Thought I would pass this along in case someone didn't know about it.

FRAPS is a video capture program that can capture whatever is on screen and record it to an AVI file. It is commonly used by gamers and game designers to test their FPS.

Also used by gamers to show their capability in a game. heh

But, since it captures screen in video, it has as many uses as you can imagine. One warning, the AVI files are huge because it doesn't have time to compress them on the fly.

For instance, the free Google Sketchup has a tourguide program. You can fly around and inside buildings terrain, etc. The attached video demonstates how FRAPS can capture the tourguide slide show in Google Sketchup.

Another use I thought FRAPS might have is for tS7 users in their shared space projects. It can let you know your FPS which you can determine either the condition of your hardware or your online connection or both.

There is a demo version of FRAPS. I believe it has a few restrictions, including putting the logo on the screen of the AVI file. However, it can be used for FPS measurement or general use of showing what is on screen if it is hard to explain in words. Probably better to spend the thirty seven dollars and buy the program as it very useful.

The use of the free Google Sketchup has many possibility such as scene planning. You can also import 3DS files, so you can get an idea of what your project may look like or actually do some directing of how you want to conduct your own movie.

Anyway, here's the non-edited-I didn't take anytime setting this up video.

BTW, Windows Move Maker reduced the 100mb AVI to just over 1 mb.

Unfortunately I don't think FRAPS works with TS7. I had also come across that program a couple of months ago and thought it might be good for capturing the realtime player view as there wasn't a way to do that at that point. I wasn't able to get it to work with TS7 at all though. I even emailed their tech support and couldn't get it worked out.

Thankfully the ability to render the realtime player view was added to 7.1. :)

Interesting Dele. It records in tS6.6 just fine. It won't record the icons, just the screen.

The issue with program interfaces is that they act similar to video overlay mechanisms in digital cameras. What you see with your eyes are the icons, the interface and the view screen.

When a video is taken by FRAPS, the program's interface acts like an overlay and FRAPS doesn't recognize it as part of the viewing screen. FRAPS only takes a video of the viewing screen as this is outputting to Windows via your video card. The program interface for tS7 (or any program) isn't part of that process.

You should be able to take videos of tS7.1 viewing screen however..Unless the player/LE or whatever it is called is not actually a view screen, but an overlay like the program interface then I can see why it doesn't show up in the video.

There are programs that screen capture slide shows or video like Wink (DeBugMode,) a freeware program. It is primarily used by people to explain a process of a software program (or making tutorials) or other things which uses the Window operating system.

Some things dont work, depending on hardware acceleration - for instance, some movies in WIndows Media Player you can capture, others you can't (can't evne screen grab, you just get an empty hole). I imagine similar issues would affect the real-time Player.

However, you can renderg animations directly to file now in 7.1 (or still images, doesnt have to be animations), which negates the need for screen capturing outside of the Player itself.

Also, if you want to show a recording of zooming around a building... well that's what tP is for, just make a 3D recording and share that :) No need for old fashioned 2D then!

I do know things like FRAPS get used by the machinima community, to make stories from their online multiplayer games (and for simpler uses of course like showing a big boss being taken down and so on), so it's good to know about these things as they have a lot of potential creative use! Thanks for sharing :)
