Just to see if we can glean a little info about what is (or should be) driving development in our favrit app.

If you could keep it to the top 4 you are doing or the top 4 you want to do.

Well, currently -I mean this month-, I have been using tS for architecture designs, broadcast video effects and webdesign!

Archecture requires precision but thanks to several plugins, I am almost as good as if I was using ArchiCAD or and a CAD presentation program.

Video effect does not need precision but a good KFE, paths tools, and a powerfull material editor to make creative video layers mix.

This is why I will always prefer tS to a very dedicated tool like Hexagon 2. It is maybe less powerfull or productive in some cases but its polyvalency well balance its lacks.

Wow Emmanuel, looks like you are all over the place. Yes, a program like tS should be your main app while apps like Hex 2 should support it.

Man, I use trueSpace for a lot of stuff!

I recently used it for making a 3D representation of a product that the company I work for is making. I used the 3D rendering for the ads, press releases, brochures, business cards, and a demo video.

My personal thoughts on TS is that it simply rocks! I've used TS since version 2 for all my personal and professional projects

I find that TS is a great program for doing advanced things.

I use it for illustrating certain things in subjects at school. Models to show representations for certain things at home and anybody else who asks for something doing. View over an area and recently completed a simple fly through a house for building approval (or sumin like dat):jumpy:

May not seem like an awful lot but when I am only 15 and still at school there isn't many hours in the day to spare:jumpy:

I was introduced to TS 4 years ago which Was TS3, Last year I won the Demo contest. (yes I know the image looks terrible and I have improved dramatically since then) and then went on to buy my upgrade to TS7 as I find the program great and easy to use.

I could be way off on this and it's way too soon to tell but I would think Modeling vs Animation usuage would be 3 to 1 for Truespace. Of course I do not have the numbers Calagari has. I base it on contest, polls, responses and level of knowledge needed.

Of course a question of INTEREST would be differant than a question on USUAGE.

I also cannot picture TS being used in CAD, where are the tools for that? Whoever filled out that one please inform us.

Product Illustration it's very good at. Certain types of characters development I enjoy using it for. It also makes Avatars!!!

And number one for me and not on the questionare.....it's FUN.

Looks like a couple of folks selected "Film Output".

I would never have guessed a trueSpace-rendered frame was output to film (when I say film, I mean motion picture film....35mm....24fps...)

Interesting. I'd like to hear more if anyone wants to share their experiences with this.

Hi Naes

What an excellent question. And given your current agonizing over the merits of tS7 for you I'm thinking you would benefit from asking yourself this question.

I only ticked two options in your poll as all I do is artistic images and a bit of character modelling to add to that. I have little interest in animation beyond using animation tools for posing my characters (which tS does fine and has done since at least tS 5.1). Given my focused interests and uses for tS I have to say that there appears to be a lot of features to tS7 that simply have no (current) use for me. I find the HDRI features appealing and faster rendering sounds good but really that's it for me.

This means that tS 6.6 is still easily capable of producing everything I want. We are all conditioned to think in terms of 'which one is the best'. The reality as I see it is that there is no such thing as the best, there are only individual opinions, each shaped by individual goals, preferences and ideals.

For me tS 6.6 is the best all round 3d application - the key words being for me. Why? It's cheap, it's been designed with some thought to both human nature and ergonomics, it's capable of producing stunning art, it will run on my existing computer setup and most important of all - I have a licensed copy of it on my hard drive! I figure that I can easily continue to produce artwork of a quality that satisfies my own stringent requirements for as long as my hardware holds out. I personally do not need tS7 to get my needs met.

Sure there are other apps that have features that tS x.x does not have ( a sentance that is equally true when reversed). So what? My car does not have central locking (it does have electric mirrors though). The key here is I know what I want my car (and my 3d software of choice) to do and it does it most satisfactorilly (sp?).

I read your posts Naes, and I wonder what it is you really want. An app that will easily perform any task you want, whilst being competitively priced and better than all it's competition? There is no such thing. You can get close though and tS x.x is a good option.

I would recommend that you aim to be as clear as possible on what you want to produce. What is your end goal? Which way did you yourself respond to this poll?

Once armed with that knowledge you can then assertain wether tS x.x can allow you to meet your aims or not.

