Now I know I haven't made the best of contributions to this community in the
past, but let me take this opportunity to give you an well experienced
illustration as to the origins of that file Dark Mod has been flaunting
about and the legal implications its creates (of which are few).

I take neither side. Insanity is a man who has put a lot of hard work into
his object path. He takes great pride in his service and would be none to
pleased when it is all placed up for grabs so effortlessly. Dark Mod is a
guy I once considered a friend who more recently has become a reckless
fool. He has spent the last few months trying to gain some kind of respect
as a hacker, when infact his actions taking the credit for the distribution
of this file will only land him in trouble with AWCorp.

First, the history of that file. The file would have been created using
software with which Mod was not authorised to use, most probably it was
investigative work created by the AWST, which has been known for its
problems but has done a lot of good for this community. If not for the AWST,
people would still be running around with their little cracked browsers and
AWHacks. It is true that the program Mod used was most probably a browser
that has the ability to decrypt a world password. But this software is now
unusable and I doubt he even had it in the first place, most probably
someone else compiled that list of worlds and passwords, although I would
like to stress now that I severely doubt an AWST member would have done.

Looking at this situation legally, I severely doubt Insanity has involved
the FBI, if he has nothing much will come of it. I would be lying if I were
to say I haven't had encounters with the police of matters involving the
internet and one which related quite closely to this situation. And people
have looked at fines of no more than $100 for much more serious crimes. When
such a case reaches the courts, the damages Insanity would claim would be
quickly whittled down to speed up proceedings and end up costing him more
than he gains. As for charges, Mod himself hasn't committed a crime as such.
Especially since I doubt the police will find evidence of him collecting
those passwords. As has already been mentioned, him providing that text file
is like warez.com providing links to other warez sites; its the actually
downloading and usage of the files that *could* be developed into a criminal
charge. The distribution of that file would carry a miniscule charge.

I don't doubt that information that Insanity has on is correct, but by
posting it he IS committee a criminal offence, especially if it is correct.
Again this charge would not carry a substantial sanction, but it would
certainly not help Insanity's damages claim against Mod because he could
potentially be causing damages to Mod, as ones IP address and real name can
be used to track down phone numbers, dental and medical records and numerous
other private documents on the internet. Mod could easily argue in court
that he only caused damages to Insanity on a commercial level whereas he has
caused damages on a personal level to him and other family members.

It seems to me that both sides are at fault in different ways and that all
world owners should change their OP Passwords if included on that file and
get on with life. It seems a lot of people have become involved with this
situation who know little or nothing about making themselves looking stupid
with the things they have posted and creating a lot of misconception among
onlookers.

I hope this clears this whole thing up, if anyone has any questions about
what I've said I'll do my best to answer them. My suggestions to Insanity is
to cut his losses and re-password his OP and redistribute the password to
all his customers, I doubt that many have even downloaded anything using the
passwords in that file. My suggestion to Mod is to either completely change
his attitude and become the productive sociable person he used to be or
leave active worlds. At current his sole intentions seem to be to cause
controversy and make impressions, he doesn't realise nor care what this
community has to offer nor the hours of work people have put into Active
Worlds that he intends to make in vain.

"you see it doesn't make sense lol awst isn't making aw any more secure
theyre making it less secure bygiving morons power they shouldnt have" "and

beats me, I think you should respect ppl's wishes of not having their OPs
available to the public. There are plenty of good public OPs too (I'd say
mine hehe, but because the server is unreliable I won't, but anyone
interested can always use it, http://kahnews.cjb.net/multipath.php? or
alternatively http://home.no.net/awphp/multipath.php? (more reliable server,
sometimes a bit faster, but often erroneous and it hasn't been updated since
this autumn)... that was for today's shameless plug ;-)) ), no need to crack
the passwords to the private ones.
