No, it isn't just you. Here is what Calpantera (Bill) said about it:

"Also I wanted to apologize for the renumbering of the news server
articles. You may have noticed all posts now show as unread. While
trying to clean up some of the other newsgroups that are filled with
idiotic ramblings, petty arguments and flame wars (Come on people its
only VR!!) I had to do a rebuild_piles and unfortunately in the build of
Dnews we are running there is a bug that causes the articles to be
renumbered."

The server reindexed all the groups after they deleted stuff. That means it
chucked all the original message ids in the bin and assigned a new one to
all messages that were kept. Very annoying, it would've been nicer to have
it done like before, that didn't make all the headers bounce (downloading
20k headers in community whilst the server doesn't seem able to maintain
the connection with that much traffic isn't very funny).

My newsreader did not make me redownload anything; however, hundreds of old threads got marked as unread
