I got tS7 in the post here in Australia only about a week ago and I'm finding it difficult to comprehend! The model space I get - its essentially what we are use to but the player space is a whole new ball game - a real paradigm shift it seems to me. I'm scratching my head wondering what it all means.

Are there some beta testers/pro-teamers out there who have been using tS7 for a while that can simply summerise what they see this new direction is all about?- 'cause at the risk of sounding stupid, I'm just not sure I get it. (Although it LOOKS exciting and interesting!)

Burnart to give you an explanation right from the Caligari TS 7 manual "The trueSpace 3D Player view supports full Microsoft DirectX9 functionality for the real-time display of transparency, normal maps, shading, pixel and vertex shaders, and other effects. Complex lighting models, such as real-time shadows, and post-processing effects such as glow and bloom, allow you to

pre-visualize your scene with complex materials, lighting, etc., before you render a final image."

The Player view allows TS7 to take "full advantage" of features built into your graphics card that was not possible before. And the key phrase is "real time display" of many effects that you had to render out to see in past versions of TS. Basically Caligari's future investment will be in the Player view with the model view going away. Player view has certain tools like the "new" SDS tool that are not available in the model view. We can expect the important modelling tools to be in the Player view over time.

At the moment, using the Player to previsualize is somewhat unintuitive because you can't render from the Player (I mean really render). You have to switch back to Modeler to do that, which will also cause your viewpoint to jump.

In general, I'm also still struggling with the Player. Realtime "near-photorealism" doesn't grab me, so things like the DX shaders and many of the script objects aren't so interesting to me at the moment. The modeling functionality available in Player is eclectic. You can't get far without having to switch back to Modeler. In the current release, I feel the Player is a "technology preview". Perhaps this will change in 7.1 ;-)

what it all means.

What it all means, is that there is a plan to get the people connected.

Drums, Telegraph, Phone, Internet, implants, vr. I read it as babylon trying to reassemble her people again.

It is moving from personal 3d authoring to collective world making where anything goes, do as thou wilt.

I am of a different opinion and faith, do as He wilt, and am glad to keep my 3d authoring personal instead of working on a collaborative project (whose vision and goal is it anyway?)

Glad there is still a choice!

Kind regards

S'funny-I see it as an option to join others. A chance to meet like minded individuals in a controlled, safe and supervised space all with a common vision and goal. Safe in the knowledge that you are all there to willingly take part in a human experince no matter that it may be virtual.

A bit like going to church as opposed to praying on your own.

Again, choice is good though....

The plan is to enable each TS7 user to host their own shared space eventually. In that case-it is your vision and goal, shared for the benefit of your clients, prospective employer's, collaborators or friends.....:D

Yes I did think of writing about that however I was applying this to the babylonian system, not to the ecclesia. I recommend people to get connected with, and be a coworker in, the body of Christ (the church).

Which is my choice.

And as such, tS7 can (and will) be used to spread the Gospel, which was my intentions of getting the tS package in the first place...

Kind regards

e-graffiti summed it up pretty good there. Everything will eventually migrate over to the new architecture of the player. I would add that aside from the player looking good, it has muscle. Even with realtime 4X Anti Aliasing set, I've been able to work with many more polygons.

I think it's certainly worth exploring. I believe as more things get made, more people will start to like it.

- I think the ability to make 3d recordings will greatly help learning.

- Macros that expedite common tasks can be quickly and easily recorded. The code in these macros can be expanded/copied into scripts or analyzed to learn how to script certain things.

- I really think people should check out the scripting stuff (at least how to hook them up in the Link Editor and use them), even if you don't plan on writing scripts. These are kind of like plug-ins and there will be a lot of them before long. This is huge in my opinion. Pretty much anything that you can imagine can be done with scripts. I think a great deal of animation and modeling will be done using procedurals in the not too distant future. Reason being, it is much faster and much more versatile. You can simply plug a pre-made animation into any object. Swap out animated objects with different objects very quickly. Procedural modeling will allow terrain builders, tree makers, etc. All kinds of common things can be set up to be made very quickly.

- As for the interactive part, it's completely optional. You don't have to collaborate if you enjoy working alone. I probably won't do a whole lot of that myself. BUT, the option is there. One thing that I think will be really cool about interaction, is the ability to show live presentations to people (clients) and make real time changes at they're request. Also, being able to jump into a shared space and get help with something could be very handy. There certainly are possibilities here.

Like I mentioned, as more things get made, the power and abilities of the player will become more evident. Personally, I can't wait for everything to move over to the player. That's where the fun is. :D

Funny, yet ironic, the way that many of these posts mirror the ones on the beta forum when TS7 was in its earlier stages. Defiance aginst use of the player-no idea what shared space would be good for. Confusing layouts, what is that LE thing for?...I will never use it etc.....

All that has changed now and while no group of people will ever agree on everything, there is no doubt as to the potential of some of these features.

I expect that, in a few years once users have had the chance to stretch TS to its limit there will be a lot less confusion and maybe, just maybe, some of these concepts will become the standards for 3D authoring in an online-high speed information powered future....;)

Thanks for the replies - I have found your opinions useful and enlightening. I'm not anti scripting I use to write scripts in AREXX for Opal Paint on the Amiga and I have done some scripting in Flash and html of course. (Actual script writing in basic text editors!!) Not sure when or how I'm going to make the time to learn another scripting language and process - I'll wait until others who are better at it produce a few so I can look at their scripts.

By the sounds of it to really use the player in a shared space is going to b a way of for many of us - I still only have a dial up. Looking forward to the release of the free player module though - this (I think) will allow the export of an interactive environment/objects that could be played back on any DX9 compatible system. 3D powerpoint!
