the next closest thing seems to be Dark Tree but it is $400 more!

Oh well,

Steve

slt614 I believe you can get darktree shaders on one of the plugin paks, either anipak or fxpak. Check out the plugins page:

http://caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Plugins/Caligari/ipak/default.asp?Cate=Caligari

look on the left and click on the cd icons to see what is on each.

Shaderlab is good, Dark tree can be found at www.darksim.com if you need that one look for the simbiont link, as well as other textures for free.

Note that Shaderlab let you construct your own shaders from scratch.

Darktree is free, so long as you just want to use the existing shaders. The version that lets you modify and create shaders from scratch though is quite expensive, and I think that is where the price comparison to Shaderlab comes in.

Note that the version on the Pak is also just the "use the shaders" rather than the "make the shaders" version.

I too am sad to see Primitive Itch go - now no-one can buy my shaders, since no-one can buy Shaderlab in order to use them :(

And more than just that personal impact of course, it is sad to see the "one stop shop" for so many plug-ins disappear, making it harder to find them all. And it is also the passing of an era when such a large and prominent name - both Scott as a person and developer, and Primitive Itch as a company and distributor - closes up shop :(

Why? Are you guys going to be removing it from rayPak, like you did with trueScape & the dePak? [I got mine before it was removed :D]

No, the Paks don't change, their contents are set in stone :)

However, the one on rayPak is an old version (SL 1.0 or 2.0, as opposed to the final 2.6 or whichever version it was), and many shaders were all reworked to take advantage of the new version, and the later shaders of mine required the new version to work. Without the Prim Itch site, no updates for SL.

Even that, that also means only those who buy the rayPak will get it, while I am sure there were people who just bought ShaderLab on its own.

So the loss of Primitive Itch is an unfortunate loss for developers and similar who had plug-ins etc hosted on there.

HTH!

Sad to see this and I would also like to thank Scott for all his plugins etc over the years...always rock solid and useful. I used to check PI 5 times a day just praying there would be some small update.

I bet he'd be happy to hear that so many people are sad to see Primitive Itch go. That says a lot for his plugins on his own.

From plugin compatibility page (http://www.caligari.com/store/Plugins/compatibility.asp):trueScape 2.0

Discontinued and removed from dePak in July 2005

However, the one on rayPak is an old version (SL 1.0 or 2.0, as opposed to the final 2.6 or whichever version it was), and many shaders were all reworked to take advantage of the new version, and the later shaders of mine required the new version to work. Without the Prim Itch site, no updates for SL.

Apparently I have SL2.2, & from looking at a cached version of the updates page [via Google] it looks like 2.4 was the latest version. From your own readme files, it sounds like the compatibility switching point was between 1.0 & 2.0.

I know Caligari hosts the updates for 1 or 2 other plugins, any chance you guys could work something out with Scott so as to provide a similar service for updates to PI plugins?

Even that, that also means only those who buy the rayPak will get it, while I am sure there were people who just bought ShaderLab on its own.

I expect so, again - perhaps you guys could work something out with Scott? I always wondered why Caligari didn't act as a selling agent [not sure if that's the right term] for 3rd party plugins.

Thanks for the kind words everybody.

I regret that I dropped the bomb without much warning (esp. for you Tom). Just keeping the store open was expensive, and I finally had to pull the plug.

Here is a little present: a link to the full version of ShaderLab Pro 2.4 (http://www.pixelfu.com/special/ShaderLabPro.2.4.Setup.exe).

I hope you can get some use out of it.

Scott,

Thank you for your kind gift (I'd fallen behind, with version 2.2)! ShaderLab really is great, and I know the guys here will greatly appreciate it!

And thank you so much for your wonderful support of your customers. Will miss Primitive Itch very much. Hope you will get to stay in touch. (Glad to see you listed as on the Caligari beta team; keep them on the right path.)

Thanks again, and very best wishes,

rj

Is it just the money issue? If so, there are alternatives. For example, in the short term, any freeware or updates that are yours eg the SL2.4 update I can host for you. Infact, say the word & I'll upload the update & post the link to save your bandwidth.

Thanks! Just grabbed it, let me know if you want me to host it [doesn't cost me anything, free ISP webspace], it'll only take 2mins to upload [literally]. I've got about 40MB spare at the moment.

As for longer term & a store, I know of a hosting service that's free, no banners, & allows commercial use. Doesn't allow hotlinking though, but I don't think that would be a problem in your situation, would it? Also, you can use PHP & MySQL.

Yes, running stores is expensive, and time consuming too. I can understand why you wanted to drop out of it Scott - it is the same reason Caligari doesn't (currently) run a third party store.

There's a lot of work in maintaining the server, in updating information on the pages, in working out and sending out the payments to the people on your store, and so on. It is certainly not trivial, and not a matter of just a few minutes work then it maintains itself.

I for one am very grateful that Scott has run the store for as long as he has! I know that the whole concept of being involved in selling shaders would never have happend without his plugin, AND the ability to sell them would never have happened without his store, AND it would have been very hard to reach customers without that store. In mentioning my sorrow at seeing it go, not so much a "complaint" for myself, as a lamentation for the community as a whole, and I just wanted to use my case to illustrate the extent of just what Scott enabled :)

Even before this news, this is something we have been aware of, the concept of being able to reach tS users with products designed for tS. I can't say more than that at the minute, but it is something that is on the table (and has been on the table for a while) as "needing a solution".

Anyway, I would like to extend my thanks to Scott for all he has done :) And to wish him all the best for all his future endeavours too, in all areas of life!

Oh and of course Shaderlab 2.4 - wow, that is a great gift for all! ShaderLab allowed me to do a great many things in my renders that I could never have done without it, being more of a rendering guy than an animator, Shaderlab remains my favorite plugin of all time :)

Also a big THANKS for this gift from me :)

Is there some news about the future state of all those plugins? I know lots of people that works with previous versions of TS. From TS 3 up to TS 6.6. And your page was the biggest gold mine around. It would be a shame when they would completely disappear. This much useful stuff.

Any chance to make them available again in one or another way? Can we assist/help you in any way to make them available again?

Thanks for the gift, Scott, I am also only at 2.2 so this is nice to get!...I see that "MotionStudio is not dead", but is it still available for purchase, or are you just supporting existing users??

Looks like the demo is still available for download.

Maybe if someone were interested in purchasing it, they could email Scott.

Again, thanks Scott. I have been scratching my head on how to get the most recent version of shader lab, having got the early version of Pro.

I am also glad to see you are a beta tester...this bodes well for the animation in 7.5.

I am also grateful that you provided the first user friendly way of buying CK japanese plug ins...

Best wishes for the future
