Autoscroll Stopped Working (Community)
Autoscroll Stopped Working // Communitykalliopy@*nospam*my.activeworlds.com (kalliopy)Jun 1, 2000, 2:30am
I have come across a quite unusual problem I have not seen before, and as
of yet have not been able to find a solution. Today, I noticed that the autoscroll feature of my AW browser no longer works (I am using version 2.2, NOT the beta version). In fact, I have several AW style browsers (ie. OuterWorlds, GalaxyWorlds, etc.) in addition to AW, and they ALL seem to have this problem. The last time I used AW was last Friday night, and everything worked fine. I have installed some new software since Friday, so I thought that possibly one of the programs was having a conflict with the AW software, causing the autoscroll to stop operating properly. I tried several measures to remedy the problem, with no luck. Here's what I've tried so far: 1. Reinstalling AW (a newly downloaded copy) 2. Ending task on anything new running in the background, that had not routinely run in the background before last week. 3. Uninstalling each program that I had installed on my computer since last Friday, one at a time (testing out the AW browser between each program uninstallation, after a reboot). (I have since reinstalled all of the programs I uninstalled, except for two). 5. Running Norton Utilities' version of Scandisk and Defrag, as well as a Norton Program called Windoctor. The programs I'd installed since last Friday were as follows: 1. Omnipage 9 Pro (and OCR program by Caere) 2. Caere PageKeeper 3. Microsoft Home Publishing Suite 4. Microsoft Picture It! 2000 As I stated before, I uninstalled ALL of the above, and tested out the AW software between each attempt (after a reboot), but saw absolutely no improvement. I went ahead and reinstalled #1 and #4 since then. Before this problem, the AW browser had functioned fine in the past. Also, my autoscroll feature seems to work fine in other chat programs such as mIRC, and only the AW browsers seem to be affected. I also run Norton Antivirus (updated just yesterday), and have no known viruses on my system. What I'm trying to find out if there's a known conflict between the AW software and any of the programs above. Or, is there a conflict between AW and some file that might cause the autoscroll feature to stop functioning? I am concerned not only because the problem is annoying, but also because I am an AW volunteer, and it will be next to impossible to do my job if I have to keep clicking on the scrollbar and manually scroll after each entry is made by others in the text window. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! **I have also sent this letter to AW Tech Support** Kalliopy -- I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. It is known that running ActiveWorlds 2.2. under WIndows 2000 causes the autoscroll to be broken.
Now that you say you installed some software i wonder if some updated System Component comming with a Microsoft Product is causing this behavior on your machine. I suppose its the Richedit Control, which resides in riched20.dll and riched32.dll. So you might want to try to locate them on your win98 or win95 cd inside some cab - file (for win95 you would need the cab file viewer for that, win98 has it build in AFAIK), and try to replace both files in your windows/system directory with the ones from the cab files. Hope it helps :) Faber [View Quote] percipientJun 1, 2000, 4:33pm
A friend of mine had this same problem a short time ago. She was not
running 3.0b. Just on a hunch, I suggested she drag the chat scrollbar all the way to the bottom--like it is suposed to work in the beta. She says that it worked right after that--or at least for the rest of that night. I don't know if this will do you any good, but if it worked for one person, it might work for another. I hope your day goes well, Percipient kalliopy@*nospam*my.activeworlds.com (kalliopy)Jun 1, 2000, 7:37pm
Thanks everyone for your help :)
I received a reply from Bill in AW support today with an attached replacement file (riched32.dll), and the problem was indeed with that file. Seems this problem occurs from the install/update of some Microsoft products. After applying the fix per Bill's instructions, everything works normally again. Thanks again!!!
