I never really knew how much the Amiga influenced trueSpace until I read Roman's article on how tS got started.

It reminds me my last active duty assignment in the military. I was stationed in Germany in Wiesbaden in the late 1980s. We had developed a Commodore Computer Club (CCC) where we met in a large school cafeteria.

There were military and dependents as well as local Germans and a few immigrant folks from other European countries.

I mainly sat in the front part with the C-64, Vic20's and C-128 users. The Amiga guys met in the back secretly discussing the marvel of their graphics system and capabilities. :)

It was all great fun, games swapped, EPROM's utilitized :) and a general thirst for computer knowlege was satisfied in that German City.

Little did I know that the guys in the back room using the Amiga's were part of a ground swell of graphic applications. But, here I am again full circle and I have walked into the back room where Amiga users are and have found out why they were marveling over graphic capabilities of the Amiga.

That is Roman's trueSpace which spawned from the Amiga. Life is curious don't you think. :)

The 3D program for the Amiga was called "Caligari". I could be wrong but I recall the software being very expensive but way ahead of it's time.
I had the Amiga 1000 from day 1 and for the first year there was no multitask programs for it!
Another ironic fore-shadowing product for it was called the "Bridge". A PC on a board plugged into the Amiga and you could jump between the Amiga and PC, running IBM software in a window on the Amiga.
I still have fond memories of that Computer!

I would have to agree jamesmc, life is very curious, and seems to move in large and small
circles.

In the mid 80’s I owned an Amiga 1000 which was my first ‘real’ computer. At that time
I didn’t purchase trueSpace or Caligari Broadcast as it was called. But when
I finally ‘jumped ship’ for the PC world I purchased tS 1.0 as soon as it was released.

The Amiga community was a fantastic resource, anyone remember the Fred Fish library?

Here’s a couple of scans from a review in the Jan. 1989 Amazing Computing magazine. The price was about $2000 US which was alot but
competitve products sold for much more at the time.

Thanks for the scan James !

It reminds me a lot of souvenirs... I sold my Amiga 1200 in 1994 but I still have an Amiga 600 with Genlock chip and 3 Mo of RAM / 30 Mo HD. I use it linked with a CMX07 to add video effects in live events and exhibitions. I can carry both in a small bag.

In one way, we can say that Amiga is not dead as it is still in use nowdays. The new HDTV standars may make it obsolete though...

If you want to learn more about the CMX07, I made a full review of it at http://emmanuel.asset.free.fr/hardware/CMX07.htm

And Amiga600 has its own site : http://www.amiga600.de/

Very found memories indeed! I used Caligari24 which was less then $300 on a modified Amiga500 (always tickering I am). Then to an Amiga1200 which was very fun. Multitasking multiple graphics programs with 512KB was even possible! Amazing. I think of all the great graphics programs that was spawn from that era, TrueSpace, LightWave, Hash Animation Master and a hoist of others makes one wonder why that platform ever died :(.

Ah Yes the Video Toaster, the early days of LightWave an amazing hardware/software video editing suite! There was actually a crack to bypass the hardware so everyone could use the software. The company finally realized their main market was LightWave by itself. And today we enjoy the M&M commercials!
I can't forget gone but not forgotten "Imagine" which I started 3D with. This program took me from the 2d realm to the 3d realm. It showed me a differant way and Truespace showed me a better way.
I sure hope they kept their pioneering spirit alive....

My beloved Amiga 500 introduced me to 3D back in the day with Real 3D 1.3.
Along with the landscape program Vista Pro 1. I remember waiting a week to render a 320x240 image of a raytraced globe....and being so excited I couldn't stand it. :)

I still have a an A1200 in a tower case, but I haven't fired it up in ages. I think I'm going to just for fun :)