I suggest that it does not matter wether Michaelangelo used Chisel 2.0 or Chisel 3.5 to create the statue of David - the most important thing is was Michaelangelo (and his clients) happy with the statue and did he enjoy creating it? Did the final creation fit his needs and did his tools allow him to fulfill those needs.

A while back I was torn between getting tS 5 or Carrera studio 4. Ts had a highly customiseable interface and I was already familliar with many of it's conventions from tS3.2 which made it easier to use. Carrera on the other hand came with lots of library resources which made it easier to use.

I decided on tS because I could see, from looking at what other folk were producing with it, that due to the intuitive interface I could easily create anything that was in Carreras content libraries (and the people on tS forums just seemed to be friendlier!) and the thought of "doing it myself" - making my own content - had more appeal to me than simply clicking on an existing model in a library.

You will almost certainly have different requirements to me - I recommend that you figure out your requirements in reasonable detail and work backwards to the question of tS suitability for your needs.

How did you answer your own poll by the way?:)

Hey W!zard,

I ticked Character Modelling, Character Animation, Content Creation and Artistic Illustration.

I tried answering the question what it is that I want in several different ways, but the answer I don't think belongs in this thread.

The purpose of the thread is in one way to take advantage of the polling system. One thread and you see what people are doing or want to do. Info for Caligari and the users. In another way it is to spark a conversation that will generate some ideas. To see what people are doing or would like to do.

Besides, I was hoping to see some candor in the responses, which unfortunately can be somewhat lacking on a board hosted by the manfacturer. Not that I want criticism, but just a frank answer to the question. We have 305 users registered, it would be nice if they all voted because nothing but good could come from the results.

Well Mate I reckon it's an inspired question. I shall be watching the results with great interest - and who knows, maybe it will help you with your decision.

That would be me then. In my teaching environment we use TS to produce .stl models for CAM output. We use the object info panel when drawing these objects to get precise sizes as well as the dimension tool. While not the same as parametric CAD it sill is Computer Aided Design in both the virtual and real sense.

That would be me as well. I've used tS for the last 10 years to produce
Display Designs. trueSpace is accurate to 2 decimal places, so if I work in
Inches or mm/cm it's more than enough.

CAD stands for Computer Aided Design, so that can include many applications.

I voted pretty much the way the majority did... Modeling, artistic eter.

I had wrote a lengthy response, but got timed out and got logged out. heh

Lucky people don't have to read my blitherings. :)

Next time I'll use notepad and cut and paste. heh heh

I've used TS3 to 6.6 for architectural design and visualization/presentation. In addition, TS has given me a means to express my "artistic side", and I use the term loosely.

The CAD category is a broad one for a poll of this nature(IMO). My interpritation of CAD incudes anything from Leggo blocks to stealth aircraft, with architecture falling somewhere in between.

Emmanuel, which plugins are you speaking of and how do you apply them to architectural design?

I use it strictly for game content; but I do have plans of making a few renders of my own. I have a colored pencil piece that I did a long time ago that I would like to bring to fruition one of these days; it's a bit of abstract art. I'd also like to do a bit of Fantasy work as well; lots of ideas there. But I gotta put food on the table first:)

Me too!
I have used trueSpace for CAD work for nearly 4 years, it's a good enough tool for me.

Please elaborate on "where are the tools for that" Steinie.

I didn't see one category which would be more in line with how I like to use TS. Inventions/Inventing, Concept design, Cad maybe the right one there. Although now I think animation has really got my interest :). Anyways here is one of my inventions which is in use, not too telling in image for what use though ;).

I am actually glad that Truespace is being used as a CAD program. From my own experience in Mechanical Engineering I would need 3 digit tolerances. Where are the angle tools located. Can material list be outputed?

I pictured TS for Illustration, Preview Prototype and Mockup but not CAD. Great examples from you guys by the way.

Hey I'm still learning this thing!

Steine..here is the truespace image and the shop floor photo of something I did....

you can work to 0.001 tolerance..no material list..

with conversion pak 2 you can export to .dwg with dimensions intact..but this was done in ts5 before the pak. so dimension where input onto the autocad plans by hand.....

On response to the lack of breadth of the options, I kind of did it on purpose so those who might choose 'other' might chime in with what other meant to them.
